Community Tasting Notes (average 91.6 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 63 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Charlie C on 5/16/2023 & rated 95 points: My last bottle was almost 3 years ago. I felt it might improve for another 2 years. That seems to be the case. Dark red, scant fading. Blueberry on the pretty nose. Rich and precise on the palate, blackberry, blueberry, anise, bacon fat notes. Mid-palate is brighter and more red-fruited. Beautifully resolved tannins. Perfectly balanced acidity. Finishes long and gradual with dark fruits. In a beautiful place right now. Drink next 5 years. Patience is rewarded with the Lagier Meredith Syrahs. (333 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 7/9/2022: Most of these have aged gracefully, but tonight’s was very tired. (1225 views)
Tasted by Charlie C on 9/29/2020 & rated 93 points: Deep purple color with the slightest fading at the edges. Aromas of roasted meats and plums on the nose. The palate shows ripe red fruits, rare roast beef, anise, blueberries. The tannins are still firm, but soften with air. Perhaps a year or two more could help. Nice acidity. The wine quickly brightens with air and comes into a beautiful balance. Long finish with notes of anise and blueberries. Lovely, but perhaps could still improve for another 2 years. (732 views)
Tasted by Charlie C on 1/24/2020 flawed bottle: Crumbling cork, clearly flawed, musty and ammonia aromas. Too bad. (813 views)
Tasted by Frank Murray III on 10/10/2019: Some wines poured blind (Maison Cafe in Dana Point, CA): Poured blind next to the 2003, and in my view, the 2001 really clobbered the 2003. The balance and youth of the 2001, which is pushing close to 2 decades old now, was pretty amazing. Perfume, tar and dark raspberry. Finishes youthful, showing the cool structure and balance of a wine that I suspect will age another 5, maybe even 10 years. Should have bought more of these in 2017 when I found it on Winebid.  Tasted by Hamersly on 9/24/2019 & rated 94 points: Smooth, rich and delicious without heaviness or heat. Amazingly fresh and clean. Pleasantly spicy with refined tannins. (662 views)
Tasted by veniceslug1 on 8/18/2019 & rated 93 points: Amazing. Still young. Beautiful pepper, nice tannin. Still young and fresh. (603 views)
Tasted by Rieslingfan on 11/24/2018: Wow, this is incredible. It still shows some youthful berry fruit, but it has developed tar, rose, leather and earth components as well, so it’s very complex. The palate has clearly evolved, as the tannins have softened, but there remains a structural framework that balances the depth of fruit and savory elements. I find it hard to believe that this is seventeen years old. It certainly seems poised for making old bones, as the balance and fruit levels are set for a long journey. Fantastic Syrah! (990 views)
Tasted by alanr on 10/13/2018 & rated 92 points: Dark, opaque garnet, barely any noticeable color evolution; this is the lone vintage where Steve and Carole think there was a tiny bit of brett in their wine, but I can detect none in this bottle, only rich, dark red fruit, lush and vibrant, with oodles of mouthwatering acidity, some little hints of dried herbs, excellent fine/smooth tannins. A very clean style, barely showing its age. Pure and delicious California Syrah. (1028 views)
Tasted by jhemming on 3/11/2018 & rated 93 points: Really great. Not showing her age at all. Plenty of dark fruit and smoke / game up front. Integrated tannins and nice acidity. Plus finish with sweet red fruit. Over several hours the smoke dissipated off but the fruit remained (651 views)
Tasted by David_T on 9/26/2016 & rated 92 points: Absolutely stunning nose, 96+ if the aromas get points. Integrated, complex dark fruit (blackberry, blueberry), steak/meat, bramble/oak, licorice and more I can't place. I can't remember the last time I smelled a nose this compelling and complex. Fully mature, the palate shows blackberry, black cherry, a bit of bbq and baking spice. Integrated medium+ acid and medium tannins. If you only have one open it now; I don't see this improving but it should drink well for a couple more years. (1124 views)
Tasted by hsacks on 9/10/2016 & rated 92 points: Surprisingly, this bottle was still very fresh and similar to the 9/4/10 bottle. (1088 views)
Tasted by PSUSteve on 9/10/2016 & rated 91 points: PnP. Drinking great from first pour. Dark fruit with plum and cherry. Well balanced. (1006 views)
Tasted by jcha24 on 6/20/2016 flawed bottle: bummer (1446 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 1/30/2016 & rated 91 points: Steak & Wine (House of Nanda - Chicago IL): Tasted blind, came across as very Rhone-like, with good power and concentration ans well as nicely balanced. Very good now. (1894 views)
Tasted by t_moderne on 11/8/2015 & rated 87 points: Pop and pour and served with food (pork chops, and rice and black beans, in case you were wondering). Followed for about 4 hours both the the food and on its own.
Dark black inky color. Nose shows a little camphor and ripe plum.
Dark black fruits - ripe plums, cherries and some chocolate. The wine is rich and a bit port-like. Quite sweet in its full ripe fruit. Slight note of oxidation. (941 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 8/6/2015: Carol and Steve always do such a nice job with their wines and this was no exception. Very old-school approach, lots of earth and bark in addition to some of the fruit. Mellow and very much a good food wine. Enjoyed. (967 views)
Tasted by cartime on 6/30/2015 & rated 92 points: Ready. For my tastes, I probably would have liked this a little better a couple of years ago. (1084 views)
Tasted by Diane (LI) on 4/12/2015: Hard to believe this is 14 years old. It tastes so young and is fresh with dark cherry and black olive. Bright acidity and long finish - delicious ! (1261 views)
Tasted by Eric Guido on 4/5/2015 & rated 92 points: The nose was earthy with a mix of sweet and savory blackberry, plum sauce and spice, hints of rosemary, green olive, crushed stone and undergrowth. It spread across the palate like waves of heavy silk, driven by a saline minerality, offset by ripe dark fruits, peppery spice and charred meat, which lasted into the finish. Dark fruits lingered on the palate for well over a minute. The 2001 Lagier Meredith Syrah is beautifully balanced and firmly in its drinking window, speaking more of the northern Rhone than California. Well done. (1565 views)
Tasted by DaButtah on 3/28/2015 & rated 92 points: Consistent with the last few notes. I did not get any of the port like flavor profile. Beautiful expression of syrah. (1141 views)
Tasted by tjib13 on 3/22/2015: Expressive aromas with animal, black olives, and spice. Flavors of dark fruit, spice, smoked meat. Good balance between the acidity and fine tannin. Long mouth coating finish revisited with black olive. (1154 views)
Tasted by arthrovine on 3/3/2015: This bottle was popnpoured, followed over 3 hours. Its initial aromas and flavors were as described by others. What was detracting about this bottle was a maderized raisiny almost porty subtly on the finish that was intermittently present through the night.

Some minty menthol cigar ash reminiscent of old aussie syrah also revealed itself intermittently.

Wine felt disjointed. One person wondered if there were some storage (albeit minimal) aberrations.

I think its on the precipice of decline. Storage should not have been an issue - direct from winery on Beserker Day 2015. (1295 views)
Tasted by whitmanlholt on 3/1/2015 & rated 92 points: Popped and poured. This is a robust black wine with modest sediment at the end of the bottle. On the nose, I get plum sauce, tobacco, and some secondary aromas of old chest that are much like a nice Bordeaux. In the mouth, the acid leads with some medium fruit leading into a spicy finish. Overall, this is a good wine albeit one that may be on the decline. 92 points. (1053 views)
Tasted by GTFreek on 2/18/2015: Killer to get to try this. Drinking wonderfully, and held it's own against three other 2001 classic Napa cabernets. (901 views)

Lagier Meredith

Producer website

"Syrah is our flagship wine. We’ve grown it since we began in 1994. Our vineyard site, with shallow rocky soil derived from an ancient uplifted seafloor and bathed in cool marine air from the nearby San Pablo Bay, brings out the best of Syrah’s savory, spicy, and floral attributes. Our wines are balanced, complex and long-lived. They reflect the restraint imposed on the vines by our mountain setting."

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
