My last bottle was almost 3 years ago. I felt it might improve for another 2 years. That seems to be the case. Dark red, scant fading. Blueberry on the pretty nose. Rich and precise on the palate, blackberry, blueberry, anise, bacon fat notes. Mid-palate is brighter and more red-fruited. Beautifully resolved tannins. Perfectly balanced acidity. Finishes long and gradual with dark fruits. In a beautiful place right now. Drink next 5 years. Patience is rewarded with the Lagier Meredith Syrahs.

Deep purple color with the slightest fading at the edges. Aromas of roasted meats and plums on the nose. The palate shows ripe red fruits, rare roast beef, anise, blueberries. The tannins are still firm, but soften with air. Perhaps a year or two more could help. Nice acidity. The wine quickly brightens with air and comes into a beautiful balance. Long finish with notes of anise and blueberries. Lovely, but perhaps could still improve for another 2 years.

Some wines poured blind (Maison Cafe in Dana Point, CA): Poured blind next to the 2003, and in my view, the 2001 really clobbered the 2003. The balance and youth of the 2001, which is pushing close to 2 decades old now, was pretty amazing. Perfume, tar and dark raspberry. Finishes youthful, showing the cool structure and balance of a wine that I suspect will age another 5, maybe even 10 years. Should have bought more of these in 2017 when I found it on Winebid.

Most of these have aged gracefully, but tonight’s was very tired.

Crumbling cork, clearly flawed, musty and ammonia aromas. Too bad.
