Community Tasting Notes (average 90.4 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 47 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Rani on 3/18/2024 & rated 92 points: Tasted blind. Bright red fruit, hint of white pepper, roses. It was impossible to guess as a 20 year old wine. Pristine bottle.By far the youngest tasting Produttori I recall, and it isn’t even the vineyard considered their best. Really surprising. (291 views)
(444 views)
Tasted by don_quichotte on 10/9/2021 & rated 92 points: À point. Delicious barbaresco. (1724 views)
Tasted by Dalex on 11/25/2020 & rated 89 points: Had another one of these 5 years ago that never came around when opened so I waited.

Results not much better. Believe the acidity has out lived the fruit

Upon opening there was decent fruit behind a large amount of tannin and with three hours the fruit faded a bit but so did the acidity. (1990 views)
Tasted by Krimoe on 2/29/2020 & rated 89 points: Needs air and some temperature for the fruit to show, but this is fading. (2310 views)
Tasted by hajoha on 9/12/2019: PdB Rio Sordo 2004.
Ville puttet denne i kategorien "halvsliten flaske" 87p (2879 views)
Tasted by portman63 on 9/9/2018 & rated 91 points: Had bit on opening which was tight and lean as I expected, but let it open up for 3-4 hours and it showed much better with some pasta and pesto and herbed parmesan chicken. Had violets on the nose after opening up and black cherries and tobacco on the palate. The tannins are fine but still ever present so while good opened 4+ hours early, it could use another 3-5 years to come into it's own from my experience. (2996 views)
Tasted by rnellans on 9/28/2017 & rated 92 points: Drank too young. Better on the second day after opening. Tight, closed initially. Adequate fruit and structure. Should develop with more age. (3194 views)
Tasted by ekallio on 12/23/2016: I had this a couple of months ago but still - a beauty. Wonderfully proportioned and elegant, not a powerhouse. Probably lots of upside potential. Looking forward to the other Produttori '04s. (3642 views)
Tasted by acyso on 12/21/2016 & rated 88 points: Older Barolos at Osteria Langhe (Chicago, IL): #8423/10000. Double-decanted six hours before. Compared to the 2004 Ovello, this was a much sterner and larger-scaled wine. The fruit here shows more prominently, and to use my favourite Trumpism, bigly. The palate's fruit shows a shade darker, and the palate presence is a little bit heavier. The sweetness is a bit more prominent as well, and the tannins harsher. Of course, this is all relative to the lighter Ovello -- this isn't anything like a bruiser of a wine. (4043 views)
Tasted by KeithAkers on 12/21/2016 & rated 93 points: Barolos and Barbarescos with some age (Osteria Langhe, Chicago IL): Nose: The nose is highly aromatic and deep with licorice, red cherries, spice tones, roasted herbs, rose petals, violets, and a touch of tobacco. This is a nose that one can easily get lost in while it also favors the upper register.

Taste: Medium bodied with high acidity and high tannins. The structure is youthful with the feel having a silkiness to it along with red cherries, spice tones, rose petals, violets, and some tobacco notes.

Overall: This is a beautiful and still youthful Rio Sordo. While there is an openness to it, it feels like there is still plenty of room to develop and even get better. (2798 views)
Tasted by wineamateur on 10/31/2016 & rated 87 points: Checking in on the Produttori 2004 Riservas; 10/16/2016-11/7/2016: Pale evolved red, perhaps just a bit muted in appearance. Ripe creamy fruit on the nose; a mix of red and black fruits - cherries and berries; a lean cranberry component; liquorice. Light to medium weight in the mouth, but yet mouth-filling. You get the sweetness of the fruit with a countervailing cranberry bitterness; pleasing but not quite integrated (3302 views)
Tasted by Redteeth on 9/21/2016: Very happy wit this bottle. It took a while to open up (not decanted) but then had a great balance of mature flavors and structure. (2613 views)
Tasted by clairenclarence on 11/7/2015 & rated 92 points: show lots or ripeness here.lively on the palate.stil nd some time (3385 views)
Tasted by Derek Darth Taster on 10/29/2015 & rated 91 points: S Housewarming (River Valley): Aired in decanter for 2 hours and drank over next 1 hour.
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of floral roses and bright red cherries. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol (14%), fine high tannins, medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of sour red cherries, sweet spice, tarry earth, slight tea leaves. Long finish.
Very good quality. Next to Gaja and Giacosa of course this seems to lack depth in comparison. But it is a very nice drinking traditional styled Barbaresco, without the branded price. Could still go on to develop nicely over the next 5 years.
Rio Sordo cru is in the Barbaresco commune. Floral, early maturing style. (3427 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 3/8/2015 & rated 91 points: Second Sunday Group: Produttori del Barbaresco Riservas (L's): Initially this is one dimensional, dominated by cherry notes and flavors and is very tannic and firm on the palate. As it sits, it becomes very perfumed and florally- quite pretty. Cherry and tannins still dominate the palate, again with quite a bit of acid. Finishes with good length.

My #2, Domino's #1
Group #2, 36 pts (3858 views)
Tasted by 560 B&W on 10/16/2014 & rated 91 points: Had a slight funky note but great fruit. Ready. (1269 views)
Tasted by Antti on 11/2/2013: Nebbiolo Night: Reticient, and a bit closed. But that shouldn't be a surprise. Flowery scents and orange fruits on the nose. Powerful, structured and reserved on the palate. Well-made traditional nebbiolo, but very young still. Although drinkable, needs quite a bit of more time to show its best. (4691 views)
Tasted by pren on 10/12/2013 & rated 89 points: good. not much impression. (1541 views)
Tasted by AtoZ on 5/10/2012 & rated 92 points: Needed 20 minutes to begin opening but ready to go. Algae or seaweed on nose. Cherry on palate. Nice balance. (5055 views)
Tasted by lafaverst on 4/30/2012: wonderful wine, perfect (4398 views)
Tasted by amateurwino on 3/11/2011 & rated 91 points: Supposedly the most structured of the nine hillsides; a lot more flavor impact than the Moccagatta though, so it actually feels like there less tannin. 90-92 (4333 views)
Tasted by Mark162 on 1/29/2011 & rated 90 points: modest nose. fairly tight, strong tannins, but good fruit and earth fragrances. opened up quite a bit about 2 hours after decanting. very nice. (4074 views)
Tasted by MauriceE on 7/18/2010 & rated 90 points: Even decanted this has little nose, it is still closed. So wait or decant hours before drinking. When it opens up it is really nice. (3679 views)
Tasted by pkatz on 5/23/2010 & rated 86 points: Oddly light and fruity for a Barbaresco. Pleasant. Maybe this will put on some flesh with time. (3083 views)

Produttori del Barbaresco

O ok just

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.
