Community Tasting Notes (average 91.9 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 435 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Lobonick on 11/2/2023 & rated 92 points: Beautiful wine with an elegance that comes with its age. There’s a honeyed balsamic note on the nose that is spectacular. Palate is less rustic and less tannic than I recall from nine years ago. This wine seems to float over the tongue without losing its deep balsamic notes. I’m wishing I had had this with a rosemary-infused dish. (579 views)
Tasted by jc510 on 10/28/2023: Very good place right now, rich fruit, well integrated, long pleasant finish. Took to a large public tasting. (546 views)
Tasted by Lobonick on 9/25/2023 & rated 92 points: Beautiful. (645 views)
Tasted by bdublu on 6/19/2023 & rated 89 points: The cork was a mess. The last piece was not removable and needed to be pushed into the bottle. Decanted and filtered out the cork pieces. That said, this is still a very nice wine but on the down side compared to the last one we opened almost 10 years ago. The fruit has subsided and a hint of licorice is noted now. Paired well with a couple of two inch strip steaks, rosemary roasted potatoes and green beans in EVOO and garlic. Happy Fathers Day to me!! (719 views)
Tasted by Hamersly on 3/22/2023 & rated 93 points: Dark, plummy and rich with no hard edges, this is drinking beautifully. Enjoy within the next year or so. (880 views)
Tasted by Gregmonroe on 11/12/2022: This was a really tasty bottle and in a great spot. Huge nose of chocolate and blue fruit, which remained consistent on the palate. Dark purple in the glass. This is in a great drinking window now, and I wish I had more. (947 views)
Tasted by bacchus on 5/19/2022 & rated 93 points: we are visiting boca to attend boca bacchanal. when we are here make a point of visiting Richard at The Best Cellar. I repatriated this bottle to share with pat and the group at the insider's table including Becky, Andrea and spouses. As testimony to the subjectivity involved i as well as the role of ego/pride when tasting wine, for me, this was the WOTN. everyone else liked the wine they had brought the best. the wine shows dark color. no browning or fading. opulent nose. rich mouth feel. great complexity on the palate. elements of ripe fruit, earth and smoke. the wine was still going strong on Saturday. Can probably continue to evolve for a few more years. Sediment on last pour. will wait patiently for the opportunity to enjoy my remaining bottle. (854 views)
Tasted by wineismylife on 3/19/2022 & rated 93 points: WIML93

Tasted non blind.

Dark garnet to purple color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of aspirin, smoked meat, black pepper, currants and plums. Flavors of plums, currants and black berries. Medium acidity, medium tannin, full bodied. Drink now. (1174 views)
Tasted by ONEFIVE on 2/23/2022: Hedonistic nose with black cherry cola, cedar and floral/earthy notes. Fully integrated with light tannin, med- acidity and medium body. The finish on this is impressively long and pleasant. What a great wine for the price. There’s likely another 5-10 years of enjoyment here. (982 views)
Tasted by europat55 on 1/14/2022 & rated 90 points: Juan Gil and El Nido Jumillas 2002-2012 (Tasted Blind) (Virtual Tasting): Nose: 91; Palate: 89 (Tasted blind) (1071 views)
Tasted by richardkim on 12/30/2021 & rated 93 points: Dark berry flavors backed by firm tannins, hints of red raspberry and fine acidity. Subtle secondary notes of wood. Medium bodied, mature, and well balanced. (754 views)
Tasted by mdkraft99 on 4/10/2021 & rated 92 points: Opened for about an hour, then poured and drank over about 2 hrs, absolutely delicious! Initially it was a little bright with a little cherry and even raspberry, but then mellowed out as it opened in the glass - plum, dark fruit, tobacco, hints of vanilla and almonds, smooth tannins, firm acidity but very mellow and well integrated, medium-long finish. So glad we waited to drink this! We drank this with the 2006 Clio - we liked the 2006 slightly better but this was also great. (1309 views)
Tasted by DH90 on 3/8/2021 & rated 89 points: Excellent deep purple-red color. Has softened up nicely with time although it remains very concentrated. The aromatics were somewhat disappointing with coconut and vanilla coming through that suggested the oak was counterbalancing the fruit. The wine held together well over a two day period. Would consider drinking in the next few years as I suspect that this will not improve further and the fruit may continue to fade. (1338 views)
Tasted by IAmVintage on 5/24/2020 & rated 92 points: Aged perfectly with wonderful depth of deep dark fruit, leaning towards black cherry & current (I don't get blueberry myself), bite of velvety tannins resolving into a long sticky tart tongue coating finish. I'd score a bit higher if not for the 15% alc which is slightly noticeable to me. (1830 views)
Tasted by Thomas D on 4/21/2020 & rated 91 points: Rich dense violet color;plum and cherry nose with a hint of tar; plum and dark berry fruit with nicely balanced tannins and acid. Smooth and enjoyable. This has aged gracefully. (1722 views)
Tasted by J Pas on 12/28/2019 & rated 91 points: Beautiful balanced Spanish red. Still drinking very well. Agree at peak but will be good for a few years (1969 views)
Tasted by pcarmich on 9/24/2019 & rated 93 points: At its peak, the tannins have disolved and now balance the acidity and the alcohol very nicely. This should be very good over the next couple of years and decline slowly afterwards. (1944 views)
Tasted by Hansvo on 7/22/2019 & rated 93 points: This is drinking really well right now. Fruit has become more integrated, other notes contributing now. Tannins fully smoothed out. Universally loved by the group (1943 views)
Tasted by Bellissimo on 12/16/2018: Big, modern, extracted, whatever you'd like to call it. This is not light and elegant and its not trying to be.

Deep dark color. Blueberry, cocoa, vanilla, a little leather. Plush mouthfeel, medium+ length, while everything is big it is somehow balanced by the acids, fruit and tannins. Nice on a winters night snuggled up on the couch. (2228 views)
Tasted by Winiac on 11/14/2018 & rated 92 points: Very ripe, and sweet red fruit with tons of American oak that is (almost) all absorbed by the fruit. Balanced acid and velvety tannins with good structure. Medium length and pleasant finish. Has the delicious factor and is the best full bodied red to drink without food. A definite crowd pleaser. (2140 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 10/27/2018 & rated 93 points: 4th Saturday Group: South America & Spain (M&LA's): Double blind. Aromas of chocolate and dark plummy fruit along with herbs and spice. Fine-grained tannins; abundant dark fruit flavors and chocolate in the finish. Lush and modern, but thoroughly enjoyable. (2174 views)
Tasted by vin43 on 9/18/2018 & rated 90 points: May be best to drink likely to decline in quality (1963 views)
Tasted by Whine-oh on 9/14/2018 & rated 92 points: Decanted table side at restaurant. No sed,no bricking. Modern style still lots of fruit up front on nose and palate. Not too over the top, Balanced. Some good structure, but ready to go. A good contrast to our second wine, a 94 Mondavi rez cab. (1650 views)
Tasted by walkerjfw on 9/2/2018 & rated 89 points: Great dinner hosted by Doug and Debbie, this one brought by Joe V. Later in the evening. PnP, drank over 30 minutes.

From prior notes: "Dark purple color. Nose was dark fruits, cocoa. Palate is rich and viscous (a bit too much), blueberries, dark fruit, leather, vanilla oak. A bit of heat that dissipates after being open for a while. Tannins have resolved."

This is holding up well. A big wine to be sure, you have to like the extracted style. Made by an Aussie winemaker, I thought the higher ABV might overwhelm the fruit. This still drinking well, expressive/fruit forward wine that is showing nice secondary notes at this point. In its zone now... (1445 views)
Tasted by Coachron13 on 8/16/2018 & rated 90 points: Might be bottle variation, but this has become much more old world in the year since our last bottle. Still good but not like its prior life. (1488 views)

2007 Bodegas El Nido Jumilla Clio

Winemaker's notes: A glass-coating opaque purple, it exhibits a sensational nose of earth, mushroom, leather, blueberry, and blackberry jam. On the palate the wine is supple-textured, complex, with vibrant flavors of spicy blue and black fruits and a big-time WOW factor. This is a totally hedonistic effort with exceptional length and balance. It is remarkably light on its feet for such a powerful wine.

BLEND: Monastrell 70%, Cabernet Sauvignon 30%.

Vinos de España - Wines of Spain (Instituto Español de Comercio Exterior) | Wikipedia
Wine Map on weinlagen-info

Spain is the third largest wine producing nation in the world, occupying the majority of the Iberian Peninsula with vast diversity in climate, culture, and of course, wine. From inky, dark reds of the [Priorat] to dry, white Finos from Andalusia, Spain can easily boast of elaborating a wide variety of notable styles. Within Spain there are currently 62 demarcated wine regions, of which a handful have gained international recognition: [Rioja], Priorat and [Ribera del Duero]. Yet these regions are only a small sample of the high quality wines Spain produces. Regions such as Cava, Penedes, Somontano, Galicia, Rueda and Jerez are only a few of the numerous regions worthy of exploration throughout Spain. Spain can also lay claim to having the most land under vine in the world, growing up to, by some accounts, 600 indigenous varietals of which Tempranillo is their most well known. Other popular varietals include [Garnacha], Bobal and Monastrell for reds and for whites; the infamous [sic] Palomino Fino grape which is used in the production of sherry wine, Pedro Ximenez in Montilla Morilles, Albarino used in the creation of the bright, effervescent wines of Galicia, and Verdejo in Rueda. - Source: - Catavino.net

Spain is not in the forefront of winemaking for its dessert wines, other than for its sweet wines from Sherry country including the highly revered Olorosos (when sweetened). But apart from Sherry Spain has a range of styles of dessert wines, ranging from the those made from the Pedro Ximenez grape primarily in Jerez and Montilla-Moriles) to luscious, red dessert wines made in the Mediterranean from the Garnacha (Grenache) grape. Some good Moscatels are made in Mallorca, Alicante and Navarre. The northwest corner of Spain, Galicia, with its bitter Atlantic climate, is even making dessert wines, called “Tostadillos” in the village of Ribadivia (similar to France’s “Vin de Paille”). The Canary Islands have made interesting dessert wines for centuries (they are mentioned by Shakespeare, for example) and in recent years the quality of winemaking has been improved and the Canary Islands wines are being better marketed now. The winemaking styles for “Vinos Dulces” are also diverse, from “Late Harvest” (Vendimia Tardía) to “Fortified Wines” (Fermentación Parcial). Based on in-spain.info.

Murcia

Located in Southeastern Spain, the "lost" region of Yecla lies to the east of Jumilla and to the west of Alicante. Fortunately, this region was spared much of the wrath of the phylloxera plague, and many ungrafted and extremely old vines remain. The Yecla region’s progressive leader, Bodegas Castaño, has long been an advocate of the Monastrell varietal, also known as Mourvèdre. The varietal is best regarded for its influence on the wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape where the terroir and climate is not dissimilar to that of Yecla. Both benefit from a very warm, Mediterranean climate with warm days and nights.
