Tasted by Kemo Sabe on 10/15/2023 & rated 90 points: Felt this was good but not great. Nice raspberry, dark fruits, spices, garrigue. Black currant. A bit one dimensional and didnt get a ton better with air. Might need more time? I liked this wine but was expecting a bit more. Not at all in decline...well made a solid producer in CdP (638 views)
Tasted by z_willus_d on 4/2/2023 & rated 93 points: This rejected bottle had some staining on its label, but the cork came out in perfect condition. For this reason rejected for a sale, but I'm so glad it was. This is undoubtedly the finest CdP I've tasted from the mid/late aughts by a long shot. I really enjoyed this wine near release back when I was a big fan of CdP, and it's amazing to see this wine has held on to or improved on all of its charms whist somehow managing to simultaneously eschew the predilection towards picking up flaws and defects like so many of its peers. The wine is still fresh and vibrant, particularly on day1 open, showing handfuls of mountain berry fruit mixed with tar, burnt herbs, and still loads of fine tannic structure. On night-2, the wine turned slightly more tertiary, but it skirted any of the pruny characteristics of an overaged, over-oaked, over-manipulated CdP of its era. This '08 vintage at Charvin was deemed lighter and more classic with, of course, lower relative scores on release, but it's now showing that balance wins all in the game of aging wine. This beats out all those 95-100-point monstrosities from '07. Whatchagonnado?!? (960 views)
Tasted by danstrings on 11/16/2022 & rated 92 points: Wonderful sappy juicy fruit balanced with garrigue/earth and terroir. Always love Charvin. (1353 views)
Tasted by pbaek on 8/1/2022: Wonderful, floral nose, cherry fruit, plums. Light and airy palate, lovely plummy fruit with marks of menthol, chalk. Unresolved tannins, more to come. Great wine, as usual, from Charvin. Reminds me of the 2004. (1405 views)
Tasted by pbaek on 8/30/2021: Light and airy, pretty red fruit, flower, maybe a hint of chalk. Great purity of fruit, easy flowing, definitely STGT. Great bottle of wine. (2044 views)
Tasted by lake.vino on 6/5/2021 & rated 93 points: This is a hard review to write; my palate has been moving away from southern Rhone for several years. That said, I respect the complexity and relative balance of this wine. Nose is a spicy beguiling mix of raspberry and blueberry, a bit of garrigue, substantial Mediterranean spices. A bit of black currant too, and anise. Palate relatively balanced, a good mix of primary and secondary notes. Tannins resolving but supporting structure. Better acid than many cdp keep this fresh. Finish is long and fruit and spice driven. Complexity good. This is an incredibly well made wine that I really respect. But I’m not sure I like it. (1747 views)
Tasted by beatles on 1/11/2021 & rated 91 points: While very fine on it's own, served vis-a-vis the Rayas, this was heavily overmatched, Very good freshness, balance and lkocal feel, Charvins elegance is here, and there is no signs of fatigue, certainly a lighter vintage, suiting the domaine-style.

Tasted by tomlee on 11/5/2020 & rated 93 points: Ruby red in color. 14.5% ABV. Awesome, perfumed nose of red fruits, wet stones and roasted herbs. Medium body with perfect acidity. Lighter in style but the wine speaks to the Charvin house style. Kirsch, raspberry, licorice and pepper on the palate. Exceptional length on the finish. Absolutely charming wine from an average vintage. Best over the next several years. (1921 views)
Tasted by Cote d'Or on 8/10/2020: Tasted over 2 hrs
-med dark red purple minimal clearing
-kirsch
-med/med+ acidity, med weight nothing but heat and some fading grenache fruit, bitter molasses and iodine with med- tannins on the finish
-time has not been kind to this bottle (1736 views)
Tasted by pbaek on 6/16/2020: Another great bottle that shows why Charvin is one of the domaines in Châteauneuf I continue to buy from. This is so light, airy and floral, there’s a lovely display of light red fruit on the nose. Great purity of fruit on the palate, light red cherry fruit, framboise, earth, some tannins. Beau vin, bravo. (1493 views)
Tasted by moxielady on 6/1/2020 & rated 92 points: drinking well, smooth tannins, nice fruit and acid (1451 views)
Tasted by ClaytonDave on 5/3/2020: Donated. (1317 views)
Tasted by moxielady on 3/16/2020 & rated 92 points: Very drinkable. Nice smooth tannins and fruit. Light acid (1385 views)
Tasted by pbaek on 11/22/2019: Great showing. Floral, light and airy fruit with notes of raspberry and strawberry. Almost Burgundian, gently spiced. Still primary but with no hard edges, tannins resolved. Such a pleasure to drink next to the heavy-handed 2003 Pegau. Charvin performs extraordinarily well in the so-called lighter vintages: 2004, 2006, 2008. Reminds me of Rayas. (1723 views)
Tasted by Chuck Miller on 5/16/2019: My first bottle of this was opened in 2015, and I mentioned firm tannins and waiting 5-15 years. OK, so 5 years later, his bottle has had the tannins fall away, but the fruit is pretty blah, fairly soft with low acidity. Nothing to get excited about or to inspire further aging. (1893 views)
Tasted by up4wine on 3/20/2019 & rated 89 points: Some Charvin vintages and bottle are fairly dazzling, but other times they seem disjointed and ho-hum. This is one of the later. (1819 views)
Tasted by pbaek on 3/10/2019: Pretty wine, light red fruit, perhaps slightly evolved. Great purity of fruit, spicy notes. Not sure how this will age from here. (1872 views)
Tasted by Cote d'Or on 1/29/2019: PopnPour, tasted over 2 hrs
-dark red with faint purple and minimal clearing at edge
-kirsch juniper berry gin licorice
-med/med+ acidity, med weight bright ripe grenache kirsch medicinal noticeable EtOH bitter bite on finish with med tannins
-overt grenache-ness dominates in this vintage, no discernible mature elements, still on the upswing if the depth is adequate to buffer the heat (1795 views)
Tasted by galewskj on 5/18/2018 & rated 91 points: Bring a Very Good Bottle (Kenwood Restaurant): This was consumed alongside the 2001 Charvin. There was no question as to my favorite, but this wine offered a lot. As is typical for these off vintages, they mature quicker, so you still have some vibrant fruit, and you also get secondary qualities. This was a delight to drink, perhaps because it is a style of wine that I enjoy. (2541 views)
Tasted by wagonwine on 5/17/2018 & rated 91 points: Slate, blackberry, and white pepper. Much leaner than the 2001 tasted vertically. Drink by 2025. (2065 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 5/17/2018 & rated 92 points: An Interesting Mix (The Kenwood, Mpls, MN): Dark red color. PNP, drank a glass over an hour side by side with the 2001. While the '01 is in a class by itself, this is still a winner in its own right. The style is still all Charvin and these so called off vintages are what I prefer. Medium plus body, dried spice, pepper, wood tones, red and darker red fruits. 91+ to 92pts. Darn good. (2494 views)
Tasted by Vino Me on 5/8/2018 & rated 92 points: Opened by billhike. Not decanted. Crimson red color without any bricking. An earthy old world styled wine with notes of black currants, spices and herbs. Meaty texture with firm tannins at 10 years old. Smooth finish. 91-92 points. (2299 views)
Tasted by davidspieker on 5/7/2018 & rated 90 points: Medium red murky color. Red fruit and musty aromas. Rich and earthy flavors of blackberry and raspberry with some raisin on a lengthy finish. Soft and luscious with lots of character. (1788 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 5/4/2018 & rated 92 points: Courtesy of billhike, and another '08 that is drinking very nicely. Spice, red fruit, licorice and herb notes. Medium-bodied with red fruit and spice tones on the palate. Finishes with good length and balance. (1574 views)
Tasted by Dave Dalluge on 7/8/2017 & rated 91 points: Drinking really well. Impressive nose of red fruit and dried herbs. Great on the palate, with expansive red fruit and excellent balance. Still fairly tannic on the finish. Long finish. (2892 views)

(CHARVIN) Charvin Dear Friends, After consuming far more of this wine than I care to admit, it is a breath of fresh air that should be taken seriously. For the current price, I'm tempted to classify it as one of the finest deals going in “drink-now” Chateauneuf-du-Pape but many of you will pooh-pooh it simply due to the vintage – don’t. If you are into Chambolle-Musigny, this top-level rendition of Charvin shows a playful streak of Amoureuses meshed with the appeal of old-school Châteauneuf. It is a simply delicious wine with a well-heeled/refined, somewhat retro feel to its relatively low-alcohol framework (I believe it is “only” 14.00-14.50% versus the current trend of 15.5+% in most of the region). The wine’s immediate strength lies in its gorgeous aromatics of kirsch, stone, garrigue, iron and blood that waft above floaty fresh fruit. Not to be outdone, the pinpoint flavors linger in an ever-so elegant fashion - it is nuance that captivates here - not brute extract. Laurent Charvin is completely enamored with the 2008 - if you ask him in private, he believes it is far more appealing than the 2007 and it’s tough to argue. I realize the investment potential may lie in the 2007 vintage (in general) and, certainly in time, most of the 2007’s should surpass their 2008 counterparts from a complexity standpoint but what about over the next 4-6 years? What about pure “drinking” potential versus the investment? Just like 2008 in Bordeaux, the shrewd consumer has a bevy of delicious examples from Chateauneuf-du-Pape in 2008 to actually drink and not worry about the hefty entrance fee (or that you are opening a potential auction windfall). In addition, the best 2008s have a style that is preferred by the core of our email list – sifted, mineral-rich and aromatic with a lightly tannic kirsch-coated shell versus the overdone/overripe Grenache of many 2007s (and many 2009’s for that matter). The 2008 Charvin is a wine that harkens to the early 1980s – it is a lovely bottle of wine through and through – no apologies necessary: A particularly strong showing. One shipment only at this price directly from the source: 2008 Domaine Charvin Chateauneuf-du-Pape - (considering the 2007 is $60-100, the relative value of the 2008 speaks for itself – compare at $40-50+ in Europe, I'm not sure how high it will be in the US) FIRST COME FIRST SERVED up to 24/person until we run out To order: niki@garagistewine.com This parcel is set to arrive in a few weeks (please check OARS for local pick up after October 15th). OWNERS & HISTORY:
The Domaine Charvin was founded by Guillaume Charvin in 1851. 16 years later, in 1867, the entire planting area was destroyed by vine fretters. But William Charvin and other members of the family didn’t let this get them down, and replanted the soil. At this time, the family name also changed from Charavin to Charvin – due to an administrative error. The winery is situated in the northwestern part of the region next to Château Maucoil.

The family began its work with four hectares of land in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The first bottling at the winery – intended only for private consumption – took place in 1951. During the following years, most of the wine was sold to dealers. In 1990, with Laurent Charvin, the sixth generation took over the family business. During his first year, he produced some 8,000 bottles of wine. The remainder was still sold to local dealers. Since 1990, the amount of wine produced has increased each year. At the moment, the winery has 8.2 hectares of land in three different lieux-dits: Maucoil, l’Arnesque, and Cabrières, all in the northwestern part of the region. The soil there consists mainly of limestone and loam, and is more or less covered with stones. The average age of the grapevines is 45 years. Laurent Charvin loves to philosophize about nature, adjusting himself to whatever happens outside: to the weather, the soil, and the grapevines. He explains:

“I’m not sure whether the quality of the wines increases with passion; the potentials of the soil and of the grapevines are more important. You have to comprehend what you have. Besides, you should never try to copy your neighbors, because each parcel has unique material with its own DNA.”

GEOGRAPHY & VARIETALS:
Only a single red Châteauneuf-du-Pape is produced; it consists of 85% Grenache, 5% Syrah, 5% Mourvèdre, and 5% Vaccarèse. The wine is made in a very traditional manner. No stems are removed; after sorting, the grapes are lightly pounded and then poured into fermentation tanks made of concrete. The wine is recirculated daily during alcoholic fermentation and maceration, which last around three weeks. Laurent is no friend of excessive extraction of the wine, but rather aims at more balance, freshness, and structure in the wine. Experimentally, and always striving to maintain optimum freshness, Laurent uses concrete tanks exclusively during the ripening process lasting eighteen months. All of the wine is bottled without interruption and without filtering, in order to avoid even the slightest differences from one bottle to the next. Annual production amounts to around 30,000 bottles.

"It would be no problem for me to make two cuvées: a powerful one and a light one. But I am convinced that only a mixture of the two will make a wine the way a wine should be, and the way I like it!"
- Laurent Charvin

Domaine Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Located in the northwest part of the appellation, with vines chiefly in Cabrieres, Maucoil, and Mont Redon, Laurent Charvin makes one of the most elegant and seamless Châteauneuf-du-Papes. Opting to produce a single cuvée, the winemaking here is staunchly traditional, with no destemming and fermentation and aging occurring all in concrete tanks for 21 months, bottled unfiltered. This is a wine that can age 20 years from any vintage as well as be accessible quite young with just a little breathing.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
