Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 52 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by chcook on 1/7/2024: PNP. Cork perfect. Color color ruby w bricking edges. Nose seems more secondary w cherry and cranberry. Swishing shows structure. There is a beam of oak that everything hangs on here. Sipping shows the fruit but benefits from aeration. I understand why others are disappointed right now. I think it is starting to emerge from a shut down phase. Will wait 5 to try again (561 views)
Tasted by neilsforest on 11/4/2023: Lovely nose, great complexity and decent length Have 3 more bottles and will aim to drink them in next couple of years (693 views)
Tasted by MarkusBig on 10/20/2023: Opened for a Salmon pairing. I agree with Mary, the wine is past it's prime. (664 views)
Tasted by MarylovesParis on 9/22/2023 & rated 60 points: Past its prime. Fruit richness was completely gone, nothing but dry one dimensional flavor despite letting it breathe. So disappointing, was hoping for that velvet berries characteristic the wine merchant promised this would supply. (714 views)
Tasted by Sotto325 on 2/25/2023 & rated 89 points: Their 375s are generally reliable, as opposed to many Burgunsy reds, but this one trailed off too quickly. The same higher- toned yet soft red fruit notes on the nose and palate, but the finish too rapidly dissipated and acid crept forth. Drink up. (1372 views)
Tasted by probraided on 2/18/2022: If tasted blind, on PnP it has similarities with Thibault Liger Belair LSG. The nose is very similar (burnt rubber component). The palate is initially reserved, but fills out with air. Strawberries, soil, tart cherry. Velvety character. Very elegant. Lovely wine and excellent for the vintage. It seems that quality producers managed this vintage well. Fully mature, at peak. Needs 30-60 min of air to fully open up. (2217 views)
Tasted by RED AND BLACK on 2/13/2022 & rated 92 points: Not sure why 2011 is considered a vintage of lower quality, just because it is lighter. Surely many 2011 are really great, and if lighter they are very elegant and velvety to drink. Not all wines need to explode in your mouth. This is a very nice wine, fully mature, gentle and elegant and very pleasant to drink with food or on its own. It has earth and a touch of licorice at the end. This is in a good place, I think drink now and in next 3/4 years (1615 views)
Tasted by Sotto325 on 2/12/2022 & rated 92 points: Very nice with a 30 minute decant. Crisp, nicely integrated,acid-baacked, bright-to-medium red, with a nose of bright tart cherry, and a palate of dark cherry, bright cherry, a hint of rose petal ,and bramble. The 2011 does not suffer from any green notes, but it is also lighter and less rich in darker red fruit than the 2005 or 2012. Crisp, high -qualitly 1 ere Cru Beaune—always elegant. (1756 views)
Tasted by StainedGlass on 11/21/2021 & rated 90 points: Clear ruby color and medium bodied, with light but juicy red fruit and spice, a touch of barnyard, and delightful balance. Drink now to 2026. (2052 views)
Tasted by peternelson on 9/11/2021 & rated 92 points: Lovely nose of perfume, forest floor, a bit of brett/barn and animale; good t's, only thing wrong was mid-palate/structure was a little light but profile was really nice. Nice surprise. Hiro's (2063 views)
Tasted by MichielH on 4/12/2021: Nice clear transparent and promising in the glass. The bouquet somewhat light initially with hints of cigar tabaco. On the pallet, certainly honey blent into a noble tea of ripe prunes with ever so slight red apple juice. Tones develop towards more chocolate; however, the hibiscus honey remains. The wine has a certain length, which is very pleasant. A very nice wine to enjoy. (1878 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 9/6/2020 & rated 90 points: Red fruit with background spice and faint earth notes. Very good balance, this starts out lighter styled but picks up weight towards a medium-long finish. In its peak drinking window. (3863 views)
Tasted by Motz on 7/27/2020 & rated 90 points: A fine testament to why Burgundy can be such a crapshoot.

Very lean, with green peppercorn and herbaceous notes, suggestive of underripeness. It shows hints of sous-bois, graphite, and a little grip.

Otherwise, lacking appeal and balance.

Awful QPR! (3199 views)
Tasted by Sotto325 on 6/26/2020 & rated 92 points: These are wonderful wines. Such a pleasure, when ready, to consume with their elegant yet earthy evocation of a truly top-rung Beaune. It screams cherry of all types: dark red cherry in color with that faint hint of teasing lightish red burgundy that belies its weight; crisp tart red cherry on the nose and the initial tannic attack; tartness mellowing with 45 minutes in the decanter, opening up rich sweet cherry accompanied by moist earth, tart cherry, plum and distinct oak, all wrapped in a seemingly light robe. Terrific with a savory chicken dish. Good to go (with decanting) for the next decade. (2594 views)
Tasted by MichielH on 12/5/2019 & rated 90 points: Relatively dark transparent pinot noir.
Minerality in bouquet, some flower.
Lively cherry juice. Lots of sun. A bit toasted with associated vanilla. Tannins still lively and gentile.
Certainly, a nice glass with filet. (2967 views)
Tasted by jee27 on 8/20/2019 & rated 92 points: Surprisingly open and this vintage has been providing much pleasure this year. I'll wait for at least another 5 years for the last one. (3353 views)
Tasted by Wandrewsu on 7/11/2019 & rated 93 points: Exceptional for the vintage. Good now and could turn into a monster. (2237 views)
Tasted by Mazy on 3/8/2018 & rated 91 points: PNP. (4058 views)
Tasted by hackey37 on 8/11/2017 & rated 93 points: Color is dense garnet with a hint of yellow orange on the rim and is barely translucent. The aromas are dark cherry, sassafras, pepper, dill, mushroom and earthy barnyard and floral hints. The tastes are pepper, sour cherry, tangy raspeberry, dill, tea, and provencial herbs. The tannins are furry velvet and the acidity is mouth watering. (4398 views)
Tasted by Snowryeder on 6/25/2017 & rated 90 points: Not one of their best vintages but very enjoyable. (4016 views)
Tasted by Tim Heaton on 1/25/2017: I spent about 35 minutes with a single glass, swirling and sniffing, mostly because after my first taste I thought this would need some type of miracle to rise up to the level of pleasurable; that miracle never arrived. Coarse and ribbed with jutting lines of acid. Not so sure time is going to be any kinder to this than it's already been. If you've got a bunch, consider selling them (and I've been a fan for nearly 20 years). If it's negative bottle variation, I can't say I'm not overdue.

Audozed 90 minutes, served non-blind. (5205 views)
Tasted by StainedGlass on 9/26/2016 & rated 89 points: Medium light ruby. Unmistakable Burgundy nose and color but a bit rough around the edges. The red fruits are still youthful and there is plenty of acidity and earthiness, but it has not come together yet and perhaps needs more time. I would hold my next bottle until at least 2018 and give it a decent decanting. (4736 views)
Tasted by RayOB on 4/14/2016 & rated 90 points: Drank at Nicolas
Red berries, strawberries and spice on the nose. Light fresh palate. (4054 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 3/5/2016: From a Coravined bottle. Medium red. All green aromas. Medium weight, some red fruit, but mostly earth and screechy acidity. No. (3483 views)
Tasted by scott w on 11/4/2015 & rated 91 points: Tried one for science, very young with elbows and knees but I really enjoyed the pure cherry strawberry fruit and spice. Mineral (3647 views)

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio
