Community Tasting Notes (average 93.5 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 34 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by danielbleier on 9/27/2023: no rating as this was ruined in some way (not corked)...flat and flaccid, tasted a bit sour as well. Both bottles I purchased from this vendor were off. (567 views)
Tasted by Aravind Asok on 7/8/2023: La Ronde's note is spot-on for my btl as well. On the nose: caramel and pear, honey with a touch of toast. On the palate: ok acidity, apricot, marmelade, caramel. Finish is a touch short, but an excellent example from the vintage imo. (575 views)
Tasted by La Ronde on 5/26/2023 & rated 94 points: This was not an academic exercise. Deep gold with almost amber tinge, nose like pear tarts, toasted. Full bodied and feeling like it's higher in alcohol than the label states (13%). The signature waxiness has evolved into a caramel quality, but caramel without sweetness. Dried stone fruits. So good. Drink or hold for maybe another couple, three years. (599 views)
Tasted by anstruletz on 4/19/2023: Interesting wine - deep golden. I'm not sure if it's too old or in a weird spot. Not unenjoyable, but more academic than a pleasure. At least to me. (736 views)
Tasted by danielbleier on 4/14/2023 flawed bottle: sadly oxidized. One bottle left - need to try soon (677 views)
 Tasted by levicn on 12/23/2022 & rated 92 points: (765 views)
Tasted by Ozen on 5/31/2022 & rated 93 points: Great experience to drink this 2006 version of Ex Voto Blanc versus the 2010 ex voto blanc. The 2010 truly is a legendary wine, while the 2006 is a very good and typical hermitage blanc. Great Ex Voto personality, rich in flavour, with the famous petrol. Better day 2 and even better day 3. fully in the drinking window and a pleasure to have over multiple days.

I would say the Ex Voto Blanc in top vintages is superior to the great wines of J.L. Chave Blanc and Chapoutier (1084 views)
Tasted by Rezy13 on 11/23/2021: Tuesday Night Double Blind $50+ (Bin 75 Alpharetta, GA): More golden color; aged nose, pie crust, premox, sherry, nutty, oak, dense and weighty; '04 Verget Batard? (1323 views)
(1169 views)
Tasted by maaike2 on 2/27/2021 & rated 93 points: Deep yellow-orange wine with an extreme rich bouquet of ripe pear, peach and nutty impressions, signs of an oxidative influence (?) , long finish. (1696 views)
Tasted by FransS on 2/25/2021 & rated 95 points: A serie of superb Old World wines (Amsterdam): A deep golden, but lively, colour with also a 'deep' taste, lovely nutty, mokka, cocoa, blossomed with aeration showing bitters and a compensating ripeness/sweetness and a very tasty finish; so powerful that the wine could not be very subtle, but I did not care. (1617 views)
Tasted by Palanoue219 on 3/23/2020 & rated 88 points: Might have been past it’s prime, however this was my first “aged” white wine, so I have no baseline to compare as to what aged whites should taste like. It was bought from the store (SAQ) by me and stored in a cellar so I know it was handled properly.

Nose: lots of honey, and some flower.
Eyes: beautiful gold colour, almost looked like an aged Sauternes.
Palate: fruit seemed completely gone. Notes of honey as the nose suggested was very present. Lots of minerals as secondary. Had a slight wet asphalt taste. The taste would last for a long time in the mouth.

Overall very good. I was expecting more of a wow factor considering the price tag and the reputation. However this might be because of my limited experience in aged whites, or because it was simply on its decline. (1632 views)
Tasted by k H i L o on 8/21/2018 & rated 96 points: C'est tellement sublime qu'il me semble évident que les Saints acceptent toujours ce genre d'offrandes pour exaucer les vœux des épicuriens... (2298 views)
Tasted by Mascarello59 on 8/12/2018 & rated 94 points: Very healthy bottle bought at an auction recently. Leather, hazelnut, lemon zest, floral notes. Big, meaty, broad shouldered wine. Long complex and changing finish with lots of flavour and aromas. (2089 views)
Tasted by bubbachumps on 3/28/2018 & rated 90 points: Dark yellow color. Notes of clove, some saline and a touch of honeysuckle. In the mouth, large-scaled, but good underlying acidity. This wine didn't do it for me. It was pleasant, just not what I was expecting based on the notes and pedigree. (2320 views)
Tasted by jsmorris707 on 3/20/2018 & rated 94 points: Similar to my note on the 05 (although not tried at the same time), SO'd for a few hrs, deep gold, thick, nutty fruit, long finish; delicious, unique, ready to drink (2203 views)
Tasted by Neecies on 2/1/2018 & rated 96 points: Amber color. Rich and profound; not just a wine, an important wine experience. Baked red apple skin, peaches, grilled lemon and toasted hazelnut are backed up by strands of peanut brittle and an herb component in the long finish I couldn't quite put a name to, maybe bay leaf. Wow. (2078 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 4/20/2017 & rated 90 points: Reductive for Rhone white and enjoyable. (2132 views)
Tasted by la turque on 7/11/2016 & rated 96 points: Consistent notes. Tasted beside the 2007 vintage of the same wine. I found the 2006 to have brighter acidity and better balance. The 2007 was a tad flabby in the mid-palate. (2847 views)
Tasted by acheng on 4/13/2016 & rated 93 points: Lovely typicity of Northern Rhone with quince, floral, hazelnut and thick. Very long and mouth filling. (2518 views)
Tasted by FrancoisD on 11/27/2015 & rated 95 points: Superbe couleur ambrée
Nez très aromatique dénotant complexité
Arômes: abricots, herbe, acacias, noix de pin
Un nectar! (2790 views)
Tasted by Cheungtp on 9/18/2015 & rated 95 points: This is a white wine that's quite different in style in comparison to other whites. Golden in color, rich and viscous when you swell the glass. The bouquet initially is filled with apricot, green apple and lemon zest, it would make you think that this might be a sweet white instead. But that's the deceiving part, the most interesting aspect of this wine, when the wine enters your palate - bang! rich juice packed with ample amount of refreshing acidiy, absolutely no sweet notes as the nose suggested prior. Wonderful structure and balance, fruity note and wine's characters will keep your imagination on-going for minutes after the finish. More amazingly, the wine sat in the decanter, no chilling, and still going strong hours into the dinner. The nose keeps evolving and added slight savoury note and fresh melon. This white seems to be one of those rare giants that can stand the course of a full dinner and can pair brilliantly with all dishes. (3153 views)
Tasted by la turque on 12/19/2014 & rated 97 points: What an incredible experience. Beautiful golden colour, with thick viscosity. On the nose, complex aromas of apricots, marzipan, varnish. On the palate, beautiful bitter-sweet bright fruit with layers of complexity, and beautiful balance. Drinking very well, will easily go 10 years. (3147 views)
Tasted by Uncle John on 3/18/2014 & rated 95 points: WOW! What a spectacular white wine. Golden color with such richness of fruit with a slightly sweet edge. This is contrasted by acidity and some slightly bitter flavors that give this wine such complexity and depth. It finishes with lovely smooth sweetness and goes on and on. (3131 views)
Tasted by FamilyLarsson on 11/27/2013 & rated 90 points: Ett djupt gyllene vin med svaga rödtoner.
Utifrån 2010:an blev vinet bara succesivt sämre ju äldre årgång vi provade.
(2947 views)

A FAMILY HISTORY
Land with 24 centuries of history behind it, worked and preserved by three generations of winemakers with family values at their core and a commitment to an illustrious terrain that produces prestigious wines. This, in a nutshell, is the Maison Guigal. Right from the beginning the motto, “No Pains No Gains” underpins the promise made to Etienne Guigal. A commitment to work together to follow in his footsteps, to communicate the family’s passion and create so many emotions. Today, Marcel and Philippe, along with their wives, are the guardians of this exceptional domain which combines history, devotion and a sense of togetherness. A breath of inspiration for generations to come.

CÔTE-RÔTIE
1
Planted on slopes by the Romans 24 centuries ago, this illustrious vineyard is made up of the Côte Brune, upstream of the Reynard and the Côte Blonde which is downstream. Planted almost exclusively with Syrah, the Côte Brune produces a powerful, intense wine. Thanks to a dash of Viognier which compliments the Syrah, the Côte Blonde is more subtle. There is a charming legend attached to this appellation and the Château d’Ampuis: “the sire of this place had two daughters, one with hair as dark as the night and the other blonde like a field of wheat. When they got married he endowed each with two of his best slopes. This is how we inherited the Côte Brune and the Côte Blonde”

CONDRIEU
2
With its steep terraces which plunge towards the Rhône, this vineyard is planted solely with Viognier. A rare grape varietal imported by the Greeks at the beginning of our era, combined with granite soils its naturally complex character produces a unique white wine with a yellow golden hue and intense and subtle notes of delicate apricot and white peach.

SAINT-JOSEPH
3
Enjoyed at the table of kings, this illustrious wine’s name hails back to the 16th Century and the Jesuit monks of Tournon. The reds are made from Syrah and the whites from Marsanne and Rousanne. These grape varieties grown on a South to South East facing steeply sloped vineyard with granite soils produce elegant, luscious wines.

HERMITAGE
4
A prestigious appellation since ancient times, it is named after a 13th Century hermit who sought redemption by devoting himself to prayer and the cultivation of vines. Enjoyed by the Russian Court and the great and the good of Europe, this rich and powerful wine with intense aromas is produced from Syrah for the reds and Marsanne and Roussanne for the whites.

CROZES-HERMITAGE
5
A typical wine of the northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage benefits from warm pebbly soils with good drainage. This is a vast appellation partially planted on slopes. The reds are produced from Syrah and the whites from Marsanne and Rousanne. The red wine is deep ruby in colour, full of savoury flavour and well-balanced. The white wines are dry and aromatic with floral notes.

CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE
6
These soils are composed of calcareous round pebbles and the vineyards are swept by the Mistral winds and warmed by the Provencal sunshine, resulting in wines with unmistakable flavours of the South. These southern wines are produced from a complex blend of the 13 grape varieties of the appellation with Grenache as the main component. They are complex with soft and powerful tannins and are characterised by a generous and strong personality.

White Rhone Blend

A white wine containing two or more Rhône varieties, including: Viognier, Marsanne, Roussanne, Clairette, Grenache Blanc and Bourboulenc.

Northern Rhône

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.

• The appellation stretches over 3 communes in the Drôme "département" : Tain-l'Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage and Larnage.

• The soils are a combination of granite with alluvial quaternary delta deposits, and, on the eastern side, Pliocene clay. This diversity explains the numerous different names given to vineyard plots within the appellation : Bessards, Greffieux, Méal, Roucoule, Beaumes, etc.

• The meso-climate provides shelter from the north winds, where the majority of the slopes is well exposed, facing south.

•The vineyards area adds up to 134 hectares/331 acres, with an annual production of 3,635 hectoliters. Authorized maximum yield is 40 hectoliters/hectare (2.3 US tons/acres).

• Grape varieties : Syrah (an addition of up to 15% of Marsanne or Roussanne is allowed).
