Tasted by talbot61 on 3/26/2024: Boston Wine & Poker, Brookline, NH: Tasted blind. No doubt this is port. On the sweet side. Lots of caramel. A suggestion of bubblegum. The alcohol is fully integrated -- there is no heat. Completely drinkable now. From Philip's cellar. (582 views)
Tasted by Harley1199 on 11/30/2023: Just a few drops. Tasted separately during a whole week. Always classic, a confort rich, solid and reliable stuff. Interesting aftertaste, not as much sweet as some are pretending.

Solo unas gotas. Catado por separado durante toda una semana. Siempre clásico, un confort rico, sólido y fiable. Un regusto interesante, no tan dulce como algunos pretenden. (1439 views)
Tasted by theportguy on 11/18/2023 & rated 94 points: FTLOP 18th Anniversary; 11/17/2023-11/19/2023 (Seattle, Washington): Classic older Taylor Vintage Port hue with a dark ruby center transitioning to pink edges. Initially subtle, I coaxed out notes of chocolate and subtle mint on the nose. The palate delivers a rich, intense, and complex flavor profile featuring chocolate, cinnamon, and baking spices, ending in a wonderful, long finish. (1045 views)
Tasted by Argrath on 9/2/2023 & rated 94 points: Spicy, mature nose. Red fruit and mineral. Flowers and airy. Very, very elegant, but perhaps a bit too tender.
Medium-fullish, mature palate. Spicy, elegant and balanced. Fresh and nutty. Long finish.
Ready to drink, and the elegant style would makes me think this will not benefit from further cellaring. (1407 views)
Tasted by theportguy on 8/11/2023 & rated 86 points: Guys' Port Weekend - Seattle; 8/11/2023-8/13/2023 (Seattle, Washington): Amber in color with slight pink hues on the edges. Red fruit compote and chocolate notes on the nose. The intense mouthfeel showcases Bing cherry and dark chocolate, though a slight bitterness on the finish detracts from the overall experience. Overall this wine feels slightly disjointed. Good components but they just don't come together in the right way. (984 views)
Tasted by theportguy on 1/21/2023 & rated 92 points: Guys Port Weekend - Las Vegas; 1/20/2023-1/21/2023 (Las Vegas, Nevada): There is just a touch of oxidation on the nose, along with cranberry, red currant, and some baking spices. The palate is a pleasant, complex mix of red fruits and dried herbs, but still retains a luscious quality it. While there is good acidity and balance at the beginning of the very long finish, the sweetness starts to fade slightly, resulting in a wine that feels a little drier in style. (2149 views)
Tasted by cweiss on 12/30/2022: Mildly but definitely corked. More potable to others than myself. (1800 views)
Tasted by talbot61 on 10/31/2022: Boston Wine + Poker BYOW, Lincoln, Mass: When the poker players started to think about eating the cookies that Kyle brought, their thoughts turned predictably to the consumption of wines that might appropriately accompany cookies. So we carried this one carefully up from the basement, decanted it, and drank it right away. An excellent accompaniment for cookies. Even without the long decant that I would usually insist upon, this was a treat -- vibrant and nutty, not at all syrupy, drinkable now but with an effectively infinite lifespan. (2327 views)
Tasted by the_curries on 7/30/2022: Beautiful port (2397 views)
Tasted by the_curries on 6/22/2022: Fig, raisin. Ready now. Wow. (2377 views)
Tasted by Ralph_ on 4/27/2022 flawed bottle: corked (2204 views)
Tasted by andtheodor on 3/22/2022 & rated 91 points: Surprisingly mature. Figgy, minty, peppery with caramel laced throughout. Pretty nice and has arrived with grace but isn't a transformative Taylor's. (2188 views)
Tasted by blanquito on 3/21/2022 & rated 92 points: Very, very nice. Still sports robust flavors of a younger port despite the garnet rim and silky texture of a mature port. Good fruit, balance, length, wonderfully poised, but perhaps a little too understated lacking that extra complexity and electricity that some old ports get. Maybe it gets there in another decade or two. Still, hard not love as is. 92-93 pts. (1900 views)
Tasted by stkilda on 12/26/2021 & rated 94 points: This 1983 Taylor’s Vintage Port is fully mature it has evolved gracefully with some significant bricking . The sweet fruit gives way to a complex cornucopia of secondary flavours . I clearly don’t drink enough port tending to only open a bottle during the festive season which is clearly a mistake on my part. I enjoyed this over two weeks and although the port diminished over that time it was still immensely enjoyable. (1818 views)
Tasted by WineGold on 12/25/2021 & rated 95 points: Drank beautifully on Christmas night dinner, after a four hour decant. This is ready to go — at a terrific drinking window, probably at its peak to my tastes. Five days later we finished the bottle with friends at a dinner we hosted, and it still drank exceptionally well. It’s dark but inviting, with all the layers and depth of a prime Taylor Porto. Will seek out more as these are readily available. (1782 views)
Tasted by Bruce L on 12/21/2021 & rated 91 points: Lighter than I might have expected from Taylor's but a lovely port nonetheless. (1370 views)
Tasted by Bandreas on 12/1/2021: Light and translucent red color, bordering on tawny; notes of fig, some alcoholic heat on the nose.
There is more heat on the palate but also quite a high intensity with some burning sensation; quite intense.. This gives way to a smooth, sweet finish.
Overall the impression of the wine is light; it would seem to be more of an old tawny than a vintage port; Has seemingly not changed very much since I broached the first of 3 bottles bought about 23 years ago... (1493 views)
Tasted by Duncan H on 11/23/2021 & rated 87 points: A bit subdued and far less weighty than expected. Very light red in colour. Lacked oomph, but was still pleasant. Perhaps past its peak, tho the cork looked damaged so the bottle could have been spoiled. (1508 views)
Tasted by VVegas on 8/20/2021: Amazing (1673 views)
Tasted by Jay Hack on 7/10/2021 & rated 91 points: They were clamoring for a dessert wine, so I went down to the cellar, couldn't reach the 1951 Rivesaltas, and grabbed this. Cork came out easily with the Durand, then decanted through cheesecloth (the Roy Hersh method) into a Captain's wide bottom decanter and then tasted immediately. The color was mostly red with a slightly tawny hue, but relatively light in overall color. Translucent more than inky. For reasons that I do not know, the 1983 Taylor is much maligned, which I do not think is deserved. This wine was "correct" in all respects. The palate was soft and smooth, primarily caramel and nuts (roasted cashews), with some red fruit and reasonable balancing acidity so it was not syrupy sweet. Not as intense as other VPs from nearby better years (1977 or 1970) but still excellent and if you are on the fence on port because you think it's too sweet an syrupy, this is a vintage port for you. The only thing this wine suffered from is the competition, wh8ich was all outstanding, but it was a perfect finishing wine - not over the top and not overly sweet. (2008 views)
Tasted by Thoughtful on 2/3/2021 & rated 94 points: Stored in a cold cellar since release. Perfect cork. Classic port nose.
Great balance with lovely fruit and acidity. Kilvert's Diary always comes to mind when the vicar and squire drank the legendary 1847! Many years in hand and should age gracefully. (2558 views)
Tasted by Duncan H on 1/10/2021 & rated 95 points: Simply awesome!

Complex and powerful - beautifully rounded on the palate with some gorgeous rosehip. An absolute pleasure to drink. I'm sure this has many years of life still ahead! (2138 views)
Tasted by beachbum on 12/25/2020: I drank this over a few days, good cherry going into smooth long finish. Nice. (2020 views)
Tasted by rupertg on 12/25/2020 & rated 91 points: Pale red, brick rim, translucent. Cherry and spirit on the nose, smooth and sweet in the mouth, fig and plums and spice. Delicate and delicious. Not affected by time in decanter. Long, with a sweet finish and balanced fire. Drink up. (1760 views)
Tasted by NWitham on 12/25/2020: Big intense nose, super smooth mouthfeel with intense fruit but perfectly integrated tannins. Long finish. Just great! (1596 views)

Taylor (Fladgate)

Producer Website

Taylor's vintage ports are renowned for their massive structure, concentration of flavour and distinctively masculine style. Taylor's Port is also renowned for being amongst the longest lived of all ports.

Robert Parker: "This house must certainly be the Latour of Portugal. Their ports are remarkably backward yet still impressive when young. Of all the vintage ports, those of Taylor need the longest time to mature and even when fully mature seem to have an inner strength and firmness that keep them going for decades."

Port Blend

Over a hundred varieties of grapes (castas) are sanctioned for port production, although only five (Tinta Barroca, Tinto Cão, Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo), Touriga Francesa, and Touriga Nacional) are widely cultivated and used.
