Community Tasting Notes (average 91.1 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 310 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Winokdub on 11/3/2023 & rated 92 points: Really good still but starting to fade. Still has several good years ahead though (563 views)
Tasted by DesMarteau on 9/15/2023 & rated 94 points: Consistent with my last note…funny i didn’t think this could age: It can go long under proper conditions . The cork was crap and I initially thought the bottle was corrupt …but the wet cardboard essence blew off … (732 views)
Tasted by La Cave d'Argent on 4/3/2023 & rated 93 points: Serially sampled over three hours from a pristinely cellared bottle that was decanted off of its sediment, this Cabernet remains deep-to-opaque red/garnet in color and serves up an intense package of black currants, dark bramble fruits, graphite, violets, tobacco and vanilla. Full-bodied, fresh and without alcoholic heat (14.2%), the oak has now fully integrated, as have the tannins. Round, dense, delicious on the mid-palate and lengthy back end, it has fleshed out beautifully. This is a Cabernet that has dramatically defied the pundits' longevity predictions and has even defied my own previous predictions. Comparably cellared bottles still have enough fruit and structure to reach their twenty-fifth birthday with grace. Decantation off of the sediment is necessary at this point, but it will fully strut its stuff within an hour thereafter. Drink now-2026. (1115 views)
Tasted by Winokdub on 1/13/2022 & rated 93 points: Was able to better appreciate the wine last night and was very impressed. Perfect cork. Pours fairly dark with minimal bricking. Very expressive nose. Nice soft fruit. Medium body. Moderate complexities of mature cabernet and silky smooth. Moderately long finish. Should hold here for another year or so but no need to wait. Yummy! (1656 views)
Tasted by Winokdub on 1/12/2022 & rated 92 points: I drank at Christmas and remember being impressed. Will take better notes next bottle. (1571 views)
Tasted by Tim336 on 7/15/2021 & rated 94 points: Holding up amazingly well for a 20+ year old Napa - possibly even better than the Reserve of the same year, or I just got lucky with this bottle. Smooth, rich, lush and sweet, lots of cassis and a bit of old leather. Superb. (1579 views)
Tasted by DesMarteau on 3/28/2021 & rated 94 points: Wow...fabulous...hit its stride at age 20! Still dark..very slight bricking on the edge...let sit 30 mins. Integrated, melted blueberry cherry plum....leather....seamless. (1703 views)
Tasted by MrMoose on 1/3/2021 & rated 88 points: very mildly corked , but still nicely balanced w/ripe red fruits and med finish (1632 views)
Tasted by MrMoose on 1/3/2021 flawed bottle: corked (1043 views)
Tasted by TomTom on 4/10/2020 & rated 90 points: Very expressive nose on opening. Dark garnet color does not show much age. A fairly simple wine that lacks distinctive tertiary flavors, but showing nice plum and cherry fruit on the palate. Would not have guessed this is a 19 year old wine. Bought on auction for a reasonable price and probably did better than I expected. (1566 views)
Tasted by RockyII on 3/24/2019 & rated 92 points: 30 minute decant for this 2001 purchased on auction. Fair amount of crystallized sediment near the neck of the bottle indicates proper long term storage. Deep opaque garnet. Surprisingly big nose of blackberries, cedar and creme brûlée. Flavors are similar with a little dry rock, ash and cocoa. Medium to low tannins and medium plus acidity. Still has good life in it. About 91-92. (2093 views)
Tasted by Mark1npt on 4/7/2017 & rated 94 points: My 2nd and last bottle.....my 1st review still stands but it's even better with air now. Classic Cali cab nose, even after 16 years. The initial very slight raisining upon opening disappears with an hour of air. Black currants dominate, the mouthfeel is plush moderate to max weight with enough tannin to make you dream of Napa all night long. Parker says 2017 is it which is why I drank this tonight.....on opening with the early raisining I would have said he was right, but with air, this stuff can go another few years easy. Still a powerful back end with plenty of fruit. If you have any left, you are very lucky......this was the wine that turned me on to Whitehall Lane to begin with. (4749 views)
Tasted by Hamersly on 12/21/2016 & rated 90 points: An excellent wine but a far cry from the superb 2001 Reserve. A bit sharp upon opening, but mellows nicely after an hour or so of air. Well balanced with red and black fruits, medium body and a long finish. Delicate for a Napa Cab from a strong vintage. Thinner and more acid on Day 2, so drink up. (4389 views)
Tasted by navybrat on 5/14/2016 & rated 93 points: Who knew back in 04 that this little beauty would turn into a classic American claret! (5586 views)
Tasted by buckeye76 on 4/29/2016 & rated 91 points: RED BROWN ON THE EDGE. BLACK CHERRIES AND COFFEE IN THE NOSE. BLACK CHERRIES, BLACKBERRIES, PLUMS, AND LICORICE IN THE FLAVOR. MEDIUM LENGTH FINISH. (4043 views)
Tasted by La Cave d'Argent on 4/18/2016 & rated 92 points: From a pristinely cellared bottle, this deep-to-opaque red/garnet wine serves up aromas and flavors of ripe black currants, minerals, violets, tobacco and creamy oak. Full-bodied, fresh, seamlessly alcoholic and with silky-textured tannins, it is fleshy yet has no sharp edges. Impressively dense on the mid-palate and finishing long, this is a Cabernet that has defied the pundits' longevity predictions. Drink now-2022. (5142 views)
Tasted by MrMoose on 3/21/2016 & rated 91 points: lush and well integrated fruit, rich texture and smooth finish (2602 views)
Tasted by Thomas B on 3/20/2016 & rated 90 points: Blueberry, plum and blackberry, still some slight tannin but well integrated. Still a delicious wine and no reason to rush, this still has life to it. I just wish I had more. (2217 views)
Tasted by Mark1npt on 2/5/2016 & rated 92 points: Nothing special chilled on opening. Tight, high pitched right on opening. Inky dark. Let it have 30-60 min of air and time to warm to room temp (75 deg here in FL), and it blossoms. Full, rich, almost decadent. Still lots of fruit, good tannin structure, edges smooth. Maybe not as multi layered or complex as some cabs can be but none at this price point($40) from 15 years ago can match it. Drinks like an $120 bottle today. Sorry I only have 1 left. (2471 views)
Tasted by RR47 on 11/4/2015 & rated 92 points: Wine of the night. Cellared correctly since release. Good aged cab, some bricking, nose of blackberry, subtle cigar, and light oak. Good mid, with soft tannins on the finish. (1051 views)
Tasted by oldwines on 10/13/2015 & rated 90 points: Fruit forward yet bright and mostly pleasing bottle of wine. The wine is rich and powerful with a large oak influence. The oak was pleasant but verged on over the top to my liking. The color was inky purple. The wine was dense and full bodied, nothing subtle here. Boysenberry jam, ripe black plum and smoked meat dominated the flavor profile along with vanilla from the oak. For me this overpowers most foods and begs for something spicy and mouth coating to eat with it. (1870 views)
Tasted by gejohnston on 7/11/2015 & rated 92 points: Amazing as always. This is the wine that made me like wine 4 years ago. (1939 views)
Tasted by walkerjfw on 4/4/2015 & rated 91 points: Pre Easter. Last bottle from this lot. Consistent with prior notes -

"Medium ruby color, mild bricking at the edges. Dark cherry, plums, chocolate, sweet oak, cedar...sweetness on the mid palate...Medium to long finish."

Great example of a mid/low priced cab from the terrific 01 vintage - wine in a good place right now. Would drink over next few years (2307 views)
Tasted by walkerjfw on 3/27/2015 & rated 92 points: At home with pizza, hanging out with Val and Krista. Drank after a Kistler Vine Hill Chard (09)

Splash decanted, drank over 3 hours. Medium ruby color, mild bricking at the edges. Dark cherry, plums, chocolate, sweet oak, cedar. Consistent with prior notes, there is a sweetness on the back mid palate from the tannins. Medium to long finish.

Better than last bottle, benefited from the air. Aged nicely, right in its zone (2331 views)
Tasted by gejohnston on 12/25/2014 & rated 92 points: Outstanding... This was perfectly balanced and a delight to drink. (2399 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
