| Community Tasting Notes (average 93.8 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 90 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by Burgundy Al on 3/2/2024 & rated 93 points: La Paulée de Los Angeles Gala Dinner (The Fairmont - Santa Monica CA): Small glass. And now for something completely different. Still fresh enough, amazingly big and complex combination of fruit, spice, toasted brioche, and so much more. (486 views) | | Tasted by MC2 Wines on 11/30/2023: Piemonte: Truffles instead of Turkey; 11/23/2023-12/2/2023 (Barolo, Barbaresco, Alto Piemonte and of course Alba): The cork was really stuck in there and so I was very much hoping that we would get a pop but alas ‘twas not to be. There are some bubbles here and if you like old champagne (we do) then you would very much have enjoyed this wine. It was more the memory of bubbles. A bit oxidized but also kind of round and slightly caramely. Tasty. (972 views) | | Tasted by burg_gram_Jason on 11/13/2023 & rated 96 points: Beautiful transparency looking thru backlit, the pour revealed still vibrant mousse and golden brown hue in the glass. Well-aged DP aromas of anjou pear tart, butter scotch and lime, but the palate was where it stood above other 60s and 70s DPs i've cherished in the past. Aged DP sometimes shows a textural element that I find less than seamless (in contrast to well-aged Cris & Krug) but this bottle showed a gorgeously silken palate of sweetness, uplifted by a fresh acidity. (717 views) | | Tasted by MC2 Wines on 4/27/2023: Bienvenue a Champagne; 4/20/2023-4/29/2023 (Les Crayeres, various restaurants, Les Avises and a many wonderful producers): This was just straight up rocking and didn’t stop. Still had some bubbles. Good evolution. Drinking really nicely and kept getting better in the glass. Stunning. A perfect way to end the afternoon drinking on the porch as Les Avises with some friends on the last afternoon of our trip. (2659 views) | | Tasted by hajoha on 2/20/2023 & rated 94 points: Dom Perignon 1973. Nydelig ren nese. Er så rått med moden DP. 94p (2178 views) | | Tasted by fcxj on 2/10/2023 & rated 90 points: Still holding together, but bready style I wouldn't chase. (2170 views) | | Tasted by Le Monty on 2/2/2023: This was a late disgorgement bottle ('99) that I took to Z's 50th party. This did not have the fizz that another original disgorgement of '73 at the party had, but the palate was similar, toast, butterscotch and caramel with good acidity. (1789 views) | | Tasted by MC2 Wines on 1/21/2023: The 50 Big Bash (Harry's NYC): This was exceptional. Very vibrant and bright and drinking great. Caramel and slightly nutty and those old champagne notes but lots of life to it as well. Both bottles were similar. Very enjoyable to try. (2220 views) | | Tasted by godx on 11/20/2022 & rated 94 points: Tasted Blind. Mature nose that's very complex. Truffle, organ fruit, salted caramel. Palate has energy, acid and effervescence. Lots of roasted citrus notes on the palate. Guessed early 80s or late 70s. This bottle was in really great condition. (224 views) | | Tasted by The Vines That Bind on 11/11/2022 & rated 94 points: [Blind] Great molasses and orange zest off the pop. Mature but has real freshness. Spritz and effervescence. Good acid. Crushed rock and boulder mineral. Complex. Dense and powerful. Great orange fruit. Vanilla bean. Fall spice. A perfect bottle. Original release. (1553 views) | | Tasted by MC2 Wines on 9/14/2022: In contrast to the '85 we had right before it I doubt this was stored quite as well. It's that old, definitely oxidized style of champagne. Drinkable and even enjoyable but not as good as it could be or as I was hoping for it to be (I remember really loving the 70's Doms from a dinner a few years ago) and so I was disappointed with its showing. (1733 views) | | Tasted by Collector1855 on 7/2/2021 & rated 97 points: Tasted blind. Amber color, very dark for a Champagne, showing age. Nose of candied sugar, really nice, not oxidative, sandal wood, dried fruits, Rich palate, very impressive example of an aged Champagne. The MW who attended the tasting said that in this time the dosage was typically higher, more like 10-15g which brings out these caramelized notes today. Wonderful. (4591 views) | | Tasted by jhngo on 6/10/2021 & rated 96 points: amazingly alive intact bubbles. has more pronounce toffee toasty notes. (3110 views) | | Tasted by TWMDoesWine on 4/3/2021 & rated 89 points: Definitely past it's prime, but quite interesting and delightful. Deep amber color and drinking purely in the I am a Sherry category. Oxidized but retaining some sweet floral notes. We downed the bottle rather quickly, which I think is a testemant to how well made these were. Despite clearly not being there fully, it had the faintest effervescence and had the experience to give us a quality performance. (3436 views) | | Tasted by sdr on 1/7/2020 & rated 88 points: DP, DPR, DPO, DPP2 (Ft. Lauderdale, Florida): The least successful vintage of the vertical even granting dispensation for old age. There are definite sherry notes which some tasters might appreciate more than me. It’s not dead though and a small sip expands your perception of very aged champagne. (6237 views) | | Tasted by MC2 Wines on 12/12/2019: Acker's 1970's Holiday Champagne Dinner (Atera - 77 Worth Street in NYC): Very fresh, touch of apple, bit of green grass, drinking quite nicely and seems like it will continue to be strong moving forward. (5715 views) | | Tasted by NoTrollingerPlease on 11/9/2019 & rated 94 points: Best bottle (Restaurant Holz und Feuer, Kirchheim, Germany): Glass: Gabriel Standard Clear, amber color. Clean nose, with interesting and clear toffee notes. Sweet. On the palate fine Mousseux, lovely autolytic notes, roasted nuts, clear mature notes. Very elegant and balanced with a good length. Certainly, past peak, but still very joyful to drink. 93-94 (4563 views) | | Tasted by Aravind Asok on 1/5/2019: New Year's Champagne Madness (Casa Gill): Oxidized, and completely flat on the palate, but still interesting notes of caramelized sugar and lemon. (6004 views) | | Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 9/22/2018 & rated 94 points: My (second) 50th birthday lunch (Restaurant The Beehive, White Waltham, UK): Recently acquired at auction. From a cold and damp cellar apparently. Remains of label only, vintage identified from the cork. Level 1.5 cm below the foil. Different from the bottle from the same lot tasted yesterday, but probably in even better shape. Very healthy bubble, pale golden colour, evolved and mature but completely fresh, elegant and seamless, harmonious, lightly honeyed, smoky, lovely flavours, excellent length. Quite stunning. (6629 views) | | Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 9/21/2018 & rated 93 points: My 50th birthday lunch (Restaurant The Fat Duck ***, Bray-on-Thames, UK): Recently acquired at auction. From a cold and damp cellar apparently. Illegible label, vintage identified from the cork. Level 1.5 cm below the foil. Pale golden colour; the nose is slightly maderised initially, but it opens up nicely to fresher, floral and citrussy notes in the large Chardonnay glasses; the palate is sensationally fresh and vibrant for age, with that interplay between juicy citrus and brioche which is so typical for Dom Pérignon, only a little nutty evolution, a hint of honey, and a gentle prickle; clean and long finish. A wonderful surprise, excellent presence on the palate, really much better than I had anticipated. (4281 views) | | Tasted by tinybubbles on 8/10/2018 & rated 91 points: A good amount of oxidation here, but appealing weight. Significant light soil component to the palate. (3673 views) | | Tasted by tinybubbles on 8/10/2018 & rated 92 points: An advancing bottle, but with a rich and deep palate and still reasonable balance. 92-93 (3985 views) | | Tasted by tinybubbles on 7/20/2018 & rated 93 points: Rich intact fruits, modest acid streak, but great depth. Nice bottle. 93-94 (2820 views) | | Tasted by BradE on 10/5/2017: Trios of Dom Perignon: A good bottle, but not great as it can be. (5633 views) | | Tasted by PSPatrick on 7/23/2017 & rated 94 points: BBQ at Elmar’s place. This champagne was light to medium amber in colour, with light, persistent perlage. It offered bruised apple, nuts, brioche, warm bread crust and light smoke on the nose, and bruised apple, dried stone fruits, effervescent powder, nuts, brioche, warm bread crust and light smoke on the palate, with fine, creamy mousse, a good, creamy mouthfeel and incredible length. This medium- to full-bodied, balanced and fresh champagne had a very similar profile as a Dom Perignon 1970 we had from magnum a couple of weeks ago, but was fuller and fresher than the 1970. I am always amazed by how well these champagnes age. Lovely stuff. Thank you, Elmar! (6312 views) | | Only displaying the 25 most recent notes - click to see all notes for this wine... |

France - When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of consistent quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them. Click for a list of bestselling items from all of France. Sub-Region:
Champagne - The French region of Champagne (including the cities of Rheims, Épernay, and Aÿ) was the first region in the world to make sparkling wine in any quantity. Today, the name of the region is synonymous with the finest of all sparkling wines, and wine-making traditions of Champagne have become role models for sparkling wine producers, worldwide. Surprisingly, the region of Champagne is now responsible for only one bottle in 12 of all sparkling wine produced. Styles of champagne range in sweetness ranging from an extra brut or brut 0, to the basic brut to demi sec to doux; some houses produce single vintage champagnes and others produce non-vintage (or incorporate wines/grapes of multiple vintages), often to preserve a specific taste; combinations of grape varietals; and colors, including a rosé. There are several sub-appellations, including the Valley of the Marnes river running from Épernay west, Massif de Saint-Thierry north and west of Rheims, Valley of the Ardre, the Mountains of Rheims (between Rheims and Épernay), Côte des Blancs, Côte de Sézanne, and Côte des Bar in the South. Champagne wine only uses three grape varietals (cépages): Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier.ChampagneThe vineyards of Champagne on weinlagen-info |
