Amazingly pure, fresh apricot and pear without botrytis. Rich, almost dry, no signs of oxidation. This is in amazing shape at age 47. (Joe's.): I'm kicking myself for not focusing on the wine more than I did and actually writing things down. I thought I'd had this before, but, in fact, this was my first go with the wine, I'd previously had the '70 Moelleux. That said, it shares some of that wines characteristics, albeit it in a less sweet form. It's a dark gold color with a profile that's of dried fruits, baked spiced apples, earl grey tea and toasted nuts. There's a bit of oxidation and almost a heaviness to the wine and I just get a real sense of decay. Still some sweetness present and while the balance is fine, one does get a sense of plumpness here. Fully mature, if not a bit past peak, but the wine should hold for awhile. B+. (4041 views) | | Tasted by JeffGMorris on 3/13/2008 & rated 94 points: Dinner at Tristan, Charleston, SC. Recorked at the winery in the past 5 years and purchased onsite about 1 year ago. Decanted at the start of dinner and drunk with a great 5 course meal over the following 3+ hours. 1970 is not a well known vintage in Vouvray and Demi-Sec of this age and vintage has no right to still be drinking well, or at all...unless it is from the amazing cellar of Domaine Huet. Purchased at the winery at the urging of the young woman Noel left us with for the purchases at the end of our visit. "This is one of my favorites" she said. This in a room full of vintages spanning almost 60 years certainly made us take notice. Why not take a chance and give a little of our valuable storage space on the plane to this recommended bottle? Good thing we did as this was outstanding. Light to medium gold in the glass, the time in the decanter served this well as it started off as a very good wine that continued to open and get better over the evening. Wax and lanolin and a mild sweetness. Acidity that is clearly of the lime variety. Very delicate and refined wine with a long finish. As crazy as this sounds, this wine may still have further positive development ahead of it. Whether that's the case or not it is certainly a special bottle to drink now and one that will continue to drink well for another 20+ years. 50+13+13+9+9 = 94 (3261 views) |
