Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 89.4 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 46 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Italiana on 2/6/2019: This bottle dark gold. Interesting nose, but flabby presentation. A bit too oxidized for my taste, although tolerably drinkable. Too bad this bottle got away from me in the cellar. (1578 views)
Tasted by jasonh on 12/25/2013: A simple note on a Christmas starter. This is coming along nicely. Aromatics are very lively. Nice white fruits and some grass notes but no one thing sticking out above the other. On the palate I would say tasty, balanced, nice texture and maybe a bit of sweetness. Really easy to drink on its own but matches of with food perfectly. (5680 views)
Tasted by winot on 5/6/2013 & rated 91 points: A surprising level of complexity given the price - medium yellow - very unique nose - oak, mineral, really savoury, complex, but not green - saline - same on palate - like salted Caesar rim with celery (!!) - but then a mellow citrus finish, featuring well-judged oak - this would be awesome with a roast stuffed chicken!! Very nice. (5965 views)
Tasted by paulst on 4/9/2013 & rated 89 points: Nice texture; slightly sweet with crusty lemon-apricot. (6079 views)
Tasted by LelouchViBritannia on 11/2/2011 & rated 92 points: continue to evolve in the glass but going down hill by the 3rd hour. Initially Grassy, but very rich, and complex. (forgot the details) Drink over the next 3 years. (7886 views)
Tasted by jaybird7 on 10/13/2011 & rated 90 points: Drank 1 bottle sometime in 2009-2011 and liked it but don't have notes. I kept the bottle to remind me that I liked it. (7251 views)
Tasted by Wink on 8/17/2011 & rated 88 points: My Feb 4, 2011 review is still valid. Light gold. Nose of grapefruit and grass. Light, fresh palate of grapefruit, gooseberry, and a hint of honey. Decent length. Food-friendly acidity. This is a decent wine that has been better in other vintages. (4176 views)
Tasted by paulst on 7/29/2011 & rated 90 points: Astringent earthy and textured; some pineapple and sweet apple balanced with round apricot. (3574 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 6/28/2011 & rated 90 points: Light gold to borderline medium gold color. Nose is predominantly citrus, some gooseberry fruit, and sutle peach, with with hints of grass and minerals and hust a bit of petrol. The palate hits with a tart citrus with significant grapefruit, mineral, fairly good viscosity , plenty of acid and the finish is medium plus. This wine has plenty of character, nice nose, body, and finish. I wish the palate displayed a little more diversity of fruit, less of the grapefruit, and this would have kicked up a point or two. (3729 views)
Tasted by paulst on 5/12/2011 & rated 92 points: Textured and rich body; deep lemony apricot; flowery; long finish. (3231 views)
Tasted by Wink on 2/4/2011 & rated 88 points: Light gold with slight greenish tint. Nose of citrus, honey and grass. Light palate of tart grapefruit with a little pineapple and lots of minerals. Tart acidity. Decent length. Very good, food-friendly wine. (3468 views)
Tasted by JimVarney01 on 1/17/2011 & rated 90 points: This wine lacks focus, but it makes up for it in complexity and character. Peach and honey go well with a good deal of minerality and wet rock on the nose. Very fruity, mimicing sweetness on the front end, transitioning to a medium-full body that has pretty biting acidity. A very impressive wine at a fair tariff. (3729 views)
Tasted by iByron on 11/14/2010 & rated 90 points: Color is a pale gold; nothing spectacular, but obviously a young white wine. The nose, on the other hand, is big and bosomy with sweet pear and honeyed lemorange, and SB grass trending more toward fresh hay than cultured grass. Clear echoes of those Sauternes barrels fills it out. On the mouth-filling (especially after time) palate is weedy pear on opening, fleshing out to green and yellow tropical fruits and honeysuckle with time and air. The acidity is firm but not razor sharp (thank you, Old World techniques!). Decant this and you'll be rewarded. Hold it for a few years and you'll be rewarded further. Enjoy with food as it was intended. A comfortable 90. (4389 views)
Tasted by paulst on 10/24/2010 & rated 90 points: Initially tart; later smoother with flower petals and round lemon curd. (3889 views)
Tasted by paulst on 10/24/2010 & rated 90 points: Smooth and a bit creamy with some lemon curd. (3880 views)
Tasted by paulst on 9/19/2010 & rated 92 points: Straw with clay nose; lemon, herbaceous; complex and layered with some nice acidity and balance. (4069 views)
Tasted by Old_Winyards on 6/10/2010: This worked quite well with a meal. Nice fresh white fruit and mineral flavors, crisp bright acidity. (4710 views)
Tasted by benlisch on 5/22/2010 & rated 90 points: Lovely wax, gooseberry and cat pee aromas. Very vibrant gooseberry fruit with a touch of wax and some grapefruit on the lively finish. (4408 views)
Tasted by dre on 2/25/2010 & rated 90 points: Clear, bright golden core with a beautiful lime tinge that extends all the way to the edge of the glass. Wine looks youthful and vibrant.
The nose is stunning, fresh cut grass, lemon zest, huge slate notes, and honeydew. So vibrant, you can smell the acidity in the glass and it makes your mouth water.
The palate is dry.Very sharp acidity is well balanced by delicate lean white fruits, lemon and pear skin. This has a lovely moderate body that builds as the wine finishes. White fruits explode into Arancia oranges, papaya and tangerine while the minerality mops it all up and carries it on for days.
Fantastic food wine, drinking wonderfully now with a minimum 1/2 hour decant. Best to hold and drink 2012 - 2018.
Outstanding Quality, 90 + pts. (5195 views)
Tasted by Tad GW on 1/26/2010 & rated 89 points: 50+5+11+16+7=89 (4816 views)
Tasted by Mr T on 12/16/2009: Fantastic nose with tropical fruit and some grapefruit.....nice crasp palate...worked well as an aperitif and with dinner (5017 views)
Tasted by rexmerlot on 11/19/2009 & rated 89 points: Crisp tropical fruit and stone fruit on the nose and palate. Had with a ham dinner. Nice pairing. (5161 views)
Tasted by Mattshank on 11/8/2009 & rated 89 points: Nose: Grapefruit and kitty litter box aromas. Palate: Good acidity up front with the grapefruit and some melon on the finish. Decent Bordeaux Blanc. (5194 views)
Tasted by gzim on 9/5/2009 & rated 84 points: Light tropical fruits and white peaches, with some fresh acidity to add balance, but to me, this bottle was nothing special. (5368 views)
Tasted by gripNsip on 7/28/2009 & rated 88 points: Absolutely perfect summer wine! Grapefruit, creme soda, light tropical fruits. Nice strong acidity, very bright, well rounded overall with a good intensity. Great wine for the price. (5452 views)

(Guiraud G Blanc) G Dear Friends, This wine is flat-out terrific - you will be hard pressed to find a better white Bordeaux for this price. It is a testament to how terrific 2007 is for white wine (again) and the 2007 dry white wine in Bordeaux could be among the finest ever made. Did I say the vintage is good? Forgettable for the red wine, 2007 was completely the opposite for the white wine (and Sauternes) with many under the impression that the 2007 sweet wines will indeed be better than the 2001s (get your Yquem futures now). For the dry white Bordeaux, you may have to go back to 1989 to find a rival but the 2007s have even more acidity than the 1989s (with less gras) which should make them sing at an earlier age but still last for years. This is what white Bordeaux is all about and it only comes around a few times per decade (if that). Chateau Guiraud makes this beautiful white wine from the used barrels of their top Sauternes, sourced from a vineyard that was planted to Sauvignon Blanc by accident 35-40 years ago. For the Sauternes, they wanted a Semillon-heavy cuvee but they found themselves with a preponderance of Sauvignon Blanc, which is not the right balance for the sweet wine. Instead of selling off the grapes or re-planting they decided to make a special dry white from the extra Sauvignon each vintage and the "G" was born (this was back in the mid 1980s). Since then (and especially over the past 5-6 vintages) It has become widely recognized in Bordeaux and around the world as one of the benchmark white Bordeaux under $20. While not technically a white Graves, it may as well be. From mostly Sauvignon Blanc (70-80%) and the remainder Semillon, the "G" has been a big favorite for the last several years among our customer base and the 2007 will ring your ears with taut, pure, stony, complex fruit and a serious acid/extract balance that takes it to the next level. This wine is for fans of piquant Sancerre, Vouvray and even the better site-specific New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs but the "G" still sings of the special Bordelaise terroir it hails from and it is less of an investment than most of the above. With a personality that blends varietal tone with a fresh and chiseled cut (and plenty of amplitude) - it is what many of us look for but rarely come across in white Bordeaux, especially not for this price. This wine pulls it off with ease - it is the perfect late summertime treat that will cleanse your evening meal and be just as grand come Thanksgiving and Christmas. I'm buying a case (unless we sell out - I'll give most of the case back so more of you can receive an allocation). HIGHLY RECOMMENDED as a look into the 2007 vintage with a bargain wine full of energy and verve: This parcel has perfect provenance: 2007 Chateau Guiraud "G" Bordeaux Blanc (sec) Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Bord6890

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman
