Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.6 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 51 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by mxpbuy on 6/27/2021 & rated 91 points: From Magnum. Lots of fine silt sediment coating bottle and in the glass as unstrainable. 30 minutes of air in the glass was all that was needed. Plenty of overripe black and blue fruits, with modest acidity, some Oak and black currant. Smooth (1556 views)
Tasted by Peech on 5/30/2021 & rated 89 points: initially a little lean on the palate, 30 minutes later there was a little more body, got better and more smoky, but still not as rich and lush as expected, just lacking the sweet vanilla. After 75 minutes some ripeness showed up. (1040 views)
Tasted by Peech on 12/5/2020 & rated 94 points: decanted 1 hour prior to serving. Lots of coconut butter, woodsy notes, smoke, minty, really ripe and sweet on the nose, almost like super ripe honeydew melon. Tannins still going strong here. (1050 views)
Tasted by Peech on 11/19/2020 & rated 92 points: served 45 minutes after decanting. Nice and fragrant, a little minty, cool, with woodsy notes. Tannins are still here. (1046 views)
Tasted by Sanlucar on 8/14/2020 & rated 90 points: Fading fruit (ripe plums, blueberries & strawberries) with potent acids and dusty tannin. Plus, black pepper and other spices. Muted nose, some depth, and a short finish. Recommend decanting for at least 3 hours. This is still a worthy wine; use it to impress your wino friends but concede that it is now just a relic.  Tasted by srh on 8/31/2019: Winebar [1 Rosé, 3 Whts, & 8 Reds] from 08/30/19 + 5 Shared Reds (Vintage Wines Ltd., San Diego, CA): Dr. Tom, THANK you for your *most* GENEROUS sharing of this! :)

“A Napa original from the Hudson Vyds,” this vintage is supposedly 70% Merlot & 30% Syrah aged in 100% new FR oak. “The pick dates of our Merlot & Syrah were close enough for us to co-ferment most of this wine, adding an extra degree of harmony & complexity. 550 cases produced.”

N: An ATTRACTIVE melding of forest floor, berries, vanilla, poss pyrazines -- & other unparsables.

P: LM body; RNDISH entry with very NICE, ALMOST swtish frt beautifully counterbalanced by an acidity which evolves into a LONG, BALANCED finish with a very, VERY slight bitterness & a tangy/SWTNESS to the FEW remaining, dusty tannins. For now & SHOULD make its 20th. P not quite up to the N, but VERY nice nonetheless! 14.1% ABV; My EXC/EXC+. 95 & 94 pts RJonWine, 95 WA, 93 Tanzer, and 89 Jeff Leve. [As of early Sept '19, wine-searcher still shows 3 sources from $69-$142]. (1834 views)
Tasted by mxpbuy on 8/25/2019 & rated 88 points: A bit of a plummy hot mess. Some redeeming qualities, but at this point in its development it is really not my kind of wine. It was so much a better wine a decade ago. (1561 views)
Tasted by dfcrutcher on 9/11/2017 & rated 90 points: Closed and tart out of the bottle, but settled down nicely after an hour in the decanter. Not profound, but good. Lots of tobacco and earthy notes; fading fruit. Drink now. (3240 views)
Tasted by tbushnell on 5/7/2017: Well past its prime (3237 views)
Tasted by dannagle on 4/21/2017 & rated 95 points: The color is still deep red. Nose and palate of dark fruit. Still lots of alcohol. No harsh tannins. All in all - smooth on the palate, but lots of fruit and elegance left. We have a few more bottles - they will probably go a few more years. (3219 views)
Tasted by buckeye76 on 3/25/2017 & rated 93 points: Lots of black fruits in the nose with raspberries, currants. leather, chocolate, and a touch of floral. Black cherries, black raspberries, and licorice in the flavor. Well balanced wine with nice complexity and a long finish. (2812 views)
Tasted by Mr T on 11/9/2015: PNP into decanter and then shared with friends. This was fresh, balanced and still good fruit that pleased new world fans and the old....didn't get a lot and didn't get to spend much time. Honestly, hit me as a bit over the top, but late in the night (3829 views)
Tasted by cns on 3/23/2015 & rated 91 points: Still fresh, lively and good fruit. Tannins are still pronounced and this needs 2+ hours of air before drinking. (3185 views)
Tasted by EricLi on 7/27/2014 & rated 88 points: Brick on the edge. Strong plum aroma right off, turning into alcohol, and chocolate and dark fruit after 1 hour of decanting. Only alcohol and tannins to start, but it gradually integrate and shows some chocolate flavor, remain tannic though. (3531 views)
Tasted by EricLi on 3/20/2013 & rated 88 points: On nose, it smells cherry and oak. On palate, very tannic with a hint of sweetness. It needs time to open up to show more nuances. 1-2 hours decanting definitely helps. On day 2, the tannins turns into quite a nice dark chocolate note. (4506 views)
Tasted by StefanAkiko on 3/1/2013 & rated 92 points: Started out with some unpleasant medicinal aromas. Evolved in to dark berries jam and smoked ham. Very attractive nose even if it's non-integrated. In the mouth, this is a big (not huge) wine. M++ body, M+ tannin and exaggerated acids that did well with the vinegar dressing but not the other courses. Unusual for me, this red wine's bouquet attracted my attention more than tha palate did. 2001 impressed much more.
Decanted 2 hrs. Had at Restaurant Tani (Gaienmae, Tokyo) wife girigiri 90 p. (4691 views)
Tasted by Purejuice on 2/3/2013 & rated 93 points: Nose seemed of-putting, medicinal but flavors meld well, good fruit (3629 views)
Tasted by Blcmdpa@gmail.com on 11/22/2011 & rated 90 points: I know I am going against the trend, but this wine seemed very young and raw to me, maybe I just don't understand and it is actually diminished and shot. Did not seem balanced, but had the feel of a big fruit potential, but not good mid palate. Will have to try again sometime soon in hopes it gets better, or I realize it has long left the station. (4560 views)
Tasted by shaferguy91 on 9/8/2011 & rated 90 points: Not decanted. (4058 views)
Tasted by TwoSmoochies on 7/4/2011 & rated 92 points: Very nice after it opened - decant for an hour (3420 views)
Tasted by jerhardt on 6/14/2011: Very ripe, extracted, and lots of oak. Not my style, but was certainly a crowd pleaser. (3473 views)
Tasted by Mr T on 6/1/2011: Interesting wine and different than I expected when I pulled the cork. The wine is showing definite signs of age with bricking around the rims and medium red color. Definite earthy flavors that were almost barnyardy....not sure I really tasted syrah as opposed to simply older Bdx varietals....I enjoyed the wine and found it nice balanced with still plenty of fruit but no obvious oak and tannins resolved. I don't think I would buy it again for $80...Kongsgaard pricing not really for me. (3297 views)
Tasted by kenthargis on 4/12/2011: Mum drank by accident also. (3358 views)
Tasted by cortoncharlie on 12/27/2010 & rated 88 points: Not particularly interesting (3644 views)
Tasted by mxpbuy on 7/18/2010 & rated 94 points: Sampled 7/17/10. Fully opened in the glass within 15 to 30 minutes. This very fruit forward wine is overripe blueberries and black and red currant. Some menthol at mid palate through the finish. Some dried herbs at mid palate. The alcohol through on the finish a bit too much which took it down a point for me. 70% Merlot really rounded this wine out and made soft and smooth (but not silky). The 30% Syrah gave it some real backbone and density. In top form, where it will likely remain for a few more years. (3886 views)

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
