Community Tasting Notes (average 94.4 pts. and median of 95 pts. in 8 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by theportguy on 4/7/2022 & rated 96 points: The Last Hurrah; 4/7/2022-4/9/2022 (Seattle, Washington): Amber-orange in color. Light cinnamon and red fruit on the nose. There are some subtle notes that remind me of the funky characteristic of some Washington State and Oregon Syrahs. Rather than detract, it gives this wine a unique complexity that I really find enjoyable. There is cinnamon, mocha powder and strawberry on the rich, complex palate. The wine has great acidity and fine-grained tannins. It has a very long, luxurious finish. (649 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 10/6/2018 & rated 95 points: Perfectly mature, the wine was loaded with medicinal cherries, raisins, cocoa covered kirsch, cloves and allspice. Sweet, round, warm and with acidity, all this needed was a nice cigar. (2913 views)
Tasted by Blake Brown on 2/12/2018: 1935 TAYLOR, FLADGATE & YEATMAN VINTAGE PORT- from one of the oldest Port houses, founded in 1692; this was bigger, more full bodied and more expressive then the others in this flight; it gave toasted plum, black currant and black cherry fruit. (1645 views)
Tasted by DAN BAILEY on 12/14/2014: Ludicrously young showing for an 80 year old wine. I would have guessed 50 years younger! Still dark red colour. Quite a lot of alcohol poking out though. (5889 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 3/20/2014 & rated 95 points: The oldest bottle of Port I've tasted yet. This is a finesse style of Port with the color of rose hip[ tea. On the nose, chocolate covered strawberry jam, cherry griotte, cinnamon and all spice made the interesting perfume. Soft, silky, medium bodied and refined on the palate, the wine left you with soft, sweet, light chocolate and cherry sensations. (7178 views)
Tasted by petitblanc on 3/1/2014 & rated 94 points: Taylor Vintage Port Vertical (Los Angeles, California): Caramel-orange in color, a lightish shade. Complex and delicate nose shows tawny notes, orange peel, cinnamon, celery seed, and buttery caramel. Similar tawny profile on the palate, weak but sufficient acidity, warm but not unpleasant alcohol. A little short on the finish. A venerable old bottle, beautifully balanced. Delicate, light, perhaps a bit tired but still speaking clearly and clinging to a pleasing, delicate structure. Whitwham's bottling, 3 hours in decanter. (7481 views)
Tasted by petitblanc on 3/23/2013 & rated 92 points: Slightly pale in color, but still a lovely bright ruby-garnet at the core, fading to amber at the rim. Very spirity throughout, but still showing considerable depth of red fruit, along with sweet, earthy root beer and bright orange peel. Enough acidity to seem lively. Thinnish yet in some respects fresh and youthful. A surprisingly pleasant experience, from a bottle with raised cork, old dried seepage, and top shoulder fill. Double decanted and left 12 hours in the open bottle. UK export probably bottled by Whitwham's, with cork plainly imprinted "Taylor Vintage 1935, Bottled 1937". (6268 views)
Tasted by presterjohn on 12/25/2008: Decanted for four hours. Big sweet mouth, dark fruit peeking out, cloves and cinnamon, elegant spicy mouth with unctuous base, very moreish. (7344 views)

Taylor (Fladgate)

Producer Website

Taylor's vintage ports are renowned for their massive structure, concentration of flavour and distinctively masculine style. Taylor's Port is also renowned for being amongst the longest lived of all ports.

Robert Parker: "This house must certainly be the Latour of Portugal. Their ports are remarkably backward yet still impressive when young. Of all the vintage ports, those of Taylor need the longest time to mature and even when fully mature seem to have an inner strength and firmness that keep them going for decades."

Port Blend

Over a hundred varieties of grapes (castas) are sanctioned for port production, although only five (Tinta Barroca, Tinto Cão, Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo), Touriga Francesa, and Touriga Nacional) are widely cultivated and used.
