Community Tasting Notes (average 90.4 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 146 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Cabfrancophile on 4/27/2024 & rated 92 points: Day 1: Coravin-ed at cellar temperature. Immediately classic aromas, beef stock, tobacco, pasture, cherry, violets, tons going on, true bottle bouquet. Mid-weigh with a linear profile, crunchy red fruit, tobacco and minerality. Clean, pure, direct profile. Medium plus acidity, furry tannins on the finish, mostly resolved. This will continue to age, though whether it will improve from its current plateau is a matter of personal preference.

Day 2: Popped cork to finish bottle. Less feral, black currant, mint and menthol are more forward now. Otherwise, consistent with its gravelly, earthy origins. Such a singular wine, not a 'vin de garde', yet age-worthy and archetypical in its expression. (250 views)
Tasted by Tim Heaton on 4/14/2024: PnP. Very good showing, fully mature though still very much in its preferred window. Little to no sign of age on the medium ruby core. Soil, plum, the occasional barn note, some sage and forest, etc. Lovely medium/med+ body with exceptional balance and good+ persistence. A joy. Hard to believe I paid just $22 on release; way over-delivered that on that. Easily highly recommended (642 views)
Tasted by winchester-xi on 4/2/2024: Drinking beautifully with a bit of air. Relatively savory compared to, say, the preceding vintage, but lovely balance and, I’m inclined to say, finesse to the basic aromatic and flavor profile. (641 views)
Tasted by brooklynguy on 7/27/2023: opened at 5:30 and double decanted. Reductive at first, almost unpleasant. But blows off and this is a lovely wine, in the end. Served alongside a 2005 Breton Perrieres and this wine comes off as a bit rustic next to the Breton, and with noticeable green notes. But in a charming way. Perfectly balanced, harmonious in its expression of aroma and flavor, pungent and actually more expressive on the nose than the Breton, but not as deep or detailed. Delicious, typical, satisfying wine. (1648 views)
Tasted by mattym19 on 5/6/2023 & rated 91 points: By the bottle at Chambers in NYC. Nose is fresh and lifted, strawberries, clay and gravel. Palate is very pretty, tannins resolved, red berries, slight strawberry licorice, slight floral notes, crunchy and juicy, medium body, medium finish. Very pretty, great with the hanger steak and pork chop. (1230 views)
Tasted by Seth Rosenberg on 4/14/2023 & rated 94 points: PnP. Dark and funky - beautiful dark fruits - blackberry and black cherry and a bit of black currant. Nice funk - horsey and bell pepper, with a hint of leafy tobacco. Earthy. Pepper and white pepper. There’s a hint of candied fruit that I think is the lovely 2010 purity. Palate isn’t as open yet - but it’s getting there - dark and funky and murky. Lovely texture - soft and almost creamy - plush and a little grainy with resolved tannins. Dark fruit, earth, leather, funk, tobacco. There is a real Seve on entry for a bit. Good acid and excellent balance - finish is long and complex and funky and herbal/tobacco. The first of the older Baudrys I bought recently and I love it. Nose - 5.5/6, Palate - 5-5.5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17-17.5/20. (1569 views)
Tasted by LW31 on 3/25/2023: A bit feral and bloody on the nose like the '09 but this is showing more elegance and fruit. Great finish. Great now but will go for another decade. (1293 views)
Tasted by Winiac on 1/9/2023 & rated 87 points: balanced but short on finish. (1485 views)
Tasted by LW31 on 12/3/2022: Lovely classic Chinon. With a pleasing mineral streak. This domaine has only gotten better in the last decade but this shows very well. Drink nowish (1254 views)
Tasted by cweiss on 11/5/2022: Considerable funk but not excessive for my taste, even the next day. Textbook Loire Cab Franc. Drinking well. (1294 views)
Tasted by timewithwine on 10/1/2022: This is a burgundy beauty in the glass. The nose offers sandalwood, raspberry, and cranberry. Much the same on the palate where cinnamon joins in to continue the party. The mouthfeel is medium leaning light, but not at all thin. The finish is long enough to leave you wanting a bit more. A bit of forest floor carries the very end of the finish. So good we had to pull a second bottle. Some light sediment in the final pour and along the back of the bottle. 13% alc. With sirloin roasts of beef. 10.01.22. Recommended. (1359 views)
Tasted by wineshlub on 5/9/2022 & rated 92 points: Popped and poured. Aroma of red fruit with faint barnyard straw. Mature flavors of cassis, tobacco. Subtle tobacco and licorice finish. In a great place, no hurry to drink up but probably as good as it's going to get. (1981 views)
Tasted by centropomus on 3/4/2022 & rated 92 points: Powerful nose of horse barn took some time to blow off and reveal the lovely red forest berries underneath. Cranberries and lingonberry jam on a well balanced and nicely acidic, medium weight frame. Bell pepper and wet stones join the red forest berries after about 30 minutes. Tannins built gradually but remained in the background. Very nice smooth and long finish. I almost never say this, but this is one that would benefit from decanting to speed along getting rid of the barnyard. (1757 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 2/10/2022: Another excellent bottle of 2010 Baudry. Light, fluid, terrific balance between bright, citric red fruit and herbal olive. All atop a lovely clay base.

Two nights later, dry, earthy, and olives but still holding together well. (2421 views)
Tasted by whits on 10/30/2021 & rated 92 points: Musky and earthy on the nose, very Chinon in character, shows some black cherry, beets, anise and iron nuances in the mouth, dark, earthy, delicious, in a perfect place to open now with another 8 to 10 years of peak drinking (2112 views)
Tasted by winchester-xi on 8/18/2021: A bit tight after what was a very quick decant, but enjoyable nonetheless. Excellent accompaniment to a duck rillette. (2360 views)
Tasted by dke on 8/12/2021 & rated 89 points: Relatively closed initially, but better on day 2. Medium bodies cab franc, with excellent acidity.89-90 (2275 views)
Tasted by redwhiteandrich on 5/23/2021 & rated 91 points: Half hour in a gooseneck decanter to remove sediment, then poured back into bottle. Drunk over 5 hrs. Rough stuff initially, bretty and hard as nails. Then blossoming into a gravel patch of blackberries. Last glass was the most vibrant.

Really wish I had bought more of these at release, tis life. (2227 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 5/18/2021: Perfectly clear ruby. Light, green olive, fragrant cherry fruit, chalky base, and a twist of orange. Easy to drink and enjoy. (2669 views)
Tasted by 5laton on 4/16/2021: First night with this was tough - could only get through half a glass over 1-2 hours, it was just really awkward and closed, not at all pleasurable.
A full glass left out overnight (covered) was brilliant the following day, with a delightful maturing nose of sun-baked brown gravel and light roast coffee. The palate had some lovely, very fresh dark red fruits, softening tannins, and a long finish with that same brown rocky minerality. Slight astringence still lingers in the mouth. This completely smoked a bottle of 2011 Monte Bello.
On day 3 it's even better, the coffee notes have turned more toward cured tobacco, and those tannins have continued to relax.
Overall, this is the finest young vintage of Grezeaux I've had. It feels around 3-5 years from an early drinking window for my taste. (2204 views)
Tasted by pigdaddy on 12/26/2020 & rated 90 points: decanted one hour. deep garnet, no sign of age; nose took a long time to open up, more than an hour, some farm element (I live next to a cow dairy, so qualified to make that assessment), yet there's a very pretty dark fragrant floral note, tomato leaf also; elegant body; dried red currant, elevated & tangy, tannins still quite present. drinkable now, with time remaining.

challenged to match with a very traditional post-holiday family supper, this performed well.

pan-fried center cut country ham w/strawberry jam glaze; creamy Anson Mills grits; meaty collard greens; white turnips in cider vinegar (1920 views)
Tasted by Keith Levenberg on 12/2/2020: Enough bretty funk to make this taste like Ch. Musar made a Chinon but not so bad as to ruin the wine. Otherwise the fruit and structure are still pretty unevolved. The gritty tannins need food. (4451 views)
Tasted by timewithwine on 11/20/2020: No real notes as the cellar is moved. This is our 2nd bottle of Grezeaux after the 1999 mag. This wine is funky; tasting almost corked at first, yet brawny with black raspberries, leather, meat and smoke. This is much bigger than the 1999. One of the more powerful Grezeaux I can recall ... and yet that funkiness. 13% alc. With Charcuterie. (1278 views)
Tasted by christyler on 9/22/2020 & rated 91 points: I love how this wine is so silky and polished without being overly glossy or too touched up. The fruit is really ‘cool’ and still very primary.

Aging glacially. Some earlier bottles were less inspiring, but this was great. (2127 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 7/21/2020: Perfectly clear red with minimal fading at the extreme edge. High toned wintergreen aromas. Medium to lighter weight. Cassis, herb, green olive, and a surprisingly strong undertone of ground coffee. Firm acidity, deep base of clay soil, and some remaining tannin. Beautifully balanced, elegant Cabernet Franc that just oozes terroir. Drink or hold. Baudry produced a stellar set of 2010 reds. I haven't tasted them since 2013 or so, but if this wine is any indication, they are coming around superbly. (2949 views)

Domaine Bernard Baudry

Producer website

A graduate of the Lycée de Beaune, Baudry created his 25-hectare estate out of family parcels and purchased land. He quickly rose to prominence in the appellation for precise, textured Chinon. Baudry is now assisted by his son Matthieu. Baudry’s style exemplifies rich, precise fruit picked at perfect ripeness levels and vinified cleanly using state-of-the-art equipment.
