Tasted by BillBell73 on 4/12/2021: Medium orange in the glass with a slight haze. Fantastically complex and comes across initially as completely dry although that’s more a function of the searing acidity as there is a bit of sweetness underneath. The palate is a wild mixture of blood orange, almonds, and bitters. A beautiful Zind-Humbrecht in full maturity that is probably best suited to fish, poultry, or pork. On a side note, this may be the first wine I’ve had that was beyond John Gilman’s drink dates...never thought I’d get there but it is clear that he may have been too conservative on this particular vintage.  Tasted by prof b on 3/9/2021 & rated 95 points: This bottle had a correct fill and despite some signs of seepage under the foil, the cork came out easily with a durand. The wine itself was amber in color but immediately pleasurable. Ripe white fruits, honey, and just a touch of acid made this really sing. Sadly, the wine fell apart after about 2.5 hours but it was great until then! (1259 views)
Tasted by nywine68 on 12/2/2020 & rated 92 points: Orange color. Nose of tangerines and hazelnuts. Bracing acidity balanced with just enough sweetness. Nice complexity and nuance. Reasonable depth and plenty of length. Very enjoyable. (1240 views)
Tasted by Billigan on 6/28/2020 & rated 93 points: Lovely aromas of apples and wet stone, but the palate is where this wine really shines. Beautifully ripe golden delicious apples balanced perfectly by zippy acidity and a bracing, almost grippy minerality on the finish. In a great spot, but you get the sense this wine could stay on this nice plateau almost indefinitely! (1653 views)
Tasted by LW31 on 5/10/2020: Lovely aged, very classic Alsatian riesling. Not a bold wine. Lovely acidity, floral quality, dollop of more exotic fruit on finish. Great now. Don't see any reason to hold longer. Held up nicely to roast pork with herbs. (1442 views)
Tasted by kenv on 8/2/2018 & rated 93 points: WCC Blind Alsace Kaiseki Dinner (Shogun Sushi and Sake Bar, Delmar, NY): Seems a little shy after the last wine, but this is really good. Just not showy. Subtle, complex, floral and petrol. (2016 views)
Tasted by JeffGMorris on 12/23/2016 & rated 96 points: Dinner with Mom at The George, Wilmington, NC. Amber in color and playing its usual game with a rich nose that makes this appear to be a sweet wine and the palate is bone dry. With a finish that lasts forever. Very similar to previous notes. 10-15 more years of fine drinking. 50+14+14+9+9=96 (2084 views)
Tasted by salil on 5/18/2016 & rated 94 points: A crash course in Zind Humbrecht at Jeff and Dena's (Raleigh, NC): A remarkable contrast with the '89 Rangen - the nose on this suggests something sweeter with bright quince, peach, and light floral notes augmented by more mature savoury and burnished flavours, but the palate is completely dry, though packed with ripe apple and citrus fruit flavours over a base of stone and earthy minerality. It feels totally seamless on the palate, though remarkably different from the Rangen in texture - whereas that's all about cut and focus, this has a softer, almost pillowy feel on the palate. Wonderful wine, though perhaps I didn't give this enough attention with the jawdropping '89 Rangen alongside. (3337 views)
Tasted by JeffGMorris on 5/18/2016 & rated 95 points: Dinner with Salil at home. I love opening this wine for someone who has never had it as it is a great trick to play on people ( and also one of my favorite wines ). Tough competition sitting in a glass next to the '89 Rangen Riesling but it held its own just fine. Very sweet and rich fruit aromas on the nose giving the impression that this will be a sweet VT like wine. On the palate nothing could be further than this as it is completely dry while retaining enough richness to never be austere. Windsbuhl smoke mixes with fresh apples and citrus on the palate and leads into the very long finish. A great wine as always. 50+13.5+13.5+9+9=95 (2016 views)

Tasted by AFulk on 6/21/2014 & rated 92 points: Cork was saturated through, and there was clearly some seepage under the capsule. Still, the wine was in great shape. The color was a dark gold, but the palate was relatively unevolved for a 20-year old Riesling. Lots of white fruits and flowers, without a lot of secondary development. Very enjoyable. (1899 views)
Tasted by JeffGMorris on 12/18/2013 flawed bottle: Corked (1851 views)
Tasted by hsacks on 4/8/2013 & rated 88 points: Deep brownish/gold color. Aromas of quince, grapefruit, minerals and tea. Ripe fruit in the mouth with good depth and length and a surprising core of firm acidity. This wine while still reasonably intact, was a similar to the last bottle I drank 12/09. It lacked the richness, the sugar and the mouthfeel of bottles consumed 10 years ago. Drink up! (2445 views)
Tasted by avp on 7/5/2011: Deep golden yellow.
Rather savoury and powerful on the nose with seashells, almonds and umami - petrol, smoke and steel. The ripe fruit notes have clearly faded to the background.
Dry and fullbodied palate with balancing acidity. Sweetish slightly oxidised fruit. Weighty and round, but vivacious at the same time. Ginger, ripe lemon, almonds and gunpowder. Long lasting finish.
Impressive dry Riesling packed with muscle. (2293 views)
Tasted by jeff nowak on 2/6/2011 & rated 90 points: 14% alcohol. opened 7 days ago (!) and i thought it was tart and bitchy with petrol. private preserved and forgotten about in the fridge until tonight. allowed for temperature equilibrium and now consumed over 90 minutes. it's a second cousin to the 01, but the wine has smoothed out and is delivering a solid performance. it lacks the beautiful weight and mouthfeel that i crave in a Z-H, and it's not as unctous in the fruit department. however, it's still a nice wine.  Tasted by robmatic on 9/10/2010 & rated 93 points: Deep gold color, this bottle showed a slight bit of oxidation, but was impressive nonetheless. Rich and long, a fascinating wine on several different levels. (2193 views)
Tasted by andtheodor on 9/10/2010 & rated 92 points: Z-H Night: Dark, almost bronze color. This is a huge and luscious wine; apricots, grilled pineapple, maple, bracing acidity. Almost like an off-dry dessert wine. (2714 views)
Tasted by JeffGMorris on 4/24/2010 & rated 96 points: Dinner at Volt Table 21, Frederick, MD. Medium gold in the glass this remains a reference point for dry Riesling. The nose was rich and fruity with some earthy notes. This is followed by a very dry palate that displays grapefruit notes along with huge amounts of minerality and even some Rangen-like notes. The fruit is rich, deep and very pure. Very long on the finish and still drinking fairly young. A monumental wine. 50+14+14+9+9 = 96 (1765 views)
Tasted by JeffGMorris on 8/14/2009: Dinner at Revolution, Durham, NC with Bill. No formal note taken. (2000 views)
Tasted by JeffGMorris on 1/12/2009 & rated 97 points: I love this wine. Not just because it is such a great wine, but because it sparks a lot of discussion in our house about which Windsbuhl Riesling will be th finest ever made given time to age. Is it this tremendous '94, which Dena believes to be the winner, or is the '05, still a baby but with boundless potential and my choice. In the end we always agree that an evening drinking either vintage and being able to have such an "argument" means life can't be too bad. Medium gold in color, this impeccably balanced wine has lively acidity and a very ripe nose that makes the brain expect a sweet wine. Then this full bodied wine hits the palate with rich, deep, pure and concentrated fruit and the flavors of apple, grapefruit, flowers, lavender and minerals, But none of that is where your brain initially focuses. The focus turns to the fact that this wine is dry and that you are totally confused by what you just experienced. The very long finish gives you plenty of time to contemplate the greatness that just crossed your palate. Hmmm...sounds like I just made a very good argument for Dena's side of the story! I need those '05s to age and prove that they will be every bit this wine's equal. 50+14+14+9.5+9.5 = 97 (2253 views)
Tasted by JeffGMorris on 9/9/2008 & rated 95 points: Medium to dark gold in color, this was another great showing for this beautiful wine. A very rich and ripe nose of citrus and honey is followed by an equally rich but dry palate full of minerality. Medium to full bodied and very well balanced with a refreshing streak of acidity that perfectly matches the richness. A refined wine that is developing but still needs more time to hit it's apogee. The depth and purity of the fruit in here is incredible, a truly noble wine. Long finish. To my tastes this is consistently the finest dry Riesling I've ever had...until the '05 version has some age to it. 50+13+14+9+9 = 95 (2183 views)
Tasted by JeffGMorris on 12/31/2007 & rated 95 points: New Year's Eve at Steve & Barb's house. Light to medium gold in the glass. Beeswax, smokiness and a slight sweetness on the nose, this wine explodes on the palate with a level of richness few wines could achieve. The richness gives the sensation of a wine with some residual sugar but this was vinified dry ( probably a 1 to 1.5 on the current ZH apparent sweetness scale ). Super long finish where the acidity shines through to clear the wine off of the palate. This wine continues to drink as a very young wine that has many years ( decades ) of positive development still ahead. Matched beautifully with U6 Scallops over Chestnut Polenta. 50+13+14+9+9 = 95+ (2287 views)
Tasted by JeffGMorris on 6/21/2007 & rated 94 points: Dinner at Sawasdee with Steve, Bill & David B. This wine really kicked things into high gear for the evening. Big and rich but very dry. I love how the rich nose on this wine always gives one a surprise when the palate is very dry. Still very young tasting and I think it will improve further with more bottle age. Great smoky and spicy notes, clearly of Windsbuhl origins. 50+13+13+9+9 = 94+ (2309 views)
Tasted by The Wine Bum on 8/6/2005: After trying his 1994 Gewurz, which was loaded with sweetness, the big surprise was how dry this was. Served from a magnum it was still a baby, big nose of citrus, minerals and just a hint of petrol coming through. This must be as full-bodied as dry Riesling gets, yet there was no heaviness or sense of over-extraction, just incredibly vivid and powerful minerality, apples, smokey nuances, stony complexity, power, precision and ridiculous length. This was pretty staggering stuff, and from Magnum is probably a decade from full maturity. (2847 views)

Zind-Humbrecht

Producer website
Domaine Zind-Humbrecht is one of the stars of the Alsace, in the northeastern corner of France. Fought over for decades by Germany and France, the region, according to Robert M. Parker Jr., “is perhaps the most underrated and underutilized source of great white wines in the world.” Zind-Humbrecht was created in 1959 by Leonard Humbrecht and Genevieve Zind. Their son Olivier is now instrumental in running the 99-acre estate, which the family still owns. Like many Alsatian producers, Zind-Humbrecht makes white wines in varying degrees of sweetness, from dessert whites to very dry wines. The vineyards are planted to 30% Riesling, 30% Gewurztraminer, 29% Pinot Gris, and smaller amounts of Pinot Noir, Muscat, Chardonnay, Auxerrois and Pinot Blanc. Up to 18,000 cases are produced annually. Many are Grand Crus and single vineyard bottlings.
