Community Tasting Notes (18) Avg Score: 94.3 points

  • Opens with air, but an hour or two really makes a noticeable difference.

Very deeply colored, almost black, with a gentle nose showing ripe plums, mushroom, hints of menthol. Stunning on the supple, endless palate which reveals rich cassis fruit, the fading remnants of an acidic bite that probably was very evident when the wine was released and soft, polished tannins. The mineral lift on the finish carries it out almost endlessly. Mature and exceptionally enjoyable right now. 94 on day one, but I bet I'll revise my score upward after 24 hours to breath in the half-finished bottle.

  • Nose: Ripe black fruit, liquored yet not overripe.
Palate: Medium+ body yet the fruit feels thick and powerful. Primary black plum, some cassis with secondary notes of smoked cigar, cherry pits, and spice on the finish, which faded over time into more ripe dark fruited licorice. Definitely cleaned up with air.
Structure: Nice clean mouthfeel without overdoing the cassis/cedar notes. Nice cut of medium acidity. Medium finish.

Has the glossy black plum and clean mouthfeel of a Jamet syrah, with Cali fruit / alcohol instead of olives. I know its sacriledge etc. and its a cab... 93-94..

  • F***!

Opened for my birthday. Corked was clearly TCA tainted, but on initial pour into the decanter the nose was bright and fresh. However, the first taste and one an hour later left no hope but this was completely TCA tainted from a bad cork.

Thankfully, a cellar full of other beauties competing for my attention! But sadly, this was my last ‘09 Greer.

  • Captivating nose on opening, with rich floral and dark fruit tones wafting from the bottle as soon as I pull the cork. This seems to be at peak for my palate. The tannins lay out a fine blanket on which the black cherry, black raspberry, and faint brown spice notes strut their stuff. There’s a pleasing old leather element in the finish, which just rolls on and on. This was my first Greer and I’m smitten. Fantastic wine.

  • Dinner with Johnny & Ken (Wildfire Oak Brook): May have been in a somewhat closed down stage. Showed a lot of promise but I wanted more and I felt it wasn't giving what it could.
    Plummy, dark charcoal, smokey.
Palate is moderate complex but showing just lots of purple fruit right now. Would love to revisit down the road.
