Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 93.4 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 47 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by glou.sf on 2/29/2024 & rated 94 points: Quite lovely nose with lemon notes, herbs, minerals, and orange zest. Good acidity with lemon juice and zest, and crushed rocks on the palate. Nice finish that lingers for a while. A lovely wine with nice complexity, but wasn't the big step up next to the 1er Crus that I was expecting. (380 views)
Tasted by Papies on 12/8/2023 & rated 92 points: 2023 Athens Wine Event; 12/8/2023-12/9/2023 (Athens, Greece): Tasted Blind.
This is now impressively young and almost buttoned down and shy. Needs a lot of decanting at this stage and it took it a bit of time to get going and even 2 hours later this was still not there. We are not sure if it’s down to our bottle or generic for the wine ( we had the 2018 vintage of this 5 months ago and was magical for example, Papies 96) .
The nose was shy and co use have been a lot of different Chardonnays. Nicol said this could even be assertive in the focus and energy. A wine of quality for sure but just shy. 91-92 and please decant. (682 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 6/3/2023 & rated 94 points: Lemon curd aromatics. Beautiful, clean and mellowing palate. (896 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 5/10/2023 & rated 94 points: Definition of lean, crisp and clean Chablis with tense citrus profile. (949 views)
Tasted by apg23 on 3/3/2023 & rated 93 points: Smells like honeysuckle and lemon. The taste is definitely lemon - very acidic. Despite the acid bite, it is pleasing on the palate. Really good citrusy Chablis. (832 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 1/27/2023 & rated 94 points: Classic citrus aromatics, ultra clean profile and serious length. (1061 views)
Tasted by RobinTeo on 1/20/2023 & rated 92 points: The one with Raveneau (Sonder): On the opening, pronounced lemon oil, salt water, limestone, almonds. Iodine, oyster shell, hay(straw), sudachi and unripe meyer lemon ensued on the palate with good minerality and depth but showing slightly green. Crispy acidity with grand cru length but not mind-blowing start to the evening. (952 views)
Tasted by llink on 12/6/2022 & rated 94 points: PNP. Lovely nose showing iodine, lemon, oyster shells and a touch of honey. Deep and complex palate, lighter texture but tons of energy and flavor. Right in the zone. (688 views)
Tasted by llink on 10/19/2022: Raveneau Flight (Angler Restaurant San Francisco): PNP, served blind. Honey, sea breeze and lemons on the nose. Deep palate, seemed simple at first but it opens up after 3 hours of air displaying more complexity and tension. Lovely. (847 views)
Tasted by Wine Canuck on 9/24/2022 & rated 95 points: Montreal 2022; 9/23/2022-9/25/2022 (Montreal): This pours medium straw in the glass with flecks of green and ivory. The nose is extremely aromatic and complex and very clasically Chablis. Aromas blast cold cream, mineral, oyster shell, lemon, mint, shrubby herbs, intense white flowers, dry hay, and light whisps of honey. The palate is equally as amazing as the nose entering on the rich custardy lactic notes but quickly turning lightly waxy fruit then intense minerality, closing on puckering oyster shell. The balance here is immaculate and the texture silky and perfect. Still early in it's development considering it's 10+ years on but it's absolutely wide open and thoroughly enjoyable. Absolutely reference point stuff and an amazing Raveneau experience, finally. (1477 views)
(1029 views)
Tasted by englishman's claret on 7/4/2022 & rated 95 points: This is a little more expressive than a few years ago with an impactful, vibrant, classically-Raveneau Meyer lemon and oyster nose with a creamy palate cut by perfect acid.

4 bottles of this were opened 24 hours, 8 hours, 3 hours, and just before tasting. Each bottle was poured half into decanter and the other half left in the bottle. Among the bottom 5 wines were both decanted and undecanted pop-and-pour and 24 hour samples, suggeseting a sweet-spot for a few hours of air for top youngish Chablis.

In descending order, the group preference was for 3 hour bottle, 8 hour bottle, 8 hour decanter, pop-and-pour decanter, 24 hour bottle, 3 hour decanter, pop and pour bottle, 24 hour decanter. (1738 views)
Tasted by kr522 on 6/7/2022: Drank it outdoors, which never helps a wine, yet still a shining example of raveneau who did such a great job with 11s. Crisp citrus and green apple, minerals, perhaps not as much power as last time but a gem (1065 views)
Tasted by dcwino on 3/25/2022 & rated 94 points: Expressive nose displaying rich concentrated yellow fruit with a hint of white, granny smith, lemon curd, honey, saline, light caramel, anise, beeswax, sweet spices and limestone. There is a hint of the 11 green which is not too bothersome. Excellent concentration, layers upon layers of succulent sweet yellow fruit, rich, dense and deeply toned but also good balance and precision, bright acidity, medium mineral, and a long succulent sweet yellow fruit driven finish with honey at the end. There is a hint of pyrazine note. This is drinking nicely. (1436 views)
Tasted by dcwino on 7/16/2021 & rated 95 points: Annual gathering with Chicago winos in Chicago (Smyth and The Loyalist - Chicago IL): Classic Chablis nose with a hint of delicious Raveneauness, delicate cool white fruit, lemon, granny smith, honeysuckle, sea breeze, a hint of pyrazine which is not bothersome, cool mountain stream and wet stone. Excellent concentration, very finely layers generous cool white fruit, excellent focus and precision, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a seamless long cool white fruit driven finish with smoke and honeysuckle at the end. This is drinking beautifully. (2146 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 7/16/2021 & rated 95 points: DC/Chicago Wine Dinner Extravaganza (Smyth and The Loyalist - Chicago IL): In 13/11/09/06 vertical. Lean style with classic Chablis brightness and minerally textures. Green apple everywhere with even concentration to stand side-by-side with the wine's big structure. OK, on the lean side with some faint bitterness, but that works well here. My favorite of the vertical. (2323 views)
Tasted by Brolawa on 5/13/2021 & rated 95 points: M&PD Zoom Tasting night of following white Burgs and red Bordeaux:

2013 François Raveneau Blanchot

2011 François Raveneau Valmur

2008 Vincent Dancer Chevalier-Montrachet

2000 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Pucelles
1990 Château Troplong Mondot

1990 Château Montrose

2009 Château Smith Haut Lafitte

Exceptional Chablis, but mostly exceptional bc it tastes like it is somewhere from Montrachet. Full-bodied and an elegant mix of savory and sweet. This outclassed the Blanchot. (1465 views)
Tasted by Eric on 5/12/2021: M&PD Zoom Tasting: White Burgundy & Red Bordeaux (Zoom): Flint and sulphur, blows off a bit, a whiff of marine, EXPLOSIVE palate, energetic, super salty, loooooong finish, wide open, just exquisite! (1975 views)
Tasted by sdr on 4/17/2021 & rated 93 points: So different from the Burgundy of the Côte d’Or. Much leaner, lots of seashell minerals. The Valmur from Raveneau is exceptionally rich for the type, though, almost thick on the palate. Quite impressive and not really austere. A bit of salty grapefruit let’s you know this is definitely not Meursault. Save it for your oysters or shellfish. (1603 views)
Tasted by Cote d'Or on 3/5/2021: Tasting over 3 hrs
-translucent light gold-green
-low-key lemon and oyster shell
-med acidity, med- weight bitter quinine, great length
-elegant regal (1049 views)
(1384 views)
Tasted by kr522 on 5/22/2020 & rated 96 points: drinking exceptionally well, Raveneau simply nailed this vintage. This is crisp, finely detailed, complex, and showing a subtle succulence to the fruit that i find missing in most 11s. (1455 views)
Tasted by lepetitchateau on 11/10/2019 & rated 95 points: Showing drop-dead minerality and expressive fruit. Yum (1209 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 6/30/2019: Survey of 2011 Dauvissat and Raveneau Premier and Grand Crus (San Francisco): Stone and stone fruit aromatics. Round, dry, and powerful in the mouth with outstanding salinity and a back end that is full of soil. Like the Dauvissat Preuses, this also steadily improved. Very enjoyable now but bound to continue its ascendance for at least another 5 or 6 years. (2501 views)
Tasted by dcwino on 6/7/2019 & rated 95 points: Five winos excellent adventure , mostly in Burgundy; 6/7/2019-6/15/2019 (Beaune, France): Expressive nose displaying cool citrus fruit, lemon curd, a hint of the 11 green, mint, honeysuckle, sap, cool mountain stream, sea breeze and limestone. Excellent concentration, layers upon layers of concentrated yellow citrus, dense, excellent focus and precision, bright acidity, strong mineral and a long beautifully focused mineral finish. This is drinking beautifully. (3902 views)

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio

Chablis

Chablis (Fédération de Défense de l'Appellation Chablis) | Chablis (Burgundy Wines)

2014 Vintage Notes:
"... a hybrid of 2004/2007 and 2010. The stone, citrus and limestone amalgam is exactly what we search for in Chablis as the style harkens to a day in the Cote de Beaune proper (1960's - 1980's) when wine was not meant to be consumed the week it was released, battonage was not used by all and new oak was rarely seen ... the texture is natural and 'of the vintage' not 'of the winemaker' .... Like Sancerre or the Loire in general, 2014 in Chablis is one of those rare years with extract and transparency. It appears to be a vintage for the "neoclassic" ages and those of us intent on cellaring the most terroir-driven (but still powerful) examples of vineyard, site-place and varietal will want to invest (heavily) in the magnetic and electric 2014's." - Jon Rimmerman

2018 Vintage Notes:
"There’s not that razor sharp Chablis acidity in 2018,” says Patrick Piuze. “But there is good definition of place. The dry conditions drove vines to drink deeper down in the soil profile."
