Community Tasting Notes (average 92.4 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 88 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by JonnyG on 9/19/2020 & rated 92 points: Whereas previously enjoyed bottles of this were decidedly advanced, I’m happy to say that this one was singing, with crisp apple and stone fruit notes in delicious tension with the wine’s minerality. Good acidity too. (1317 views)
Tasted by Vinophiliac559 on 9/2/2019 & rated 91 points: Surprisingly fresh at 8 yrs old, nose of lemon curd and damp sea breeze. Palate has a little RS, a bit tropical, citrus, and has put on some weight relative to younger versions. Finish is acidic and citrusy. No overt signs of oxidation in this bottle and I imagine will continue to drink well for a few years to come. 90-91 (1563 views)
Tasted by JonnyG on 7/20/2019 flawed bottle: Decidedly past peak at this point and fading fast, with little energy, some muted fruit and a metallic aftertaste. (1478 views)
Tasted by bularry on 11/22/2018 & rated 94 points: marvelous wine (1632 views)
Tasted by brigcampbell on 1/6/2018: Blind - I was sure it was Chardonnay although others were leaning Chenin. Regardless I was more comfortable that it was French. Second time I've done this with this wine. Dark golden so looks aged. Nose has a very distinct hemp aroma, that should have been a clue to LF. There's a mushroom quality. Excellent aromas which makes fun just to smell. The palate is soft, slick. Pear and nectarine fruit flavors with some Christmas spice. Fantastic finish. Just noticed I have a mag of this in the cellar, sweet. (2238 views)
Tasted by Frank Murray III on 1/5/2018: Served blind. Starts off with a smoky (reductive?) aromatic. The color leans to more of a light gold, mildly bronzy tone, too. The same toastiness is also woven through the palate, with yellow apple and licorice. We had this next to the 2014 Tyler Dierberg Chard and that wine was more my style, as I found this LF to be a bit heavier and less nuanced for my tastes. (1964 views)
Tasted by Bellissimo on 9/3/2017: Brought to a restaurant, shared with friends. Continued to be reminded why I like the White Hill the best of the CA chards -- the lack of oak. Crisp, clean, nice acids with just enough roundness. Won't be confused with a Chablis but delicious nonetheless. (1565 views)
Tasted by tcarter on 8/5/2017 & rated 91 points: Finished off on Day 3, after simple VacuVin and keeping in fridge. Still very alive, though much better on Day 1. Also, better served cold. (1614 views)
Tasted by tcarter on 8/3/2017 & rated 93 points: Really wonderful. Crisp and clean. Paired beautifully with a very light shrimp and zucchini dish. (1506 views)
Tasted by wiscgrad on 4/15/2017 & rated 93 points: This is quickly becoming my favorite California white. Agree with the general consensus. Walks the line between big California and good acidity. Pro scores are all wrong and this is showing no signs of falling apart. (1365 views)
Tasted by wineismylife on 11/26/2016 & rated 93 points: WIML93

Tasted non blind.

Light yellow color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of peach, yellow pear and a hint of brown spice. Flavors of peach, nectarine and yellow pear. Bright acidity, medium to full bodied. Drink or hold. (1756 views)
Tasted by tcarter on 8/27/2015 & rated 93 points: Wonderful. Has a hint of crispness and a minerality that puts it more in the chablis camp for me. Had with seafood, and this bottle beat an '07 Fevre Chablis CdB for everyone at the table... (1930 views)
Tasted by Bellissimo on 7/9/2015: Brought to a restaurant and didn't focus as much on the bottle as the people we were with. Stone fruit, red apple, tropical backbone, nice flintiness. Good acids, not butter. Very well received by the table. (1955 views)
Tasted by *Vine* on 7/9/2015: Popped and poured, light straw-gold. Expansive immediately off the pop, the nose shows an initial burst of flintiness which quickly evolves into lovely, citrus-infused notes of lemon bar, honeyed peaches, beeswax, almond paste and a subtle impression of the herbaceous. Moderate body. This has that impression of vibrant, perfectly ripened fruit you often get from Chardonnays made under ideal circumstances...and while there's still a bit of citrus, it makes way for bolder flavors of ripe apples, pears and stone fruits (who says Chardonnay never tastes like anything?? ;) ). Well-balanced, with moderate acidity keeping things lively on the measured close.
This one seems to be in an absolutely perfect spot for drinking, no reason to hold.

Quick comment: The overt flint/matchstick note is perhaps why this could fool one into thinking it comes from across the pond...that said, the flavors show as purely California at it's most delicious. (1950 views)
Tasted by brigcampbell on 3/19/2015: Blind. Guessed French Chardonnay. Yeah, it was a california tasting but I figured he'd try and slip one by.

Very light yellow color. Great nose of tree fruit and cut grass, actually, more like humbbolt skunk. Palate has flint and matchstick, really screaming French. Clean, crisp finish. Excellent. (2216 views)
Tasted by JonnyG on 3/7/2015 & rated 89 points: A touch less vibrant than my last bottle, with a slightly metallic aftertaste. (2174 views)
Tasted by CamWheeler on 9/18/2014 & rated 90 points: Mix of wines at Via Alta: Peach, lime, quite musky florals and talcum powder. Lithe, focussed and has a wave of cleansing freshness thanks to the acidity. Has some potential to improve over the next 5-7 years. Thank very much to JonnyG for bringing it over for us to try! (2224 views)
Tasted by Bellissimo on 9/12/2014: Brought to a gathering of non-wine geeks. Bottle was well received and went quickly. Stone fruit, a bit of apple, nice mineral components, kiss of oak. (2235 views)
Tasted by scott w on 8/25/2014 & rated 91 points: Found a stray in my cellar and very happy I did, I notice as these chards progress they seem to get even better with more air, after an hour this bottle was singing...really nice bottle. (2362 views)
Tasted by scott w on 7/23/2014 & rated 92 points: Last one and just fantastic, green apple, mineral, meyer lemon lively acidity, crisp. (2284 views)
Tasted by Jahull03 on 6/27/2014: Really liked this. Immediately expressive, pretty nose upon opening. Fruit consistent with other tasters - peach, apricot.... Great minerality and medium weight. Might think it's a very forward, particularly fruity chablis with all that mineral, but it's missing some acidity. Still, not flabby - not even close.

A great chardonnay for $36. Exceeds high expectations (2231 views)
Tasted by wineismylife on 5/31/2014 & rated 92 points: WIML92

Tasted non blind at a wine tasting.

Light yellow color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of yellow pears, yellow apples, talc and lemon. Flavors of lemon, lime, yellow pears and Granny Smith apples. Medium to bright acidity, medium to full bodied. Drink or hold. (2655 views)
Tasted by *Vine* on 4/26/2014: Popped and poured, moderate-light gold. Showy, fruit-driven aromas of peach, citrus zest, lily, and apple blossom with a touch of salinity. Medium body. Great precision and depth of fruit on the palate with an abundance of apple and stone fruits. Plus acidity lends an impression of citrus and minerals on the lengthy close. Truly sumptuous and quite delicious, this white is drinking perfectly right now and will continue to over the next 1-2 years.

Quick comment: While this has the requisite acidity to age for a long time, why wait for the fruit to diminish when it's so luscious and fresh at present? Unless you prefer diminished fruit, this is one for the near term. Either way, a very exciting CA Chard. (1936 views)
Tasted by GalvezGuy on 4/4/2014 & rated 91 points: Liquid Farm 4/4 Chardonnay Shootout (Lucio's BYOB, Houston): Tasted blind. On the nose, citrus, green apple, chalk, sea air. On the palate, apple, pear, meyer lemon, and a nice saline quality. Searing acidity on the finish. Very Chablis-like but the ripe fruit profiles put in CA. Very surprised to see this as the White Hill. I think I liked this more than others. Needs more time to integrate the fruit and acids. Has the ability age longer term. #2 (2727 views)
Tasted by J0R0 on 2/15/2014 & rated 92 points: What a surprise. Always nice to agree with the other reviews. Very well made wine. Great fruit without being over the top or flabby. Nice acidity throughout the pour with excellent balance. The finish would meet your expectations. (2172 views)

The Chardonnay Grape

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
