Tasted by Jack Cranley on 12/9/2023 & rated 95 points: An absolutely top tier Chardonnay experience. And I say that with no asterisks. It's not great for an American Chardonnay. It's not great for an Oregon Chardonnay. It's not great for a new world Chardonnay. It is just a damn fine chardonnay through and through in a world-class lens.
Lovers of Chambolle-Musigny will likely find a lot of joy here.

Pair fruit, quince, apricot, honeycomb, orange blossom, streak of vanilla, a little chiffon cake, some white peach, along with a core of flinty, whetstone minerality, and a Jasmine high note plus a little squeeze of lime on top.

Utterly complex and pleasure inducing. At 11 years old, this wine is only beginning the prime of its life. I am so glad I have three more bottles of this because I'm probably going to stagger those three across the next 15 to 20 years, because that's how packed in tight everything is here.

If you were wise enough to pick some of this up some years ago and you've been hanging on to it still to this day, congratulations. You win! There is no hurry on this bottle whatsoever. I would say if I was going to guess perfect year to drink this in, I would call it 2030. (249 views)

Tasted by Sourdough on 5/21/2017 & rated 90 points: Very slight cliuduness with mediim yellow color. Moderstely oaky nose over melon and pear. Melon and pear dominate the palate. Some malolactic cobversion but balanced and controlled. Very pleasant. (1374 views)
Tasted by wineismylife on 5/20/2016 & rated 90 points: WIML90

Tasted blind in a Chardonnay blind tasting.

Light yellow color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of orange peel, apricot, lemon and mixed yellow fruits. Flavors of lemon zest, cherry, yellow pear and an earthy pit kind of a finish. Medium to bright acidity, full bodied. Drink or hold. My guess was this is a 2012 California Chardonnay, possibly from Castello Amorosa. (2139 views)
Tasted by Oregonpinotgirl1967 on 2/13/2016 & rated 88 points: Rich and creamy with hints of pineapple upside down cake, honey suckle (1908 views)
Tasted by BadOyster on 11/28/2014 & rated 92 points: Evolving with a decrease in fruit, but also decrease in oaky flavor. Still a very inviting chardonnay. (2979 views)
Tasted by Magnum Bill on 11/7/2014 & rated 92 points: An update from a few months ago. Nice chablis style chard with a mineral nose and taste. Very enjoyable with crab or a mild fish. (1633 views)
Tasted by saki846 on 11/7/2014: Amazing wine and showing great.
Reminiscent of Puligny-Montrachet. Lush and mouth filling. (1959 views)
Tasted by Spl232 on 10/25/2014 & rated 93 points: Definitely a favorite of mine. This is what I what I wish all Oregon producers would try to acheive with with their Chardonnay. It has definitively expressive fruit notes, but mostly stone fruits (pear, green apple and some apricot) but still maintains a racy mineral backbone with a slate quality. (1621 views)
Tasted by MoserJP on 9/14/2014 & rated 90 points: This is a very clean and polished Chardonnay. The aromatics are light, yet complex with salty cantaloupe, pineapple, Jonagold apples, and a bit of toast. The palate has a full feel to it with an interesting balance of tart fruit, cantaloupe rind, fresh pastry, and popsicle stick. This is delicious on its own, but it seems neglectful not to pair it with seafood. (1484 views)
Tasted by mmcdds on 8/31/2014 & rated 91 points: What a pleasant surprise. I'm not typically a fan of new world chardonnay, or perhaps more accurately, I'm not a fan of typical new world chardonnay. I have trouble getting past the over oaked , buttery approach that has become so prevalent in California and Oregon chardonnay. This wine however, was strikingly crisp with a penetrating minerality at its core. The green and tropical fruit flavors were clean and well delineated with good depth. The oak treatment seems to have been carried out with a deft, unassuming hand and forms a subtle framework for this wine. My favorite expression of chardonnay is Grand Cru Chablis, and if I had tasted this blind, I certainly would have guessed Chablis. (925 views)
Tasted by gripNsip on 8/2/2014 & rated 88 points: The nose shows a nice aroma of fresh yellow apples, ripe pineapple and a touch of oak. Overall not overly intense aromas, on initial tastes I found it rather mute among other wines. Medium-heavy weight in the mouth, the pineapples deliver on the palate with apples and rich orange melon. The acid is well balanced to the intensity of the palate, if a little behind it. The rich, somewhat ripe fruit flavors are what show most strongly and persist through the finish nicely. The wine has enough body and intensity to stand up to hot food too, which I'm finding nice. It's a really nice wine to drink. Overall it's a straight-forward, new world Chardonnay that I enjoy drinking but I don't find that complex, at least currently. I love this producer's Pinots, while I found this delicious I expected a bit more considering the price point. (1533 views)
Tasted by Magnum Bill on 7/23/2014 & rated 93 points: For this bottle, my first (but certainly not last!) Ayoub, my immediate thought was: Wow! What a great chablis! Light and fresh with no pungent aromas or sour aftertaste. It has great finesse...truly a wine with wonderful balance. This is really enjoyable, and I want more.

I'm in the midst of a virtual tour of France, and while I haven't visited the town of Chablis yet, I'm imagining this wine is worthy of that appellation. It's certainly not one of those cheap knock-offs from Les Etats-Unis.

Soon I'll report on my comparison to the real French McCoy. I may have to downgrade this bottle if it doesn't measure up. But I doubt I will. (893 views)
Tasted by ksteiner on 3/22/2014: Very crisp and fresh nose. Smell a tinge of pineapple. Apples and pears on the palate. (1431 views)
Tasted by Italiana on 3/6/2014: Getting better and better. Only regret is not pacing consumption so we can see how this vintage develops. (1102 views)
Tasted by Italiana on 2/27/2014: Starting to show its stuff after shipping. Very precise citrus in medium-to-full bodied mode. Fruit buffered by crisp acidity. Long and full finish. (1003 views)
Tasted by Italiana on 2/6/2014: Liking this better now that it's starting to calm down from shipping. Nice balance and lovely melding of flavors from the fruit and the winemaking. (956 views)
Tasted by BadOyster on 2/3/2014 & rated 93 points: Quite possibly the best Chardonnay I've ever tasted from the new world. The nose is classic buttery popcorn, which was worrisome; however, the palate is bright, with asian pear almost verging on tropical, but with a salinity/minerality and acidity that keeps me wanting more and more. The wood treatment is restrained, which I enjoy immensely. (898 views)
Tasted by Italiana on 1/30/2014: Light bodied, lemony and bright as opposed to buttery and rich--nice aperitif. Would probably pair well with food as well. (811 views)
Tasted by Italiana on 1/8/2014: Certainly well made and nicely articulated, but probably drank too soon after receiving, so no further comment until the next bottle gets a decent recovery time from shipment. (862 views)
Tasted by saki846 on 12/25/2013: Big Chardonnay with nice finish. (749 views)
Tasted by michlee53 on 12/9/2013 & rated 92 points: A medium bodied chardonnay with a green grape, Barlett pear and agave flavors. Very little oak noted leaving the fruit to speak for itself. Overall, the wine has excellent acidity and minerality, producing a nice long finish. I detect a bit of heat, which I suspect will not be an issue, as I expect the wine to pick up a substantial amount of weight in the next 6-12 months. I feel that this wine is probably best drunk in 2-5+ years. Fantastic wine from a terrific winery! 92/100. (802 views)
Tasted by bear on 11/9/2013: From Winery Website - The 2012 Ayoub Chardonnay features a beautifully complex nose of Bosc pear, lemon zest, baked apple, orange blossom and wet slate. On the palate, the wine is all about balance and thrilling complex flavors from start to finish. It has a medley of lemon meringue, almond, pie crust, honey comb which is highlighted by bright juicy acidity and flinty minerality. The mouthwatering finish lingers endlessly.
The 2012 Ayoub Chardonnay was aged for 11 month in older French oak barrels & one stainless steel barrel. It was slow cold fermented for 9 month, stirring the lees weekly. Although this wine is delicious now, I recommend you hold it for > 6 month before you drink it. This wine will age well and you can cellar it for 5+ years. It will probably develop to be my best Chardonnay yet!

Ayoub

Producer website

After a long and careful search to find the best site possible to plant Pinot Noir, Mohamad “Mo” Ayoub found the land he dreamt about nestled in the Dundee Hills. Untouched to vines – Mo saw the perfect potential to plant Pinot Noir and create a sustainable, healthy and top producing vineyard. The volcanic jory soils, south-facing slopes and fertile land made it an easy decision to plant four prized acres of vines in 2001.

The Dundee Hills appellation is highly respected and known for its bright and elegant wines. In 2004, Mo was able to unveil the potential of his land by producing a wine from the vines he meticulously planted and cared for. The results proved to be flourishing, providing bright fruit and unique complexity, creating an elegant Pinot Noir. Ayoub is committed to producing a limited amount of Pinot Noir of the highest quality.

Dundee Hills has earned an internationally recognized reputation for producing high quality New World Pinot Noir. Winters are mild and wet, while summers are warm and dry, each being influenced by the marine air from the Pacific Ocean. The Coast Range mountains protect the valley from the ocean and act as a rain shadow to minimize the rainfall as it moves from the water to inland. The climatic influences provide the perfect opportunity for the fruit to develop with full character and flavor profiles.

The Ayoub Vineyard is located in the heart of the red hills of Dundee. It is farmed by hand with great respect and care for the land, vines and natural surroundings. The steep sloped southeast-facing four acres site, with its red clay volcanic soil, is ideal for producing high quality Pinot Noir. It is densely planted resulting in low-yielding vines to increase the flavor of the fruit.

Chardonnay

The Chardonnay Grape

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

Dundee Hills

Dundee Hills Winegrowers Association website

Located just 28 miles southwest of Portland, and 40 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean, the Dundee Hills appellation is situated within an irregular circle of about 6,490 acres in total, of which more than 1,264 acres of vineyards are planted. This region is unique for its higher elevation, warmer nighttime temperatures, less low-elevation fog and frost, and lava-based Jory soil series of reddish silt, clay and loam soils.
