Tasted by Un fils d'un Chevalier on 4/20/2021 & rated 94 points: Astonishing. Upon readi the reviews I was urged to open my last bottle of 6. Cork holding up very well and would last another ten years. Decanted one hour. Burnished mahogany colour. Nose overflowing black cherry conserve, beeswax with rich honey, hints of gardenia. High alcohol evident in mouth, sears slightly. Palate of sweet cherries and raspberries, slight ox blood, leather, thyme, powdery tannins like fine dust on a hot forest road. Very long sweet finish, mouth left coated with sweet soft tannins. Wine is resplendent. (1098 views)
Tasted by robmatic on 11/26/2020 & rated 88 points: This bottle was a little bit tired, with significant bricking and a pruney aspect. Still drinking ok, but definitely time to drink up. (1206 views)
Tasted by Collector1855 on 6/13/2020 & rated 90 points: Zoom blind tasting. Nose of dark fruit with some dried fruit and garrigue. On the palate despite its alcohol it felt the lightest in this CDP/Amarone flight, tannins a touch rustic though. Unfortunately it maderized quickly in the glass. Late maturity, drink up. (2366 views)
Tasted by robmatic on 3/21/2020 & rated 91 points: Sure, there is noticeable alcohol in this, but apart from that I don't see what the heck everyone's problem is with it. Very tasty juice that oozes character. In spite of the alcohol, we drank it all up without ill effect. Lovely wine, just not for everyone. (1453 views)
Tasted by latimer on 12/26/2019 & rated 75 points: Getting somewhat bricky colour. Nose is pretty awful and palate worse, in fact we all found it undrinkable. 16% is way too much. Very odd as before it we drank the Beaucastel 2004 which was 14% and quite good. the Chapoutier is totally out of balance and we'll use it to make a sauce. What a waste. Biodynamic selection parcellaire? what went wrong..?? (1444 views)
Tasted by Derek Darth Taster on 8/30/2018 & rated 89 points: Drank over 2 hours. At home.
Deep ruby with garnet edge. Nose medium+ intensity, with aromas of smelly forest floor earth, animal, dark soy sauce, chocolate, ferrous minerality, stewed dark red cherries. Developed.
On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, high alcohol (16%), smooth starting fully integrated high tannins with a lingering pucker, full body. Medium flavour intensity, with flavours of savoury forest floor earth, dark soy sauce, ferrous iron minerality, meat, stewed dark red cherries, black pepper spice. Medium flavour finish, then showing the alcoholic heat thereafter.
Complex, aged CdP. Nice savoury earth and meat. But balance is lacking. Too alcoholic, and overall becoming a bit soupy. Fruits too stewed. Time to drink up already. (1404 views)
Tasted by texanoblues on 11/6/2015 & rated 79 points: Red with prominent orange/amber hue and clear in the glass. Quite a bit of very fine, mud-like sediment remained at the bottom of the bottle. Raisin, fig, anise, and celery notes on the nose and palate. HOT, black pepper finish. In fact, the alcohol (16%) created a burning sensation in the nostrils, mid-palate, and finish. Ruined what otherwise could have been a very nice wine.

No reason to hold this one, and unfortunately, not much of a reason to drink either. The remainder of this bottle will serve to make a nice (albeit costly) marinara sauce. Just need to be sure to cook off all the alcohol. (2774 views)
Tasted by Jeffrey Silver on 7/11/2015 & rated 90 points: Lovely CDP with 2hrs of air. It's very smooth and full of vanilla and caramel mocha. They overwhelming fruit is deep red lush Strawberry. I would think this wine will put on more weight in the coming years. Give it another 4-6yrs and it will be firing on all cylinders. (2696 views)
Tasted by Miceri on 2/5/2015 & rated 91 points: Rusty red color; quite muted nose, some subtle hint of licorice; lean attack, heavily spiced, lots of pepper, very masculine, pronounced tannins; quite overwhelming, thankfully not jammy, quite expressive; will it be more quiet in a few years? Very "forward" right now (2884 views)
Tasted by kanjimoti on 11/18/2014 & rated 90 points: Nice cloudy, rusty red appearance to the '04 Barbe Rac. The nose is a carnival of aromas including barbecued meat, nail polish, poultry broth, celery salt, and mashed, overripe cherries. There's tannin on the palate which surprises me considering the ripeness here. Perhaps ripeness and lack of tannin don't go hand in hand. Amazing just how much there is to learn about wine. The palate doesn't excite me nor does it really let down after that dynamic nose. It feels tired for some reason but is hanging on. Was it super hot in Chateauneuf in '04? Time has given the '04 Barbe Rac some added complexity though I can't help but feel this is six months past its prime. In other words, drink now. (3159 views)
Tasted by robmatic on 11/6/2014 & rated 90 points: Very tasty juice, yes, with notably high alcohol that would ordinarily bother me, but this bottle was rather seamless and velvety. Very good food wine, and I can see how it might not give a great impression in a pure "tasting" environment. Lush, spicy, herbal, and solid fruit all integrated into a nice package. (3021 views)
Tasted by Yiannis on 10/20/2013 & rated 91 points: On the nose, this is rather restrained, but on the palate it is full-bodied, warm (16% alcohol), rich and spicy. Tannins are quite firm yet juicy, and the acidity is sufficient to offer balance despite the huge alcohol level and high extract. Aftertsate is long. Drink now and over the next decade. (2312 views)
Tasted by Niagara on 5/17/2010 & rated 82 points: Alcohol on the nose, on the palate, on the finish. Way out of balance. (3647 views)
Tasted by balassis on 2/2/2010 & rated 88 points: Light and transparent ruby, with gray hues.
Lot of alcohol on the nose, licorice, wood and minerals.
Med-bodied with medium acidity and vibrant tannins.
Flavors of plums, raisins, oak, licorice and spices.
Not as exceptional as expected.
Finaly, not my cup of tea...
To pair with roast pork. (3711 views)
Tasted by brewking on 1/24/2010 & rated 89 points: nice light wine, with cola and smoke (3625 views)
Tasted by Stefanos T. on 10/15/2009 & rated 86 points: Excessive alcohol is the problem with this wine. Black cherries in alcohol a peppery aftertaste, but this wine is a bit too much for me. (3149 views)
Tasted by Alex H on 11/30/2008 & rated 85 points: Denise Annual Wine Fiesta (Duxton Hill): Slightly gamey with almost malt whisky aromatics. Beautifully scented. Dainty sweet flowers! on the palate with licourice and some spices. Indulgent and lovely style. Quite elegant. (4643 views)
Tasted by Niagara on 9/1/2008 & rated 85 points: At 16% ABV, the alcohol is overpowering and further sweetens what is already a very round wine. (2861 views)
Tasted by wineismylife on 11/23/2007 & rated 90 points: SWILL November Tasting - Southern Rhone (win's house in Southlake, TX): WIML90

Tasted November 23, 2007. Opened and served immediately. Garnet to dark garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Jammy nose of mixed red fruits, a hint of cocoa powder and some soft brown spices. Flavors of red licorice, rich red berries, strawberries and Bing cherries. Bright acidity, firm tannins, full body. Quite distinctive. Hold. (4274 views)

M. Chapoutier Châteauneuf-du-Pape Barbe Rac

Barbe Rac
Selection Parcellaire / Single Vineyard
Biodynamically grown certified

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red "Barbe Rac"
10 acres, 100% Grenache

This vineyard is littered with the famous "galets" or pudding stones characteristic of the area, but in reality the subsoil is far more important - quaternary terrace, with a complex and varied mixture of red clay and ferruginous sand. The vines are the oldest Châteauneuf-du-Pape vines in existence (about 90 years old age). This unique hilltop vineyard West of the village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape makes some of the silkiest and most elegant wines in the region. Its biodynamic culture ensures the low yields (15-20 hl/ha) necessary to create a pure and intense Grenache-only wine. Late picking develops exotic aromas in this very well-built and long flavoured wine.

Grape variety
Grenache. 90 year old vines

Soil
Quaternacy terrace with a surface of shingles coming from the former bed of Rhône. The plot producing this single vineyard has a complex and various geological composition.

Harvesting
The grapes are carefully selected during the harvest. This sorting is compulsory and allows the selection of the best brunches of grapes.

Vinification
In vats made of concrete covered with epoxy resin as Grenache is sensitive to oxidation. The grapes are 100% destemmed, fermentation lasts about 3 weeks at a temperature which varies from 30 to 33° C. Only the free-run juice is used in this single vineyard.

Maturing
Ageing in vats for 14 to 16 months. Then 6 months ageing in bottle.

Tasting

Colour : Intensive garnet

Nose : Herbacy, spices (liquorice), chocolate, fruits (strawberry)

Palate : Ample, fleshy, hot and round. Outstanding density with an impressive length.

Ageing potential: +25 years

Matching food
All kind of meat. Large game. Stew

Closure
Cork

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
