| Community Tasting Notes (average 92 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 10 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by D'Yquembe Mutumbo on 6/10/2022 & rated 92 points: Just a lovely wine, fully open after an hour in the decanter, showing everything that is lovely about CdP. Garrigue, dark berries, clay, assertive minerality. This is a strong buy under $100 right now if you like this style. (897 views) | | Tasted by Andice on 12/30/2020 & rated 93 points: This is so good tonight. Great improvement over last bottle 2 years ago. Delicate minerality really shines through. Perfumed notes of red flowers, almost cote rotie like. Palate is light for CdP and almost resolved with just a tiny tannic bite at the end. Enjoyable (1450 views) | | Tasted by Wine Warrior 1 on 3/26/2020 & rated 93 points: Dark garnet color with terroir on the nose. Light body with blackberry, dark cherry, tar, and spice. Extremely balanced from front to back with a nice lingering finish. Tannins are there but so balanced with the fruit they become an after-thought. After an hour, a touch of red fruit becomes noticeable. Pretty wine with nice age -ability. I wouldn't be surprised if it lasted 10 more years. (1728 views) | | Tasted by bablues on 12/19/2019 & rated 93 points: Had a 2013 Rhone old world vs. new world with the Barbe Rac going up against the 2013 Saxum Heart Stone. The Barbe Rac was much lighter in color as well as the flavor profiles. I really liked it, but just no match for the Saxum on this night. (1674 views) | | Tasted by wernicke on 11/4/2019 & rated 85 points: Cannot compete as a CDP with janasse, clos, beaucastel etc. Can be safely ignored if this bottle is represenatative (1830 views) | | Tasted by Jeff Leve on 9/7/2015 & rated 92 points: Earthy, with a smoky, thyme and cherry note that stands out, the wine is silky, soft and polished with freshness and sweetness to the fruit. The wine is made with 100% old vine Grenache. (4257 views) |

Barbe Rac Selection Parcellaire / Single Vineyard Biodynamically grown certified Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red "Barbe Rac" 10 acres, 100% Grenache
This vineyard is littered with the famous "galets" or pudding stones characteristic of the area, but in reality the subsoil is far more important - quaternary terrace, with a complex and varied mixture of red clay and ferruginous sand. The vines are the oldest Châteauneuf-du-Pape vines in existence (about 90 years old age). This unique hilltop vineyard West of the village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape makes some of the silkiest and most elegant wines in the region. Its biodynamic culture ensures the low yields (15-20 hl/ha) necessary to create a pure and intense Grenache-only wine. Late picking develops exotic aromas in this very well-built and long flavoured wine.
Grape variety Grenache. 90 year old vines
Soil Quaternacy terrace with a surface of shingles coming from the former bed of Rhône. The plot producing this single vineyard has a complex and various geological composition.
Harvesting The grapes are carefully selected during the harvest. This sorting is compulsory and allows the selection of the best brunches of grapes.
Vinification In vats made of concrete covered with epoxy resin as Grenache is sensitive to oxidation. The grapes are 100% destemmed, fermentation lasts about 3 weeks at a temperature which varies from 30 to 33° C. Only the free-run juice is used in this single vineyard.
Maturing Ageing in vats for 14 to 16 months. Then 6 months ageing in bottle. Tasting

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
