Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.2 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 26 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by coremill on 4/15/2023 & rated 91 points: 51% Merlot, 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc, 13.7% ABV. Full of black cherries, mint and sage, earth, a hint of bitter chocolate. Still rich with plenty of fine tannin, almost lush but with a certain mountain austerity that relaxes with food. Has held up beautifully from an unheralded vintage. (471 views)
Tasted by Milos on 1/13/2023 & rated 92 points: Lunch wine at Bymark. Drank together with 1993 La Jota Cabernet. This one showed well from the first sip. Forward nose of cherry and strawberry with mineral notes and just a touch of cedar. The palate is completely resolved but not without structure. It put on more and more weight over the two hours we drank it, but always showing balance leading to a decently long finish. Not a powerful wine, but very satisfying. (567 views)
Tasted by rbrater on 2/4/2022 & rated 92 points: Wow. Lots of life left in this one. Stewed cranberries, prunes, and still some tannins left. (835 views)
Tasted by short and confused on 8/4/2021: The first pricey bottle of wine I purchased when I was just starting to learnabout wine. I loved it way back when. I was surprised that it has stood up well. I would not say that I love it now but it is still alive and it is well made. At 28 years old- it is still got some vibarncy on day 2! (1260 views)
Tasted by RockinCabs on 7/24/2020 & rated 92 points: Opened and allowed this to slow ox for about an hour and then consumed over about 4 hours.

Nose: Gorgeous nose of red plum, black raspberry, sage, leather, spearmint and cocoa.. Evolves and cbanges beautifully. Palate: Begins mid weight and translucent with bright red cherry, plum, raspberry, cocoa and fresh herbs. Mineral and earth undertones so typical of this side of the mayacamas mountains. Gains weight and layers as the wine opens. Evolves to show plum, mint, blackberry, cherry, slight spice and coconut oak. Finish: detailed and long with raspberry fruit and herbs.

Beautiful merlot leading blend that has the red fruited vibrancy of certain vintages of Palmer yet is so classically CA. Old bordeaux lovers will enjoy this. 13.7% ... low alc CA wins again. (1394 views)
Tasted by srh on 6/28/2019: Friday Tasting Group: "Killer Bar" (#03 for me): "New World" Theme (Vintage Wines Ltd., San Diego, CA): 51% Merlot, 44% C.S., & 5% C.F.

N: Slightly closed; Ripe, TOUGH to parse; Intensity lurking

P: Med, poss LM, body; RNDISH enty with very NICE, ALMOST swtish frt met by some astringent pucker which NEVER loses touch with the frt as it seamlessly evolves into a LONG, ELEGANT finish with an attractive, tangy/swtness to the firming, dusty tannins. Would be sensational with food right now, + I can see it approaching its 35th. 13.7% ABV; My Exceptional-/Exceptional (96-100/100 on that scale). (1441 views)
Tasted by Tannic Monster on 1/24/2015 & rated 91 points: Very bricky in color. Medium bodied with soft velvety tannins. Classic Meritage flavors of dark fruits, leather, cherry, and vanilla.
Considering it is over 50% merlot it has held up amazingly well. Great juice. Drink up. (2213 views)
Tasted by WineAggregate on 7/20/2014 & rated 91 points: This has held up far better than I could have hoped. Rich, ripe, plum and smoke, and was even better the second day once all the parts came together. Last bottle. Not hugely complex but very interesting evolution. (2269 views)
Tasted by blanquito on 2/16/2014 & rated 88 points: Interesting scents of bubblegum, medicinal mint, iodine, black cherries. There's a big slug of spicy, minty fruit. Soft, a little flabby, more definition and acid would really help, but this has held up and offers nice, unchallenging drinking. (2320 views)
Tasted by WineAggregate on 2/14/2012 & rated 92 points: Ripe, soft, rich aromas of vanilla and plummy fruit. On the palate it had odd notes at first, of not-so-pleasant barnyard and a funny chemical, but these blew off quickly after a little airing. It smoothed out into a beautiful, fully mature, balanced wine, with good merlot character and just a hint of overripeness. I'm surprised it's as good as it is at this point. (3045 views)
Tasted by kenv on 2/24/2011 & rated 91 points: Mellow, mature-Bordeaux-like nose of cedar and autumn leaves. In the mouth, dried red fruit and spice. Medium length. Lovely wine, but drink up. (3103 views)
Tasted by 1800kidney on 12/31/2010 & rated 92 points: New Years 2011 at Pickberry (Pickberry Vineyard): Lovely effort, served at the source in a Magnum format! The blend in 1993 was 51% merlot, 44% cabernet sauvignon and 5% cabernet franc. The alcohol is a manageable 13.7%. Mouthfeel is lovely, great balance between the merlot and cab. Stemminess not an issue. Complex and engaging, long finish, great balance (3011 views)
Tasted by Oskiwawa on 11/27/2009 & rated 92 points: Outstanding. Decanted for two hours which was about right. Lots of good fruit with soft tannins and a nice dusty bordeaux like palate. This wine should hold well for at least five more years. Last of my two bottles. Wish there were more. (2533 views)
Tasted by WineAggregate on 4/26/2008 & rated 91 points: Still young, tannic, sharp oak and rich fruit, very nicely delineated. Ready but still has several years. (2088 views)
Tasted by 1800kidney on 9/21/2007 & rated 92 points: Different source, but doing just fine. Complex, showing its nearly 15 years quite well, thank you. Tannins are softening, but this has another 10 great years ahead. See previous notes. (2500 views)
Tasted by shine on 4/23/2007 & rated 91 points: Full aroma with plenty of fruit. Tastes full will very soft tannins and nice mouth feel. Medium enjoyable finish. Tastes younger than I would have expected. (2218 views)
Tasted by Vino Me on 4/11/2007 & rated 88 points: Opened at Haggis aloha party. This 14 year old Bordeaux blend had a solid red color for being as old as it was. Still had a nice core of fruit with berry notes dominating. Some peanut flavors on the finish. Very interesting. Held up very well. 88 points. (2177 views)
Tasted by Haggis on 2/10/2007 & rated 90 points: Wonderful balance of raspberry, red currant, saddle leather. Some acidity, combined with tannin, makes this a wine that is still drinking well. I would definitely drink ths wine now, as I think it has no more than 2-3 good years left...if that. (2324 views)
Tasted by jmd60611 on 10/16/2006 & rated 91 points: Drinking very well, this wine started out a bit round without much of a backbone, but 30 minutes later was drinking with balance and structure (2447 views)
Tasted by 1800kidney on 8/5/2006 & rated 93 points: Napa/Sonoma Events; 8/2/2006-8/5/2006 (Various Venues): Great depth and complexity, tannins are now in their place. The blend in 1993 was 51% merlot, 44% cabernet sauvignon and 5% cabernet franc. The alcohol is a manageable 13.7%. Mouthfeel is lovely, great balance between the merlot and cab. Stemminess not an issue, this has really come alive, and is at its prime. Did better than the 1992 (4111 views)
Tasted by jmd60611 on 4/10/2006 & rated 90 points: Good to great wine, this seemed a bit thinner than the blockbuster that I had this summer, but still great juice (2717 views)
Tasted by 1800kidney on 3/19/2006 & rated 92 points: Great depth and complexity, tannins are now in their place. The blend in 1993 was 51% merlot, 44% cabernet sauvignon and 5% cabernet franc. The alcohol is a manageable 13.7%. Mouthfeel is lovely, great balance between the merlot and cab. Bit of stemminess in the finish, more cabernet franc than I remember from the last tasting 16 months ago (2831 views)
Tasted by winefool on 3/1/2006 & rated 93 points: Deep opque crimson red with some sediment. Lovelyrich briar graphite nose. Nice big fruit slightly sour red fruit. Screams bordeaux! 3/06 (2297 views)
Tasted by 1800kidney on 12/30/2004 & rated 92 points: Though more merlot than cab, the finish is chewy and has noticeable tannins. Great depth to the fruit, good for another 5 years (3270 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
