From a magnum this was drinking exceptionally well. Resolved tannins, tertiary flavors bit still has dark red fruit. Very long finish. (327 views) | | Tasted by crcarlson on 11/19/2023 & rated 92 points: sound, cork sealed in great shape opaque minus, ruby center toward garnet rim Blue fruit, mint, menthol, tobacco, bell pepper, earth, cedar acid plus, hint of VA, in balance alcohol plus Acid is vibrant on the palate with cassis, plum, cedar No sediment in the bottle Fine polished tannin Drink now, the fruit and tertiary flavors in harmony Drinks almost old world (414 views) | | Tasted by Michigan Mostberg on 10/23/2023 & rated 93 points: Opaque ruby color, singularly dark dark plum nose. Not rich or oaky, showing perfectly balanced black fruit and a refreshing touch of green tannins. I'm drinking these now, but plenty of life left to suit your taste/purpose over the next 5 yrs. (537 views) | | Tasted by Skymech on 12/3/2022 & rated 93 points: Wine shows no visible age at all - deep red, no bricking at all. Nose actually doesn't show much. A little fruit and earth. The palate, though, is terrific. A mix of blackberry with some red fruit and even some fresh, tart acidity. This nearly 20 year old wine is still in its prime and even shows some young notes! I swear, this almost tastes like a Kosta Browne Pinot Noir, which I was not expecting at all.
I had the 2003 Howell Mountain last year, and it was deeper with significantly more blackberry and no notable acidity. It was definitely superior to this, but I'm extremely pleased with this wine. It has years to go - at least a decade. (1291 views) | | Tasted by awilliamson4 on 12/6/2021 & rated 95 points: years left on it (2300 views) | | Tasted by Seth Rosenberg on 8/3/2021 & rated 91 points: Cork looked good but it fell apart when I tried to pull it with a regular corkscrew. Ended up pushing about half in and pouring a glass w a strainer. Nice nose of soft plummy fruit - with some cassis and blackberries. Also a green herbal note along with some baking and xmas spices. Very welcoming but seems a bit out of focus to me - I'm used to my Dunn's having more definition and grip. Enters a little bitter and dilute. Flavors are similar to those of the nose - dark red-black fruits and herbal/green, but the intensity is less and still lacking definition. Soft with fine resolved tannins, the finish has some minerals and herbal notes but again, is missing some oomph. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 4.5/6, Finish - 4/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 0.5/2 = 14/20.
Day 2: I poured the remaining 60% of the bottle from day 1 into small bottles to try over the next few days. The wine has improved. It's filled out some - the nose is deeper, and the palate has as well, and it has come into focus as well. The nose shows some graphite in addition to the smells of day 1 and it's spicier. The palate is spicier as well - the flavors are better defined so the combination of them is more complex and nuanced. The finish has filled out a bit but is still the weakest link. Still, nice to see this come together after a poor initial showing. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 4.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 15.5/20. (2640 views) | | Tasted by KarpeDiem on 12/20/2020 & rated 92 points: Absolute testament to what a great producer can do in an off year. 17 years in, and this wine is still holding on. Nose, body, and finish are all intact. Would def drink now if you have any left. (2521 views) | | Tasted by pdadams66 on 6/6/2020 & rated 91 points: As before. Aging very well. (2719 views) | | Tasted by pdadams66 on 3/25/2020 & rated 91 points: Deep dark center, red rim with signs of age. Sweet briar, crushed stones, blackcurrant, raspberries, some Szechuan pepper. Smooth and sweet, wonderful blackberry and blackcurrant, black olives, toasted oak, ash, dust, great finish with some slight greenness. Great Dunn. At a peak. (2324 views) | | Tasted by guitarguy on 1/26/2020 & rated 92 points: Peaking, a mature but still rich blueberry, herbs and mint with nice sous bois and smoke notes in the nez. (1986 views) | | Tasted by jhw425 on 7/30/2019 & rated 89 points: Tasting older than just about any other Dunn I have had. Good on day one but would have picked it for a fully mature Bordeaux. Kind of tired day 2. Unusual vintage for Dunn (2041 views) | | Tasted by guitarguy on 7/26/2019 & rated 92 points: I think this is good and as good as it will be. Blue fruit and volcanic ash lead the nose into blueberry, oak. A slight short on the finish keeps this from closer to classic (1773 views) | | Tasted by bestdamncab on 5/3/2018 & rated 92 points: Nose of black cherry, black berry, boysenberry, and plum, same on the palate, medium/big body, tasty, at its peak so time to enjoy your cellar efforts, mouth filling fruit, tannin are resolved, almost elegant, and a long finish. (2816 views) | | Tasted by guitarguy on 3/1/2018 & rated 91 points: A nice fresh wine for its age, plenty of blue fruit with a bit of skunk, ample tannin, blueberry with cranberry and limited lift in the nose. Ready to go. (2455 views) | | Tasted by Diane (LI) on 7/23/2017: Can you imagine a delicate Dunn? Black cherry, soft tannins, and a long finish. My one and only Californina Cab from 2003 and it is lovely. (3326 views) | | Tasted by Redteeth on 9/25/2016: This bottle had significant sediment and was slightly over the hill. In my opinion - time to decant and drink up. (3923 views) | | Tasted by Quiet Lion on 9/23/2016 & rated 93 points: Rich, earthy, rustic. Plenty of life left. (3832 views) | | Tasted by Cliff Booth on 8/14/2016 & rated 93 points: PnP; modest nose of cherry, violets and a touch of spice. The palate, on the other hand, begins as a perfect blackberry and ends in violet/plum mystery. Resolved, balanced and pleasurable - drink up! (3189 views) | | Tasted by npettit on 7/16/2016 & rated 94 points: This wine is drinking very well right now and needed little time to open up. Nicely balanced and smooth. Wish I had more than 1 bottle left! (3138 views) | | Tasted by rwstorer on 11/27/2015 & rated 93 points: - Ruby color with medium forming legs and aromas of cherry and chocolate. It's balanced and has flavours of cherry with a medium body. Smooth texture with a long finish - Really comes alive after a 2 hour decant. A beautiful wine showing pencil lead, chocolate and a pure cassis liqueur. We loved this wine (3222 views) | | Tasted by pauljenson on 10/18/2015 & rated 95 points: Absolutely phenomenal! This wine is at its prime!! Has some dark chocolate undertones with pencil lead shavings on the nose. Palate bursts with black fruits and dark cherry. Finish goes on for at least a minute. Brilliant! (2773 views) | | Tasted by paulst on 12/31/2014 & rated 89 points: Earthy and light blackberry; tannic; nice finish. (3814 views) | | Tasted by jkenyan on 12/14/2014: Velvety smooth. Medium bodied. Went well with lamb at CG. (3453 views) | | Tasted by stevenjstein on 10/19/2014 & rated 94 points: Showed really well against some other vintages of Dunn Howell Mtn. and Napa (3691 views) | | Tasted by gejohnston on 9/5/2014 & rated 90 points: Took to a restaurant, popped and poured. Still young and needs more time. Will be much better in a few years. (3328 views) | | Only displaying the 25 most recent notes - click to see all notes for this wine... |
| Dunn Vineyards Producer websiteCabernet SauvignonCabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.
Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet SauvignonUSAAmerican wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.California2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson Napa Valley Napa Valley Wineries and Wine (Napa Valley Vintners)Napa ValleySt. Helena |
