Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.3 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 73 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by RockinCabs on 4/30/2024 & rated 91 points: Classic sauv blanc with honeydew melon, kiwi, lime and some grassy notes. However where this is special is in the aged notes that have been imparted at this point. Lemon oil, cured citrus and kiwi are all on display and there is an added viscous texture to the wine. A really nice glass of Cali SB. (81 views)
Tasted by buckeye76 on 1/19/2024 & rated 92 points: Last bottle of the 2016 Sauvignon Blanc, all with somewhat consistent notes. Still a perfect match with Chinese and drinking very well. Citrus, floral and mineral notes in the nose and flavor. Nice structure and acidity, well balanced, medium bodied and a medium length finish. (199 views)
Tasted by oldwines on 5/27/2023 & rated 92 points: Light to medium yellow with a green tinge. This is a pretty classic Sauvignon Blanc with aromas and flavors of grassy grapefruit, orange peel, thyme and a minty element. The grass notes faded with air. Bright acidity makes it very food friendly. There is a bitter element that for me is typical of the “grapefruit flavor” in the mid-palate and on the finish, which to me is a distraction that some others might like. Better with more air with a rounder and more luscious mouthfeel. Definitely one of the better Sauvignon Blanc’s made in the USA in my opinion, realizing that comes from someone who is not particularly fond of the grape. (555 views)
Tasted by buckeye76 on 5/7/2023 & rated 92 points: Similar notes as last tasting five months ago. Lots of citrus in the nose, lemons and lime with hints of floral and minerality. Very similar flavor as the nose. Nice structure and balance. Medium bodied and a medium to long finish. (279 views)
Tasted by konadog on 3/19/2023 & rated 91 points: Has mellowed and nose is lychee and cantaloupe. Acidity has diminished but still very enjoyable with grilled salmon and chili crisp (333 views)
Tasted by buckeye76 on 12/15/2022 & rated 92 points: Lots of citrus in the nose, lemons and lime with hints of floral and minerality. Very similar flavor as the nose. Nice structure and balance. Medium bodied and a medium to long finish. (420 views)
Tasted by konadog on 5/30/2021 & rated 91 points: Papaya nose with peach and lime zest notes on palate (1542 views)
Tasted by BastardMontrachet on 11/30/2020: Väldigt fin balans med viss oljighet men ändå floral med en mineral saltighet i finishen. Riktigt gott! (1617 views)
Tasted by bugdoced on 11/15/2020 & rated 90 points: settled down nicely and in a good spot (1439 views)
Tasted by oldwines on 8/29/2020 & rated 92 points: 7th of 8 bottles of wine enjoyed over the afternoon and evening with a small gathering of friends. Specifics are a little vague, but I specifically remember noting how fresh, balanced and citrusy it was without being overly grapefruit and not grassy at all. Really enjoyable as usual and quickly polished off! Plenty of life left (1959 views)
Tasted by Decanting Queen on 4/7/2020 & rated 90 points: This has changed a bit from when I first tried it while visiting Spottswoode in 2017, but still very nice. Lots of boxwood, lemon grass and lime on the nose and palate, mineral finish. Intense flavors. Less ‘creamy’ than previous bottles. I am not a big SB drinker, but this is one of the better ones I have had and I am surprised by some of the more negative reviews. (3127 views)
Tasted by Markie_Sharkie on 2/23/2020 & rated 89 points: Nice golden straw color. Night lemon/lime and citrus flavors. Seemed a bit thin and had shorter finish. Very good but not outstanding. (1405 views)
Tasted by Francophile1 on 1/16/2020 & rated 88 points: Good wine, but simple and left something to be desired. Went great with Sashimi tonight. However, not the great Spottswoode SB that I am used to. (1487 views)
Tasted by redhead6971 on 8/30/2019 & rated 88 points: Color of wheat/yellow with really fast legs. The nose was resplendent with the classic Napa Sauvignon Blanc of lemon/lime, citrus and grapefruit. The palate had some saline, lemon/lime, grapefruit and yellow melons. I felt the acidity to be somewhat lacking and the finish kind of neutral, not rich and enticing. I guess I’m not understanding the long list of 91’s but I’ve had a few Sauvignon Blancs this summer from different regions and was expecting something more from the Spottswoode family. (1695 views)
Tasted by Harley1199 on 6/30/2019: By the glass. The triumph of vulgarity in the form of tropical scents and flavours that clearly wins over the scarce minerality of the flint. At its best just a regular wine.

Por copas. El triunfo de la vulgaridad en forma de olores y sabores tropicales que triunfan sobre la escasa mineralidad del pedernal. En su mejor momento apenas un vino corriente. (1686 views)
Tasted by TMethvin1 on 3/30/2019: Drank with Boyd Wade 2/28/19
Had at Dad’s birthday dinner at the lake 2018
Rated as a 5 (1560 views)
Tasted by R Z on 3/2/2019 & rated 93 points: Grapefruit and lime notes on its own, but this rounded out and was almost burgundian with dinner (pan-fried fillets of fresh flounder and sole with sauteed spinach). From broad experience with this wine going back more than 15 vintages (purchased directly from winery), this is certainly one of the finest sauvignon blancs available (not limited to California), and works well with a variety of foods. (1518 views)
Tasted by ItsNotMe on 2/2/2019: The ‘16 was a different Spotteswoode for me. Strong SV/cat pee which put in closer to a New Zealand SV than what I’ve grown to expect. I am moving on to the ‘17s now. Hope this is just an anomaly. (1556 views)
Tasted by EKass on 1/12/2019 & rated 94 points: Perfect pairing with oysters! (1509 views)
Tasted by tomoem on 10/18/2018 & rated 92 points: CBCC dinner with wine friends. 67' Carruades de Lafite, 86 Spottswoode Cabernet, 98 Vieux Telegraph, 14 Aston Estate PN, 15' GTS Cabernet, 12' Ben Rye. Started with a 16' Spottswoode Sauvignon Blanc.

Really balanced. This wine is neither acidic and mineral driven nor creamy and fruit driven. Make no mistake .... the fruit is there and it is lemon, some candy cane. Really worth finding especially if you are like me and prefer butter driven chard's. (1817 views)
Tasted by gresch on 10/2/2018 & rated 91 points: I am no expert of SBs, though this beat the random one from NZ that I had a couple weeks ago by a longshot.
Had this w/ oysters (PEI & Kumamoto). Drank right out of a previously coravined bottle. I remembered the previous glasses having an almost piercing acidity & not much other personality. Along w/ the lemon & oysters, it expressed a lot more complexity. The last sips showed a nice, rounded & approachable white.
Given that the price point is a *lot* better than for their estate cab, this is probably a good value. (1592 views)
Tasted by Barakahn on 9/19/2018 & rated 91 points: at Mom's for Yom Kippur (1609 views)
Tasted by EKass on 8/3/2018 & rated 94 points: First wine of the night paired with Shigoku oysters (my wife was a champ shucked 40 of these suckers for our dinner) and grilled scallops. Definitely recommend this wine with seafood. Great way to start off the evening. (1712 views)
Tasted by canan on 7/7/2018 & rated 92 points: Excellent SB definition and lovely texture. The intensity is solid and acidity piercing.
Lovely wine but also with a clear touch of oak. (1780 views)
Tasted by Alexander Smith on 6/30/2018 & rated 93 points: Fantastic Sauvignon Blanc, 40% from Napa the rest from Sonoma. Very approachable Sauvignon with notes of tropical fruit, peaches, citrus with good minerality and typical grassy notes. Long smooth finish with just the right amount of oak. Awesome! Drink now or wait a couple of years. Open the night before, this is not a pop and pour. (1612 views)

Sauvignon Blanc

Varietal Character

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson

North Coast

The North Coast American Viticultural Area (AVA) in California, covering more than three million acres, includes Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino and Lake counties, and portions of Marin and Solano counties. (see The Wine Institute for more information)
