| Community Tasting Notes (average 91.7 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 4 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by Tim Heaton on 8/11/2017: Totally consistent with RGCM Gananda's fine note. This wine is still developing, and I think that serving temperature (once it's got 3-4 years of rest - likely to be better) is likely to be paramount to the amount of enjoyment/complexity this might yield. HOLD. 14,5% abv. recommended
https://www.ItalianWine.blog (2962 views) | | Tasted by RGCM Gananda on 5/8/2017 & rated 91 points: Tasted at the winery. Blackfruit and spice notes on the nose. Medium bodied showing a mix of black and red cherry upfront with very nice brightness and good spices and a smoked quality towards the back. However, this wine is even more structured and tannic than the Basarin. Tannins, tannins and more tannins simply overpower virtually everything from the backside on. Might need as many as four years for it to really start to integrate. That being said, it's no shock that these wines need time and generally aren't for early consumption. They will oftentimes reward extended patience handsomely. I felt there was a bit more brightness overall and a bit more fruit complexity to this wine then the Basarin, hence the slightly higher score. How this wine evolves will be key as there's really no drinking them young. (1992 views) |

| Moccagatta Producer websiteNebbioloNebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.
Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.
"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.
Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.
