Community Tasting Notes (average 92 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 83 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by edckim on 12/25/2023 & rated 93 points: Dark cherry fruit, with balance and acidity, earthy, dusty, tar and tobacco leads to a strong finish (334 views)
Tasted by Shanta on 8/8/2023: 06, 07 and 08 tasted on two separate occasions, the 07 our favourite.
2 bottles had a hint of oxidation and overall the wines were for drinking rather than further cellaring. Prodigious amounts of sediment in the 07, less in the others. All three a brickish colour, with a nose of dried flowers, resin, cranberries, mint and other high toned aromatics. Definitely a mature nose. Christmas cake palate carried by along by fresh acidity which sits well with the evolved flavours and aromatics. Great character and interest, super food wine. (650 views)
Tasted by lvjohn on 1/21/2023 & rated 93 points: Very similar notes to the last bottle we drank in October of 2022. This time I wasn't as lucky with the cork. It was a bear to remove and it broke with about 3/4 of it removed. There were plentiful solids to remove too. The wine is still fresh and delicious with excellent flavors of red and dark red fruit. Drank over four days and the last day wasn't it's best. (810 views)
Tasted by jetrexpro on 11/27/2022 & rated 93 points: Charming. All elements in place and fully integrated. Two hours in the decanter and another hour back in the bottle. Two bottles left. (757 views)
Tasted by lvjohn on 10/28/2022 & rated 93 points: Firstly, the cork on this bottle was very long at about 55mm. It was really well planted and took a lot of effort to remove it! It didn't break and seemed fresh as wall The wine was also surprisingly fresh, fruity, and well integrated. There was no off-color to it whatsoever. Be warned that there are lots of solids that should be filtered out. We decanted it about an hour. It reminded me of the wines we tasted at the winery in 2010 where every wine was full and fresh and gloriously presented. (881 views)
Tasted by garryhellmich on 2/27/2022 & rated 93 points: This wine has hit it's peak. Showing great flavors of licorice and tobacco. Drink soon (1156 views)
Tasted by dalemosier on 9/4/2021 & rated 90 points: Really big red, should be drunk with dinner. (1501 views)
Tasted by RGCM Gananda on 6/27/2021 & rated 93 points: Previous bottle was 18 months ago and this wine continues to show at a high level. Black cherry, spices and earth on the nose with light leather and menthol notes behind. Still takes awhile to fully open up (5 hours as opposed to 7), but it's worth the wait. Between medium and full bodied and retains that bright little burst of blackberry and acidity upfront before moving to black cherry. Mid-body shows noticeably more depth than the 2006 from last night and adds darker black cherry and plum notes. Tart black cherry on the backside with tannins that are more fine grained and integrated than in my prior bottle. Still has very good structure, but in better balance with the fruit. Lingering finish of spices, earth, minerals and blackfruits. Overall, between depth, fruit complexity and balance, the 2007 remains a clear step above the 2006 and should drink well over he next few years. (1466 views)
Tasted by Richard P Howden on 4/14/2021: NR. Disappointing stewed fruit, off notes on the nose, short. After several hour decant more stewed. Perhaps corked? Down the drain. (1499 views)
Tasted by lewisrise on 3/20/2021 & rated 95 points: Great tertiary aromas and flavors (1473 views)
Tasted by Vinnut on 8/3/2020 & rated 92 points: Deep dark garnet with a touch of clearing at the edges. Full, forward & fragrant nose of ripe fruit aromas of cherries, strawberries & red currants with overtones of floral notes of roses & earthy/dusty notes, tar, tobacco, minerals, some anise, herbs & a touch of cedar in the background. Medium-full bodied with a very good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, ripe fruit flavors of sweet dark cherries, tart cranberries & red currants with herbs, cocoa, earthy, spices & a touch of oak/vanilla. Long lingering finish. Drinks quite well at present with decanting & airing. Even at 13 years of age, it has the structure & fruit to continue to develop for a few more years. (1647 views)
Tasted by jetrexpro on 6/16/2020 & rated 93 points: After three hours in a decanter just a kaleidoscopic display of fruit earth and minerals. A real pleasure to drink. (1322 views)
Tasted by edckim on 4/25/2020 & rated 93 points: Black cherry, strawberry, clean and balanced, tart acidity, soft and supple, well balanced and structured, with a lingering finish (141 views)
Tasted by dalemosier on 1/21/2020 & rated 93 points: Decanted for 4 hours. Excellent, full bodied, but not over the top. (1572 views)
Tasted by RGCM Gananda on 12/22/2019 & rated 93 points: Prior bottle was exactly 15 months ago and this wine remains in a very good spot. Opened at cellar temperature (55F) and as a result, it was quite tight and actually wasn't showing all that well for 5+ hours. However, once I got it up to room temperature and after 7 hours open, it fully recaptured my prior impressions.

Black cherry, spices, earth, iron and menthol on the nose. Between medium and full bodied with the same general profile of blackberry and black cherry, but they are more rounded now and while not showing as much brightness, there's more balance through the middle. Felt like this 2007 had a bit more density than the 2006 and was a bit more straight-up blackfruit based. The tart red cherry notes show on the backside, along with excellent tannins and acidity. There's still plenty of structure here, certainly enough to suggest that this wine will continue to improve. At the same time the structure notes work really well with the depth of the fruit; they're not harsh or distracting, but very much on the same level as the fruit. I will save my last bottle to drink alongside by last 2006 in late Q4 2020, but might wait for Spring 2021 to try them both on a slightly warmer temperature. (1473 views)
Tasted by oldwines on 12/20/2019 & rated 93 points: An Around the World Introductory Tasting/Holiday Event for a Philadelphia Law Firm (The Union League of Philadelphia): In my cellar since release. Double decanted at 7:30 am then taken to tasting event at 3pm. The wine is a medium to dark garnet with no bricking. Initially this had an effusive nose while decanting, very floral, fruity and earthy. I could smell it clearly while decanting but it shut down almost immediately...needs hours to breathe. Palate has high acidity and high tannin. Very good texture once the tannin dissipates. Lots of cherry, tar and chocolate flavors. The finish is long and has a touch of anise. Needs Food as well as air to be most enjoyable. (1794 views)
Tasted by oldwines on 11/30/2019 & rated 92 points: In my cellar since release. Decanted at 4:30pm and tasted over the next 7 hours. Translucent medium garnet color with little to no bricking. Initially it is lightly floral and spicy on the nose but later more florals like roses and violets along with red fruit and berries and menthol. Looks very viscous for its color (Labeled 14.5% ABV). Palate starts very tannic and tart with bright acidity but by the third hour was much rounder. There is lots of kirsch/cherry, plum, baking spices and some leather. With dinner of some steak the wine was delicious and much richer and soft by comparison. Definitely a wine that needs food. Finish is a bit earthy but not as long as I would like. While I think this will last a good deal longer I think it will be best to drink it over the next 3-5 years (1513 views)
Tasted by Guy Des Rosiers on 11/16/2019 & rated 91 points: Garnet core; bricking at the meniscus. Unlike the last bottle, this one was pretty much PNP'ed. Lovely nose of pipe tobacco, raisin, peach pit, tart cherry and brick dust. Dry; a stunning combination of ripe red fruit and mouth-puckering tannins greets you at the door. The length is long, and everything promised by the nose is delivered on the palate. The dry extract on this wine must be through the roof. This is ripe and bold, yet it screams Nebbiolo. Love it. (1223 views)
Tasted by Guy Des Rosiers on 11/2/2019 & rated 90 points: No detailed notes on this one, but it was a remarkably burly Barbaresco, with party-integrated tannins and beginning to show some promising secondary notes. The wine's color seemed alarmingly evolved when I poured it in into the decanter, but it was fresh as a daisy so I decided to let it sit for over six hours before dinner; the wine showed very well.  Tasted by xuaeinw on 8/31/2019 & rated 92 points: Drinking well, but needs to be decanted. (1191 views)
Tasted by Rebirth22 on 3/17/2019 & rated 93 points: Decanted for a couple of hours. Dry cherry, floral notes a touch of tar. Nice structure and great acidity. (1406 views)
Tasted by twither on 3/1/2019 & rated 93 points: Nice floral nose. A bit grippy, but opened up nicely after an hour, with sweetish red fruit. Medium bodied. (1384 views)
Tasted by rlu on 2/17/2019 & rated 93 points: fantastic wine. enjoyed it very much. no hurry to drink, still enough acidity. mature tannins. (1359 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 2/2/2019: Blind N. Italian at Chevalier: A riper fruit profile that shows mature with pronounced balsamico notes. Good concentration of mature cherry fruit, that again shows maturity/age with balsamico and some earth. Probably more mature than it should be at this point. (1984 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 2/2/2019 flawed bottle: Another Saturday at Chevalier...Mostly Blind Northern Italian Wine (Chevalier Fine Wines - Chicago IL): Blind tasting, small glass, brief note. Something was wrong here. This seemed much other, slightly roasted or cooked. No problems with the cork. (1971 views)

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.
