Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.6 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 101 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by merryberry on 12/30/2023 & rated 89 points: Lots of bricking, with long thin edges. Medium bodied, cranberries, sage, crushed cherries, fully resolved tannins, tons of acid, earth, and a long dry finish. First night nose and taste worried me that I'd waited too long. Second night it was much better, even if the nose was still a bit corky. Drink NOW. (202 views)
Tasted by winepog on 12/27/2021 & rated 91 points: Drinking very well. Improves with air. Give it air. Cheers! (1315 views)
Tasted by winepog on 8/3/2020 & rated 90 points: Seems almost too young. Very primary and direct. I wonder what another 10 years would do. (1765 views)
Tasted by bablues on 7/5/2020 & rated 93 points: simliar to previous tasting notes. Delicious (1851 views)
Tasted by RichardP on 4/26/2020 & rated 90 points: Cherry and red berry fruit, with notes of blueberry, anise, and other savory herbs on the medium finish, with light tannins and good acidity. This is fully mature, although has several years left in it. The Cellartracker drinking window looks too short by three to five years. Although there are other Chateauneufs I prefer in this price range, it was a good value at under $50. (2054 views)
Tasted by dalondra on 3/20/2020 & rated 90 points: My last bottle. A pity as it's got a lot of life left in it. Classical S. Rhone palate, held up well by still quite marked tannins. (1938 views)
Tasted by bablues on 12/14/2019 & rated 94 points: 9th Annual Holiday Dinner and Cellar Raid (Naperville, IL): Part of wine dinner and cellar raid so did not take detailed notes. Probably one of the biggest surprises of the night. Drinking along side some serious wines, this one at a tenth of the price was shining through and providing sheer joy. I loved it (2019 views)
Tasted by Winiac on 1/1/2019 & rated 89 points: Sweet fruit and balanced wine with mature flavors. Medium body and short length and pleasant finish. Crowed pleaser. (1578 views)
Tasted by wmccone54 on 12/7/2018 & rated 92 points: When I last tried this back in October 2010, this was closed down, not showing much fruit, and displaying lots of structure; clearly, it was probably too early to drink. Over the last eight years this has clearly developed and still has both tannin and acidity to support further cellaring. Good mix of black and red fruits, licorice, coffee and garrigue. Nice depth and balance. Long finish. (1537 views)
Tasted by 79bulldog on 11/22/2018 & rated 93 points: Splendid. Opened an hour in bottle and decanted a second hour. Great dividends. Nicely rounded, solid balance. Cedar and spice on the palate with hint of anise on the finish. Really enjoyed this. Drinking great now. Has plenty of bottle life left, but no reason to wait. (1506 views)
Tasted by IlonaN on 7/30/2018 & rated 90 points: Drank with dinner at First & Oak in Solvang. This would have benefited from a good long decant. The last two pours were splendid, with kirsch, roasted herbs and licorice notes. (1810 views)
Tasted by dalondra on 5/19/2018 & rated 92 points: Spicy, peppery, fruity on the palate with a firm finish Drinking perfectly (1996 views)
Tasted by Reblin on 4/28/2018 & rated 92 points: Smooth, balanced. Plenty of fruit remaining (1797 views)
Tasted by ecola on 12/3/2017 & rated 91 points: Developing very nicely. Bright acidity, red raspberry, soft earth on the medium to full body. Smooth tannins and a long finish. (1793 views)
Tasted by dalondra on 2/25/2017 & rated 90 points: Needed 30 mins to open up. Rather bitter at first but developed into a lovely fruity well balanced wine. (2580 views)
Tasted by corkscrews on 1/7/2017 & rated 91 points: A nose of black cherry and spices, dark purple in color. A medium to full bodied Rhone blend, with black cherry, plum, licorice and spicebox on finish, in a great drinking zone. www.winelx.com (2426 views)
Tasted by coreysolman on 9/18/2016 & rated 92 points: Decanted 2 hours - excellent nose of dark/red fruit. Fruit forward on palate with dark fruit, tannins not harsh at all, a little heavier than medium but not full bodied like a big Cali Cab. Very smooth on mid palate and the finish is great with a slightly smoky-ish, peppery finish that lasts 30+ seconds - I enjoyed it with a bone in ribeye and it was actually quite tasty with gourmet black raspberry chip ice cream and gluten free brownies!!! (2616 views)
Tasted by VlgJeff on 3/27/2016 & rated 94 points: Decanted for ~2 hours and was singing. The aromas of red fruits, herbs and earth was almost "heady". Too deep a breath and you might pass out - but with a big smile! The palate was identical, if not a tad more constrained. The tannins were completely resolved, and the acidity put it in almost perfect balance. Can probably cruise at this level for several more years. Perfect complement to the Easter loin of lamb (Charlie Trotter recipe). (3138 views)
Tasted by Johnny C NYC on 3/4/2016 & rated 93 points: This wine is at peak form now. Nose has fully developed (though nose still trails palate in fulsomeness) and the heat of youth has disappeared. Empty your cellars - you won't be sorry. 50/5/13/17/8 (3581 views)
Tasted by WineCPA on 11/10/2015 & rated 95 points: Tar and black fruit across the nose and palate. Still has huge tannins. Excellent for the black fruit and structure. Can go for another decade easily. Next and last after 2020. (2593 views)
Tasted by Cubatobaco on 10/31/2014 & rated 90 points: Solid CdP! I'm sure this has calmed down a bit in the past 8 years as it is velvety on the palate and not as spicy as I was expecting. Decent finish and we'll worth having around for a quiet night with the missus. Cheers! (3452 views)
Tasted by Shaps05 on 10/7/2014 & rated 94 points: Loved it with a nice steak . (3260 views)
Tasted by David_T on 1/14/2014 & rated 87 points: Red cherry/raspberry aromas with hints of herbs/earth. The palate matches: red fruit, a hint of herbs/earth, medium acidity/light tannins. An okay finish but overall I wouldn't hold this much longer. (3877 views)
Tasted by nsellen on 12/31/2013 & rated 92 points: Mid dark with a bit of aging present. Nose of herbs, parma violets and tar. Tastes medicinal, herby, savoury. Fruit is restrained and sweetness limited to the back end. Fine tannins. Long finish. After 3 hours the finish was tea, herbs, camphour and roses. Delicious. (3640 views)
Tasted by gcarl on 12/29/2013 & rated 91 points: Nice floral/fruit notes nose and on palate at P&P, even better an hour later w/dinner of my meatloaf and stuffed twice-baked potatoes. Dessert of my dark, dark chocolate brownies an hour later were complimented nicely with the fruitiness of this wine. I waited 1.5 years since my last tasting. Next one will be within less than 6 months as it is in a nice drinking window for my palate. (3363 views)

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
