Community Tasting Notes (average 91.6 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 11 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by veniceslug1 on 8/10/2018 & rated 91 points: amazingly fresh and young. Beautifully balanced. showed up several wines that were five times as expensive. Nice black fruit, leather, spice. Very good with the steak and truffle flies. (760 views)
Tasted by dsvtec on 10/15/2016 & rated 92 points: Very subtle. Lots of fruit (1180 views)
Tasted by fredb on 4/20/2009: Medium red in the glass. Aromas of dusty cherry, briar, and cinnamon bark. On the palate, this shows creamy cherries, cherry-vanilla liqueur, dust, and some floral notes. Spice and dusty tannins come in on the finish. Medium bodied. Mature and where I like my Ridge zins for primary fruit - still fruity, but integrated. (2947 views)
Tasted by winemaker on 5/23/2008 & rated 92 points: This wine is incredibly smooth and harmonious. It has a nice creaminess, vanilla influence, but no overt sensation of toasted oak. Rich and delicious. Too bad this is my last bottle. (3054 views)
Tasted by guitarguy on 1/20/2008 & rated 90 points: Smooth, well integrated zinfandel. This wine manages to avoid being overtly hot or alcoholic and does not have an unripe greenness that can plague zins. One of Ridge's better efforts in the millenium, the wine is a more of a dark crimson than purple. It has a nose of blueberry, maybe a hint of banana (perhaps a aldehyde, not the most pleasant part of the nose of this wine) and a waft of oak. It smells jut a bit like freshly polished dress shoes. The aldehydes/chemical constituents of the nose do not show on the palate. Fine, well integrated tannins frame berry, cherrry and hint of tar. The wine finish is just a tad short, maybe 15 seconds. Very appealing, especially with a well structured meal such as hamburger, tacos or italian sausage with tomato. I think the wine may have peaked a few months ago so I would put on the consume list for 2008-2009. (3160 views)
Tasted by winemaker on 10/14/2007 & rated 91 points: Drinknig beautifully now. (2712 views)
Tasted by guitarguy on 10/8/2006 & rated 90 points: One of the better efforts from Ridge in the zinfandel area over the last several years. Firm but well integrated tannins, nice classic zin nose. A little hot but pretty good for Ridge recent releases. (2581 views)
Tasted by FeloniousMonk on 10/30/2005 & rated 91 points: Good dark purple color. Reluctant nose of bing cherry.
Mouth was dominated by bing cherry with a hint of black
pepper and a dash of strawberry. Moderate-to-high
tannins suggest that it will withstand a few years of
cellaring. Good stuff for those of us who eschew the
over-the-top fruit bomb style of, say, Turley and Sky. (2226 views)
Tasted by PatLee on 3/6/2004: Barrel tasting at Ridge Lytton Springs. Very floral aromas, smells like fresh roses. Good length and finish. Available only to club members (which I am not), but it looks to be quite nice when released next year. (9723 views)

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
