Tasted by Burgnick on 7/27/2022 & rated 93 points: Honeysuckle, custard and ripe yellow fruit. Good tension and acidity on the palate with the Charmes richness. Another nice bottle. 92-93 (1434 views)
Tasted by BenBlu on 3/12/2022 & rated 92 points: A small glass - very fresh still, extremely pleasant to drink with acidity having mellowed clearly. It was a superb bottle but it didn't have the intensity or complexity for a higher rating. (1447 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 9/4/2020 & rated 93 points: Honeysuckle, carmael and ripe yellow fruit. Rich and ripe on the attack but it has built up acidity in the glass to slim up the baby fat. Good complexity. 92-93 (2143 views)
Tasted by hprphf on 9/4/2020 & rated 93 points: Rich popcorn, white flowers, superb clarity, woody spice, so resolved with good tension. Amazing details and finesse despite a little more golden than the other 90 Lafon recently. 93-94 (1942 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 1/17/2020 & rated 94 points: From an owc. Took a good one hour to fully blossom. Honeysuckle, herbs, flowers and caramelized yellow fruit on the nose in a pungent way. Palate was dense and complexity with soaring acidity. It gained complexity with aeration. 1990 is a vintage Lafon did exceptionally well in. (2461 views)
Tasted by sdr on 11/21/2019 & rated 93 points: Old White Burgundy at Wine Watch (Ft. Lauderdale, Florida): Yes, it’s too old but it’s still sound and very nice. Medium gold color, lovely fragrance. Composed orchard fruit. Even improved in the glass. (1948 views)
Tasted by paul195 on 8/1/2019 & rated 94 points: Mid gold color, some funk on the nose which quickly blew off. This took 30-45 mins to open up and reveal itself. Decent acidity, lovely texture, mature white fruit, surprising minerality, more Perrier than Charmes. Went quite well with the King Crab at Wu’s (1612 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 10/25/2017 & rated 92 points: Took 30 mins to open up its aroma. A great nose with butter, grilled nuts, brioche, and white flower on the nose. Palate is ripe with acidity slowly builds up in the glass with aeration. There are some lovely cane fruit on the palate. Fully mature. Nose is better than the palate, but very enjoyable. 92+ (2273 views)
Tasted by lepetitchateau on 5/23/2017: Second bottle served by a friend ... nope, not good; oxidization and general unhappiness. (2526 views)
Tasted by FYC on 4/7/2017: Not oxidized. Which may be the best thing about it. Very rich with honey and a touch of lemon custard. But lacking acidity and that extra something. (2120 views)
Tasted by sdr on 12/17/2016 & rated 89 points: More vigorous and lively than the '85 but still 5 - 10 years past it's best. There's fruit and honey with an underlying softness of Charmes that's perfectly pleasant but not memorable. (2316 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 8/17/2016 & rated 92 points: Château de Meursault Dinner (The Bristol - Chicago IL): Popped and poured. Very rich and ripe, fully mature. Wonderful concentration with earth and almond butter flavors. Dark color scared me to start, but this was an aged gem. (2539 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 8/17/2016 & rated 91 points: A real treat and peak into aged white burgundy prior to the pre-mox era. The nose here is complex and lifted with mature baked apple, spice, hazelnut and light caramel. Palate has round, soft mature fruit that is showing light oxidation. Interesting and complex, though I'd prefer to drink these a bit younger. (2392 views)
Tasted by sdr on 7/9/2016 & rated 90 points: From the premox era but Lafon at this time was apparently making wines with heavy lees stirring and other techniques that resulted in oxidized wines. Not this one. The cork had no evidence of the telltale blue streaks and came out firmly but not ultra tight. At first the color was medium yellow but quickly evolved into a beautiful mid gold. Very interesting complex scent of apricot, orange peel, hazelnut, honeysuckle and earth. On the palate, rather light, but clean with decent acidity and held up very well indeed for a couple of hours. I quite like it, but it is a bit tired and was probably better 5 - 10 years ago. (1625 views)
Tasted by Paul S on 6/25/2016 & rated 93 points: Dinner at Ming San's (Ming San's): A very classy wine, just perched right in the centre of a good drinking window too. The nose was what I would imagine a typical Lafon Meursault to smell like, with lashings of butter and cream, even a touch of ice-cream soda, then some matured honeyed aromas, sweet pears and yellow fruit, and finally a touch of mineral and spice notes trailing away at the edges. A really complex, matured bouquet. Lovely. The palate was surprising for a 1990 - I could not quite place the vintage when it was served blind. While it had a warm, round generosity of the vintage, it was also fresh and lively, with a lovely clarity showing through its flavours of Chinese pears, honey and warm spices. It was not quite as complex in the mouth as the nose promised, but it was a very nicely drinkable package indeed. A very nice wine at a nice place now. (1888 views)
Tasted by paul195 on 10/8/2015 & rated 95 points: Served 30 minutes after opening, and what a way to start the 6 course chefs menu at Mas. As with the bottle earlier this year, this wine is really drinking at its peak, full bodied, complex, balanced and again after 60 minutes the acidity becomes more assertive and lifts this wine to another level. Really enjoyable (1972 views)
Tasted by lepetitchateau on 3/27/2015: This bottle was very amber in color and advanced on the palate. It shows fine acidity but at the first pour it was screamingly past its prime, very butterscotchy. But, with some time leaving it in the glass it started to really clean up and became decent, quite respectable. (2370 views)
Tasted by paul195 on 2/28/2015 & rated 95 points: Consumed alongside a 1985 Leroy Meursault Genevieres

Medium yellow center with an initially reticent nose. After 30 minutes in the glass the bouquet opened showing a melange of pear, sweet apple, citrus, vanilla.

The mouthfeel was big, rich and luscious with sufficient acidity to keep ones palate engaged throughout its impressive length. Integrated and balanced, this bottle got better and better over the next 2 hours as the acidity became more assertive as the wine moved toward room temperature. Great fruit, texture, breed and complexity, an outstanding wine.

As a side note, earlier in the week I had my last bottle of Lafon's 1989 Meursault, which I purchased from the same source in 1993, it was just delicious, and although somewhat less complex, and far less rich than this bottle of Charmes, it sang its leaner vintage characteristics just as this 1990 reflected its fatter style. A real treat to have had these two wonderful mature Lafons in the same week. (2098 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 3/13/2014 & rated 92 points: La Paulee "Warm-up" Dinner (RN74 - San Francisco CA): Lots of mature stone fruit aromas, equally impressive flavors that come across very powerful and fresh to start, slightly more earthy middle to end. Very enjoyable. Most preferred this slightly vs Martray 92 CC in the next glass, while I slightly preferred the Martray. (3217 views)
Tasted by fclarity on 6/7/2013 & rated 93 points: I bought this bottle at retail about 10 years after release. It was in great shape and I have every reason to believe it was authentic other than the cork read 1990 Lafon Desiree! My guess is sometimes they run out of corks and just start popping in whatever they have.

This wine looked strong with a yellow center and clear rims. The high- intensity nose featured apple, pear, yeast, vanilla, and some almond paste.

In the mouth it was big, rich, and ripe but it also had loads of acidity (after 3+ hours of air) to keep it balanced. It was quite long. The overall impression was one of great richness and weight on the attack but with a zingy, long, white stone finish.

A very interesting wine that was dragged down by an excessive leesey quality in the nose. It is drinking but seems likely to last for another 5 to 10 years. (2895 views)
Tasted by fclarity on 3/3/2012 & rated 94 points: From an excellent looking bottle purchased 10 years after the vintage, this wine had a deep yellow center with clear rims. This time the medium+ intensity nose featured pears, apples, lemon pie, and some vanilla.

In the mouth this was a big rich, wine with racey acidity that gave it impressive length. While one might argue it would need to have a few more mineral elements to be stellar, it would be hard to argue that this isn't an excellent white Burg. This was a great showing, better than when I had it a year or so ago. Of course, it needed the requisite 3 hours of air to show its best. This particular bottle will easily last 5 more years but I don't see it getting a lot better. (3003 views)
Tasted by fclarity on 3/5/2011 & rated 93 points: From an excellent looking bottle, this wine looked a bit darker than I might have expected. The center was deep yellow and were clear just at the rims. The nose was quite rich with lemons, dried apricot, and a hint of oak.

This wine kept getting better and better with air as the apricot notes receded and the acidity developed. This process took over 2 hours. Impressive and rich, this wine is great now with enough air (please don't drink it too soon!). It had great acidity and length.

If this wine had been a little less mono-toned it would have scored higher. While it will last for many years, I see no reason to wait. (2767 views)

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio
