Tasted by oakville72 on 9/8/2023 & rated 90 points: Excellent fill on the bottle and cork in great shape. Good color without much browning. Lots of sediment. A Napa Cabernet that is on the downside but still very good. I'm sure it was a 93-95 at its peak. (345 views)
Tasted by jsteach on 10/24/2016 & rated 95 points: Opened a 5 liter bottle on Sunday, donation which amounted to $460.00. $10.00 for 3 ounces. Shared and drank the rest.

Bottle hard to open, cork came apart, filter and decanted.
Not much fruit to start, aroma or pallet. Plenty of acid, now the waiting game. 1 hour later starting to open up, with lots of mixed berry's, no mid pallet or much of a finish. 1/2 hour more, BINGO !!! Perfection . Much better then the 750 I opened in march . Classic old school Cab, Beautiful nose , Could smell it being poured,
gorgeous mid pallet and long finish. Love Large formats. (3107 views)
Tasted by jsteach on 3/31/2015 & rated 92 points: What a surprise !!! 1980 a poor year for wine. I had quite a few cabs from the 1980 vintage.Mondavi, BV, Diamond creek, Mayacamas, Heitz. This one was the best of the bunch.
The wine looks brick colored. The legs are medium. There is light sediment in the bottle. It smells like blackberry, forest floor . It tastes like blackberry, cherry, dust, forest floor, medicinal, black pepper and eucalyptus. The body is medium. The wine has leathery texture. The wine finishes medium. The wine has medium acidity. BLOWN AWAY !!!!!! (2766 views)
Tasted by DaleW on 10/3/2010: I wanted to try this (I had a load of Cabs handy) because Cellaraiders has it for $25. Lots of herb on the nose, currants, then on the palate a little thin. Not bad, and a decent deal at $25, but now that I’ve had it don’t need another. B/B- (4128 views)
Tasted by bestdamncab on 2/2/1991 & rated 78 points: Aged Cabernet Sauvignon (Walnut Creek, Ca.): 7 Cabernets and Rack of Lamb. Showed a ripe briary cardboard nose and taste with rapidly fading fruit, no saving features, tasted 3 times with virtually the same results recently. My #6. (3032 views)

1980 Burgess Cabernet Sauvignon Vintage Selection

The rainfall was a little above normal and the spring and summer were very cool. Harvest didn't begin until very late, but was warm and short, which caused full and rapid maturity. The wine is approaching a full maturity stage with a bit of tannin still apparent. The fruit demonstrates cherry, tobacco, and a little plum character.

From the winery

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
