Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.5 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 50 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by acyso on 4/2/2024: "There's a lot of fish at Montrose Harbor" (Chicago, IL): Unfortunately, I'm pretty certain that this bottle wasn't representative. It shows quite a bit of maturity, but on the palate, this empties out and becomes quite hollow. Par for the course for Lafon of this era, sadly. (400 views)
Tasted by Shrewsram on 3/6/2024 & rated 92 points: Opened and left in bottle, then cooled again to be brought out later.

Golden appearance but no signs of premox.
Silky and fresh without being especially bright on the nose. Hints of wax and nut, honeycomb. There is a cool freshness and an elegance.

Good volume, some nut and nougat flavour, ginger - burnt biscuit, manzanilla salt and nut on the finish. Feels plenty fresh, nice acidity a little burnt hair/roasted-salted nut length... Elegant and delicate.

On return:
Some light butterscotch to the nose, butter, good lift and freshness. Some alcohol. Barest hint of burnt hair (seems to be getting cleaner as it breathes), cream, mineral pools. Clean.

Palate shows a broad silkiness, a certain voile feel; cool and quite open (hollow?), feels fresh then back to the manzanilla salt/nut thing.

Doing well later, nutty, salty and surprisingly lean, tense in part and airy. (146 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 1/27/2022 flawed bottle: Comtes Lafon Dinner - Blanc et Rouge (RPM Seafood - Chicago IL): Very oxidized. So sad because my past bottle from a few months ago was brilliant. (1806 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 9/23/2021 & rated 94 points: Drinking Some Great Mugnier as an Hommage to Becky Wasserman (Republique - Los Angeles CA): Honeycomb, apple and baked apple aromas and favors. This is not as bright vs the 2002 in the next glass, but more layered and nuanced, continuously unfolding in front of us. It borders on being fat and too ripe, but easily retained it balance and focus for the entire evening. (2271 views)
Tasted by conviction buy on 7/1/2020 & rated 90 points: Another bt from same source, pnp, light golden and pretty fine for the age. Perfumed cool aroma of white flowers, white fruits and hint of spice. Concentrated on palate, really a charm, everything is in balance and refreshing, ending with a tinge of acidity lifted the experience. I could drink this all day. (1627 views)
Tasted by rc@ughey on 12/21/2019 & rated 94 points: WOTN and in a perfect place. Bold and expansive but still shockingly fresh. A total beauty. (2003 views)
Tasted by paul195 on 8/29/2019: NR ... #3 of 6. This bottle was little darker than it should, there some oxidation which in my experience drinking Lafon is premature for this wine. Drinkable but the 2002 Leflaive Bourgogne Blanc drank much fresher and better. The prior 2 bottles from this parcel drank where they should have been when they were consumed but this drank 10 years older than the 1989 Clos du Barre I opened at a birthday dinner earlier in the week where I brought the 99 as the backup. I think this is more of an affected bottle of a 20 yo Charmes than a “premox” bottle. Sad either way (1862 views)
Tasted by liber on 3/28/2019 & rated 75 points: Last of 6, opened 30 minutes, perfect cork and level, fell apart immediately, darkness and orange tinge seemingly intensifying, heavily oxidised and barely drinkable. Poor (11)……..only 1 good bottle in 2013 from 6 and from a producer noted for longevity! (1589 views)
Tasted by conviction buy on 2/11/2019 & rated 91 points: Aroma of wild white flowers and yellow fruits in a light golden hue. Almost painfully concentrated in mouth, steely with good acidity and hint of smoke and spice from mid palate. While personally perfers some fruit sweetness, just can't expect from a Meursault. (1572 views)
Tasted by paul195 on 9/8/2017 & rated 93 points: Medium yellow color, nose somewhat reserved initially but after 15 mins opened up to reveal its charmes -- round ripe hints of apricots and peach. The palate was filled with layers of mature yellow fruit with some buttered toast notes. Good density and texture, nice balance and acidity ending with a persistent finish. A very nice comparison to a more mineral driven 1999 Leflaive Puligny Montrachet les Pucelles (2066 views)
Tasted by sdr on 8/14/2017 flawed bottle: Possibly flawed since rather advanced for its age. Drinkable though, and improves with air. (1909 views)
Tasted by rlove on 7/2/2017 flawed bottle: Oxidized. (1947 views)
Tasted by fatfishzsy on 4/14/2017: 有些氧化,非常可惜,但是矿物质感明显,骨架明显 (2048 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 8/17/2016 & rated 94 points: Preferred this to the '90 tasted side-by-side as it had more freshness/youthfulness of fruit. Full, lifted nose has mature apple, hazelnut, spice and hints of toast. Wow, the palate is where this really shines with mature round fruit and lively fresh acids. There are layers and layers of complex flavor. Fantastic stuff. (2194 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 8/17/2016 & rated 93 points: Château de Meursault Dinner (The Bristol - Chicago IL): Ripe and powerful with lots of ripe fruit still displaying freshness and bright textures. Much better than the last time tasted, but that's Lafon. (2359 views)
Tasted by sdr on 8/13/2016 & rated 93 points: Beautifully preserved bottle from WW from a recent acquisition, full medium gold color; glad it's healthy although obviously fully mature. The bouquet is rather faint and non-descript but on the palate, the wine is powerful and very ripe, yielding musky dark yellow orchard fruits. Dense and persistent finish. Really excellent and just a bit more concentrated than the 2000 Lafon Charmes. (1538 views)
Tasted by burgundylover on 12/11/2015 & rated 89 points: We opened the 2007 Charmes Lafon with this 1999. The 2007 was outstanding (94 pos) but the 1999 has already passed its peak. Not a bad wine at all but the peaks were missing. (2080 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 12/10/2015 flawed bottle: Wines Tasted at HDH Auction; 12/10/2015-12/12/2015 (Tru Restaurant - Chicago IL): Moderately oxidized. Drinkable, but nowhere near the quality level of previous bottles. (2834 views)
Tasted by vinum bonum on 5/10/2015: Splendide. Le vin est complet et complexe, une grosse minéralité. Il peut encore tenir de longues années, mais parfait en l'état. (2153 views)
Tasted by jhngo on 8/22/2014 & rated 98 points: amazingly fresh still. acids mellowed out a little bit but still amazingly racy. (2799 views)
Tasted by paul195 on 7/18/2014 & rated 93 points: Medium straw color, fresh initial impression. Clean fruit with nice acidity, texture and persistence.

After two hours - picked up some roundness and depth, still fresh (2829 views)
Tasted by Johann Von Mastiff on 1/30/2014 & rated 94 points: Its so nice to open a White Burg from the nineties and have it be fresh and delicious. (3006 views)
Tasted by jhngo on 12/30/2013 & rated 94 points: ripe with minerality a more viscous wine. (2817 views)
Tasted by liber on 3/30/2013 & rated 92 points: My fifth bottle of six and at last no premox, mid yellow, pronounced burned butter on nose but attractive chalky minerality both on nose and palate, decent weight and persistence, relatively laid back, should still improve but has it the drive and balance for the long haul (cf Roulot Perrieres 99). Fine plus (18/20). (3373 views)
Tasted by THT on 12/16/2012 flawed bottle: La robe est claire, à peine évoluée. Espoir, espoir
Malheureusement déçu :-( Le nez quasi inexistant augure mal de la suite. La bouche est plate, acqueuse. Pas encore complètement oxydé, mais en bonne voie de l'être. Quelle déception ... (2620 views)

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio
