Introduction

The wine spoke for themselves - very fine stuff indeed across the range. E. Faiveley described changes to the winemaking process in 2006-2007 which he thought accounted for a lot of the silky structure in the 2007s.

    Not bad - good acidity and a long, appetizing, finish with apples and some minerality. But more on the monodimensional side. for 20 bucks there's better stuff out there.

  • 2007 Faiveley Mercurey Clos Rochette Blanc 89 Points

    Marvellous. This is made for drinking now rather than later - and I must confess to have fallen under the spell. a sea of pretty white flowers, nicely integrated oak flavors, some body, great balance and just the utmost pleasure. it sings in my mouth for a long time.

  • 2007 Faiveley Pinot Noir Bourgogne 85 Points

    Cherries and chocolate. Mostly cote challonaise grapes. Somewhat tart on the palate. This is very driven by aromatics and the nose has a lot more to say than the mouth. Decent acidity, light wine. Maybe it needs to rest 2 years more?

  • 2007 Faiveley Gevrey-Chambertin 87 Points

    More than twice the price of the Bourgogne Rouge, I am not sure of the qpr here. but I like this wine. It is a great example of the earthiness and firmly framed wines of gevrey-chambertin. More tannic structures than most of the other 2007s who tend more towards a silky feminine style. Cassis and cherries. Very strong beet flavors.

  • 2007 Faiveley Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Combe aux Moines 93 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

    What a wine! Earthy, almost verging on ashen flavors similar to what you get in a montenebro cheese; great complexity and pinosity. Decent acidity which has already stepped aside to allow this wine to dance in the glass. You could drink it now or save it for later. Soft, fine tannins.

  • 2006 Faiveley Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Porêts Saint-Georges 92 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

    Would never have guessed Nuits-St-Georges. Felt more like Oregon. Blackberries, plum and cassis; medium to full bodied and very very pure fruit flavors. Elegant. Some tannic structures and very well balanced.

  • 2006 Faiveley Corton-Clos des Cortons Faiveley 93 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

    a ripe softness and intensity of fruit defines this wine. I believe this would stand out if compared to almost any 2006 from burgundy. Full bodied and deep; perhaps it is not the most tightly structured grand cru I have ever tasted, but maybe the very fact that it is so approachable and intense in fruit hides some of the frame?

Closing

They know how to price their wine, that's for sure. The mercurey blanc clos rochette 2007 (approx USD 30) and the Bourgogne Rouge Joseph Faiveley 2007 (approx USD 20) were the most convincing values of the night. The 2007 La combe aux moines was probably my WOTN.
