Where the '02 Bienvenues has finesse, this is a power wine. Large scaled, and rich a Chevalier mineral body/honey finish manner. It doesn't have the delineation of the Bienvenues, but it's more complete today. This should maintain in its present state for a few years easily.

Stunning purity, exceptionally crystalline wine that was in many respects more Chevalier than Batard. Signature Ramonet mint on the nose. Superb balance and length. One of the finest young Bienvenues I've ever tasted.

Clunky in its youthful state, I could barely sip it the first 2 hours. Started to unwind a bit, but really in the grand scheme of things just a waste. I can't rate it, and wouldn't want to try it again for a decade.

Horrendously corked. It's never the Villages wine that's corked, isn't it always the Montrachet?

Brownish red color suggesting the wine would be advanced, but the palate had terrific fruit and there were no overtones of madeirization. With time, the wine improved in the glass and became more round and full. A wine that whispered rather than shouted, but had interesting things to say -- classic Vosne spice, fresh fruits, and also some dried fruit and caramel.
It's fair to say this is not your average '82 Burgundy. Worth noting this bottle was bought on release and held by the original owner -- many thanks Bill!

The color suggests barely a hint of age, and the palate is loaded with primary fruit. Perhaps the only indication that this isn't a recent vintage is the fineness of the tannins. But, wow does this have a long, long life ahead of it. Glorious fruit, spice, texture, and finish. Wow wow wow

The oddball of the entire flight, but in a good way. This was the most food-friendly of the wines, with some interesting notes of sage that really complemented various dishes with herbs and vegetables. All the other vintages were for drinking on their own, this one is a food wine. On its own -- not as crazy brilliant as the best of the bunch, but a solid perfomer.

Completely shut down, even after hours in the glass. Bummer, but I can't say I'm surprised. This is a 50 year wine folks, let it rest.

More open than the '99, but still not giving terribly much. I much prefer '00 and '01 for current drinking. That said, there is a tremendous purity here that is very admirable, and I would be delighted to taste this again -- in MANY years. I suspect this one is well on its way to shutting down, and shouldn't be touched for at least a decade.

Surprise of the tasting, this was glorious -- today. In other words, this is an '05 that isn't shut down which is quite unusual at this stage. My suspicion is that this is a wine of such incredible longevity that its entire aging curve is extended, and where most '05's have shut down hard this one has yet to do so. Berries, vosne spice, lavender, and a soft elegance that was remarkable. I don't know how much longer this will be accessible, but I would bet its ultimate lifespan is very, very long.

1988 Piper-Heidsieck Champagne Cuvée Rare
France, Champagne
Pears, nuts, slightly madeirized. Full bodied wine that rounded out with air, and certainly is in no danger of imminent decline.

1990 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut
France, Champagne
Classic wine that is as vibrant as ever. If anything, it's still young -- dramatically improved with air. Bread, pear, honey in a balanced package with great length. Recommended.
