Introduction

Our inaugural tasting was had a simple theme – Pinot from anywhere. I’m a Pinot neophyte so this was highly educational – take my notes with a grain of salt as I’m typically a Bordeaux and Rhone type of guy.

Flight 1 - #1 Wine (1 Note)

  • 2001 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Chambolle-Musigny 85 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny

An opaque garnet red in the glass. Nose of cherry fruit - showed a touch of heat. With some air earthy aromas developed as well. Palate was light bodied though it added some weight over time. More acid than fruit. Ulimately, I didn't care for the light style of this wine.

Flight 2 - #2 Wine (1 Note)

  • 2003 J. Rochioli Pinot Noir Russian River Valley 90 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

Color was dark garnet. Nose was quite forward - plenty of red fruit and new oak notes. In the mouth, full bodied and concentrated. Complex with lush fruit, earth notes and spice. The palate really grips you. Lengthy finish. Definitely new world. My #2, Group's WOTN.

Flight 3 - #3 Wine (1 Note)

  • 2002 St. Innocent Pinot Noir Seven Springs Vineyard 90 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Dark garnet color in the glass. Nice funky aromatic nose. Initially I found this tannic - with the fruit getting overwhelmed. In the glass the evolved beautifully. With red fruit coming out. This needs time in the bottle, but is a very nice wine. My #3 wine, Group's # as well.

Flight 4 - #4 Wine

This was Paul's Pinot Nero and it isn't showing up in CellarTracker. I found this to be simple and just OK.

Flight 5 - #5 Wine (1 Note)

  • 2001 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Chaignots 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

Ruby red hue, but shows some browning. Full bouquet of subtle red fruit. Decidedly less cherry than the Cali wines. Palate was nicely structured. Again fruit was subtle in the mouth. But evolved nicely over the evening. Shorter than I would have liked on the finish. Solid in an understated sort of way. I knew this was Burg as I brought the wine and recognized the foil wrapping.

Flight 6 - #6 Wine (1 Note)

Flight 7 - #7 Wine (1 Note)

  • 2001 Tarra Warra Pinot Noir

Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley

Bleh! This was even spiked with Bordeaux. A surprise wine courtesey of Jim L. Group thought corked. I wasn't sure - but knew this was bad!

Flight 8 - #8 Wine (1 Note)

  • 2001 Domaine Denis Bachelet Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 86 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

Garnet red color. Candied fruit and heat on the nose. Eucalyptis and cherries flavors in the mouth. Gives little on the mid-palate. Shorter finish where I was picking up some oak that didn't have sufficient fruit to integrate with. I guessed Cali. Shows what I know!

Flight 9 - #9 Wine (1 Note)

  • 2003 Loring Wine Company Pinot Noir Garys' Vineyard 92 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands

Thanks to Scott Manlin for donating this wine to the group!

Color was a deep, dark red - almost purple. What a nose! Toasty oak and roasted fruits. Very weighty and forward in the mouth. Totally rockin' with thick dark fruits and mocha. Long on the finish. My WOTN. Group's #4.

Flight 10 - #10 Wine (1 Note)

  • 2002 Archery Summit Pinot Noir Arcus Estate 90 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills

A very dark, dark garnet color. Nose of funk, dark fruit and toasted oak. Forward in the mouth. Lots of fruit, but well structured. Gripping and sharp. A tad drying on the finish - I think the tannins need time to integrate. Excellent wine. Not in my top 3, but very close.

Flight 11 - #11 Wine (1 Note)

  • 2003 Dehlinger Pinot Noir Goldridge 87 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

Ruby red color. Plentiful red fruits on the nose. In the mouth, I picked a good deal of vanilla and toasty oak notes. Brown sugar too. Lacked the red fruits I was smelling and felt a tad out of whack. Though the component parts were individually strong, this never quite came together for me.

Flight 12 - #12 Wine (1 Note)

  • 2002 Radio-Coteau Pinot Noir Savoy Vineyard 89 Points

USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley

Dark, ruby red in the glass. Oaky nose with dark roasted fruits. A bit of cedar in the background too. Palate had nice red fruit - not quite as weighty as the Loring. Just slightly candied. Mid palate was somewhat thin. I'm sure I had palate fatigue by now. Not quite one of my top wines - but could have been a victim of going last!
