Spicy, cedary nose with dark fruit and a big bouquet of fragrant dry herbs. On the palate this is pretty resolved and secondary; cedar, olives, red fruit, spice. Complex, elegant, nice balance. This was a treat to taste such a beautiful and balanced old Nero d'Avola.

Slightly caramel nose, a touch stewy. Lots of old tobacco and iodine show up on the palate but not much fruit. I didn't really care for this and it was vastly overshadowed by the 1994. Seemed pretty tired.

Ah, fleshy and clean with red fruit, herbs, chocolate, tobacco. Youthful, balanced, medium bodied. Outstanding!

Ripe nose, a touch pruney with hints of solvent character at times but a really generous and succulent palate. Extracted, raisiny, richly fruited. A little low in acid and not real developed in secondary characters but a pleasure to drink.

Very open and familiar nose from the 40% Cab Sauv; capsicum, cassis, fragrant mint character. Pretty stout, some wood, mature and elegant. As this sat a distinct brown sugar element came out that was really impressive. A beautiful wine in a great place, though I couldn't tell you what Gaglioppo tastes like...Certainly one of my WOTNs

Slightly funky nose, Bordeaux stink but charming. Dark and extracted but not much else for notes. Good but lost in a sea of greater wines and obviously younger and modern.

Insane nose of spiced olives, fresh oregano, peppercorn, dill emerging. Extracted and young with a herbaceous profile, some plummy fruit. Pretty serious amount of oak showing here, by far the most of any wine tonight. Impressive and fun to drink, if completely different from the southern Italian wines just a few years older.

Big mocha nose, elegant, spice with a big vein of minerality and chalk. On the palate dense, rich, minerals, complex, licorice. Huge finish showing more mocha, vanilla, pepper. From 150 year-old Negroamaro vines vinified with no new oak.

2007 Mandrarossa Fiano Sicilia
Italy, Sicily, Sicilia
Interesting nose because behind the fruits there is a slightly volatile complexity; honeyed solvent gasoline thing I can't quite pin down. It made me anticipate a much richer and sweeter palate. This was too warm so the EtOH really came out over the apple/peach/licorice nose. Very good.

2007 Tenuta Ponte Fiano di Avellino
Italy, Campania, Fiano di Avellino DOCG
Very mineral/stone driven as opposed to the other Fianos which displayed a lot more fruit. A touch more oak but very crisp.
