Introduction

A weekday dinner initiated by Kelvin. Wine theme: Odd bottles. Any bottles that are oddly shaped or odd wines.

Flight 1 - Bubblies (2 Notes)

Champagnes with the fried fish skins drenched in light soy ginger sauce.

  • 1998 Bollinger Champagne 87 Points

    France, Champagne

    (8/17/2010)

Fresh , clean and very delicious! Expressive with delicious yellow fruits, vanilla cream and just a nice touch of creaminess. Everything was nicely in place and a great starter to a meal.

  • NV Laurent-Perrier Champagne Cuvée Rosé Brut 74 Points

    France, Champagne

    (8/17/2010)

I just got lots of woodyness on this. Aged oak, kinda washed out already on the palate. Lots of dried out strawberry skins and very dry. Suspect storage wasnt that ideal for this bottle. A little tired.

Flight 2 - A spread of whites (3 Notes)

Fino with the clams, hermitage with the steamed fish and riesling with crab beehoon. All excellent pairings!

  • NV Equipo Navazos La Bota de Fino 15 "Macharnudo Alto" 86 Points

    Spain, Andalucía, Jerez-Xérès-Sherry

    (8/17/2010)

Extremely mineral with shells, oysters, seabreeze and fresh rose wood furniture shop . Clean dry wine with lots of salty salinity, soy sauce, dry umami blended with de-alcoholised brandy , almond skins and some kumquats to the end. A leader in its catergory. A geek's wine. Not easily understood or enjoyed by the masses but a profound wine in its right.

  • 2004 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage Blanc 89 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

    (8/17/2010)

At first, a very intriguing nose of umami, toastiness, chempedek pungence and reminiscent of a fatty rich meursault or puligny.Second evolution brought out more of its white florals (osthmanthus and acacia ) characteristics. By the end of the dinner, this was really like back to burgundy again. Yet the palate is superlatively expressive of its terroir with its richness, oily fattyness in a good cod liver oil way.Rich yellow fruits, dry almond skins and cold stone minerality reminds me of a fino. Top of its class. Well made. Excellent example for its region.

  • 2003 Künstler Hochheimer Hölle Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel 88 Points

    Germany, Rheingau

    (8/17/2010)

Excellent bottle. Well made riesling that has mosel richness probably due to the ripe vintage but also more lively and steely than a mosel. Fresh acidity holds this beauty of a wine together. Good sweetness of pineapples, ripe apricots and some lychee longans with a streak of lemon juice zipping through. Good weight, good lenght , great balance. Quaffable yet serious.

Flight 3 - Reds (2 Notes)

The pinot with tea smoked duck and IGT with guiness pork ribs. Another excellent pairing.

  • 2001 Beaux Frères Pinot Noir Belles Soeurs 84 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

    (8/17/2010)

Funky undergrowth leaves, blood and kinda rusty minerality but above all that, there are actually heavy fruity top notes of strawberries, juicy round plums and black fruits but all that had all but faded away mostly though. There is structure, kinda unorthodox but this is Parker's rendition of burgundy. We had guesses for spanish grenache blend, aged aussie syrah, and a rhone. Very interesting interpretations. I would love to see this rated by Parker himself. As odd as a bottle gets: heavy bottling for a pinot made by THE wine person of the century but not the most welcomed wine god in burgundy though.

  • 2002 Feudi di San Gregorio Pàtrimo Campania IGT 89 Points

    Italy, Campania, Campania IGT

    (8/18/2010)

Woo... this grows on you. Excellently made wine. Lots of brooding dark exotic cassis fruits, silky to say the least, very classy and the texture on this wine is beautiful! Very balanced and brought together . A bit left bank bordeaux like with brooding quality of a top 2nd growth. Nice structure, elegant yet restrainedly powerful . A gentle giant in the making. Would love to see this develop . Lots of tobacco , cigar to finish. Lots of machisimmo here well balanced with a bit of sexy charm. Lovely.

Flight 4 - Intermission (1 Note)

A pour from KG's table.

  • 2006 Sylvie Esmonin (Michel et Fille) Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques 87 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

    (8/17/2010)

Explosively lively red fruits on the nose . Inviting and substantial. Lots of good fruit sweetness here with robust kinda extracted ripe red strawberries, red cherries and bliueberries. Resembling a top class NZ pinot in the dept of attractive fruit. This marginally retains its burgundian roots with the earthy dust that comes nearing the end. Well made and very good drinking now...suprisingly.
