Introduction

okay, this was over two nights, but the main theme remains the same. Ben came down from the UP and have a weekend filled with wine, beer, and all sorts of food along with of course UFC action.

Flight 1 - day 1 (4 Notes)

  • 2008 Domaine Weinbach Riesling Cuvée Théo 91 Points

    France, Alsace

    (8/27/2010)

nose: loaded with minerals, crushed rocks, limes, lemon peels, bits of green apples and some bits of white florals. Good depth, and a bit tight at first but opens up nicely

taste: round and fat medium feel with medium/high acidity with tones of green apples, minerals, crushed rocks, white fruits and white florals

overall: young, but not inaccessible. Plump with great tones on both the nose and palate. Good length as well with the ability to age, this should be better in another 5 years, but is very tasty now

  • NV Michel Turgy Champagne Grand Cru Réserve Selection Brut Blanc de Blancs 91 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

    (8/27/2010)

nose: focused and pristine nose of fresh picked green apples, all sorts of crushed stones and minerals along with tones of white fruits. A very linear nose with very good depth and focus

taste: delicious with a real smooth and classy medium feel and medium+ acidity with focused tones of warm bread, green apples, loads of mineral tones with bits of white fruits

overall: this is listed as L.2006. Well balanced with real crisp and precise tones on both the nose and palate. Very good depth on both the nose and palate as well, though it is lacking a slight bit on the mid palate. That said, this is a quality bubbly at the price and is very enjoyable

  • 1992 Corison Cabernet Sauvignon 92 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

    (8/27/2010)

nose: well balanced and classic nose of dill, mint, dark red cherries, cassis, vanilla, herb tones, and some bits of american oak

taste: full bodied with tones of dark red cherries, cassis, vanilla, bits of herbs, dill, anise, red currants. Very well balanced with good tannins still showing themselves, but good layering as well

overall: All California Cabernet should strive to be like this. Beautifully balanced with nice and warm fruit that really screams from the get go.

  • 1987 Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon 95 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

    (8/27/2010)

nose: lovely and balanced nose of cedar, dark red cherries, red currants, dark red fruits, bits of ground coffee, spice tones and a touch of herbal tones with tones of sweet cassis. Very fresh on the nose with great depth and class that really takes ahold

taste: Full bodied with gripping tannins that are showing a great amount of youth that belies its age as silky tones of dark red cherries, red currants, cassis, cedar, and bits of tobacco flow well together. Supremely balanced on the palate with great depth and class

overall: An amazing wine. This is still a young wine as it has a very vibrant and dark ruby coloring. Waves and waves of layers emit from the glass and fill up the air with their beauty. This is a cabernet that takes hold and captivates you.

Flight 2 - day 2 (3 Notes)

  • NV Michel Arnould & Fils Champagne Grand Cru Brut Réserve 91 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

    (8/28/2010)

nose: pretty and perfumed nose of bread, lemon peels, tart citrus tones, some bits of minerals, pears and white florals. Excellent depth and class on the nose

taste: suave and elegant medium feel with medium+ acidity and fresh tones of lemon peels, minerals, pears and fresh picked tones of citrus'. The acidity is nice and refreshing while not overpowering

overall: Easily one of the most consistent bubblies for me. Well balanced and the tones have some real class to them. This was ready to go right away and held up over dinner

  • 2005 Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Crau 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    (8/28/2010)

nose: deep and robust nose of black cherries,s garrigue, lavender, black fruits, licorice and all sorts of provencal spices. While it it seems like its holding back a bit, the nose is real deep and just filled with classic CdP tones

taste: chewy and rich tannins that are on the coarse side along with deep tones of black cherries, licorice, loads of provencal spices as well as mesquite tones backed up by medium acidity and medium body. The tannins are on the rough side and hold this back a bit on the palate, but the class is there with good depth

overall: this received a good 3 hour decant before drinking. It was drunk over another3 hours and the tannins were still very chewy. This will need a good bit of time to fully show itself, but there is a ton of promise behind it and can very much turn into a real stunner

  • 2003 Château Haut-Monplaisir Cahors Pur Plaisir

    France, Southwest France, Cahors

    (8/28/2010)

nose: extremely big, bold, and rich with tones of black cherries, cedar, black currants, oak, spices tones and dark red fruits. Good depth, but this definitely in the extracted and overblown category with the oak being extremely aggressive

taste: full bodied with chewy and hard tannins along with rich and bold tones of black cherries, cedar, oak, and spice tones. The tannins are very hard and unforgiving along with a good bit of aggression on the tones as well

overall: hard to know what to think of this. There is the richness of 03 showing in this along with the tones being a bit overblown. This had received a 2 1/2 hr decant and was a bit monolithic as well. Not sure what age would do to it, but the tannins rounding out a bit would be nice

Closing

a weekend that was way too short, but long on fun. We made a quick trip into chicago for dinner at sweets & savories, but the drinking from the first night slowed us down a bit on saturday night (well, slightly). Onto the next time
