Introduction

Yesterday we received conformation for adoption of a seven year old girl from China with slight special needs. In Cassie or Tempe's (we're not sure of her name yet) honor, we decided to pull some nice wines, for we are certainly blessed! Four bottles were more than Julie or I could finish. But, I can assure you that the Dom and the Laland are bone dry this morning.

Flight 1 (4 Notes)

  • 2008 Joseph Drouhin Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Petits Monts 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Pop and pour. This beauty starts a little travel weary, but with a very pretty light and limpid red color. By the nose I thought I opened the Clos St. Denis. It started with a beautiful tarry, cherry, Morey nose. First sip and impression has that just opened young Burgundy, stem and clove, slight reduction feel. 45 minutes later the wine starts to blossom with pretty smell of cherry sugar. More time adds a little anise and spice. In the mouth this tart, fresh, and firm young wine just keeps expanding and finally haunts on the backside. The nose just gets better with airy bitter cherry, cherry sugar, hint of neutral wood, and some slight spice. A natural, fresh, and wonderful wine. Needs a good few years, but...impressive. 93++

  • 1982 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 99 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Pop and splash decant into Juliska water pitcher.

-Bordeaux *nearing* apogee! So incredible! The color is of crystalline rubies. The maturing nose has soil, dry fall leaves that were just wetted, lavender (sweet though, not volatile), soft dark cherries, claret nuanced and layered. So few wines ever have this taste. What can I say, it's a Bordeaux of epic proportions. Dark cherries and dark currants, fullish. Not too structured or powerful, but long as days. For its age, it is quite lively and fresh. I love Bordeaux when it gets to this point, but it is also hard to describe. Dark and red fruits that are not young, but nowhere near decaying. Earth and aged or decaying leaf and tobacco, but not decayed, just aged. Its funny, I think to myself that 1982 was a "modern" vintage, but man do I wish more wines were made like this one. 99

  • 2002 Dom Pérignon Champagne Andy Warhol Label 94 Points

    France, Champagne

Pop and pour. First sip... WOW! Young but mesmerizing- so smooth and fresh, with a pretty, natural sweetness. Youthful, but without any of the bitterness of the '98, '99, '00. 45 minutes into it, the wine is absolutely mouth-watering and fresh. Full. Alive!

  • 2009 A.J. Adam Piesporter Goldtröpfchen Riesling Trocken 94 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Pop and pour. Wow! Clear yellow, with a light green hue. The tight but popping nose is intermittently temperate and tropical fruits, musky grapefruit, and naringin sugar. The mouth is full and spewing freshness and liveliness. Again with the grapefruit, and complicated, in a good way, with white calcium minerality. This wine is big but nimble. As always seems the case with Adam, this wine has a lot going on but the weightless fullness and juiciness seem to be all I think about. More time would not hurt this baby.
