Introduction

Just a get together to taste Meursault at various levels of classification to see how they compare at this age.

Flight 1 (4 Notes)

  • 2004 Guy Bocard Chardonnay Bourgogne

    France, Burgundy, Bourgogne

If I remember correctly, this either has some Meursault village wine blended in and/or comes from just outside the Meursault borders. Unsurprisingly, this was past its prime and showed caramel and apple aromas still with a little minerality. But it was very tired in the mouth as the acid was insufficient to keep it lively.

  • 2004 Olivier Leflaive Meursault

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

A blend of different village Meursault vineyards. Classic Meursault aromas of lemon and hazelnut with some minerality and toasted oak. Medium-bodied and round on the palate with good acidity. Not complex, but nicely balanced. Decent length and precisely what you expect out of a village Meursault. Mature and ready and will probably still hold for at least a couple of more years.

  • 2004 Pierre Morey Meursault Les Tessons

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

Moving on in this tasting progression to a "duxieme" cru. Tight and closed at first, but after about an hour it opened to show pretty aromas of lemon, white flower, mineral and a little bit of nutiness and toasted oak. Medium-plus bodied with good acidity, this got better as it sat out with more and more time as it got rounder and started to show some spicy complexity. I will probably wait at least another 3 years before opening another bottle.

  • 2004 Domaine Comtesse de Cherisey Meursault-Blagny 1er Cru La Genelotte

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault-Blagny 1er Cru

Final wine in this tasting was to go to a 1er cru. This was also closed when first opened and needed time to come around. It eventually showed white flower and lemon aromas with good minerality. Really good acidity and nicely balanced with good length, this will need some more time.
