Any Port in a storm

Introduction

So the much delayed and much moved port tasting event finally happened. Thanks to Chris for the venue.
The basic premise was a combined horizontal and vertical of 1970 and 1977, which worked well... unfortunately, the wine I preferred was the most expensive!
Decanted a couple of hours prior to drinking.

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 1970 Dow Porto Vintage 90 Points

    Portugal, Douro, Porto

Cork was fine, lovely pale colour. Good level of sweetness, fair degree of complexity, nice nutty tones. Pleasant but not a blockbuster.

  • 1977 Dow Porto Vintage 92 Points

    Portugal, Douro, Porto

Preferred this to the 1970. Sweet and nutty, smooth and delicious. Very well integrated and drinking nicely.

  • 1970 Graham Porto Vintage 89 Points

    Portugal, Douro, Porto

Good colour, nice concentration. Smooth and well integrated now. Again an edge of herbs on the palate - sage, almost. Nice fruit notes to it, too, but the herbs don't work for me. Drinking well now.

  • 1977 Graham Porto Vintage 88 Points

    Portugal, Douro, Porto

Good and well made, but has a distinct herbaceous edge - I think this is the house style, the 1970 exhibited it, too. Not as intense as the 1970, either. Not really my thing

  • 1970 Taylor (Fladgate) Porto Vintage 95 Points

    Portugal, Douro, Porto

Absolutely fabulous, best of the night. Great dried fruit flavors and raisins. Not overtly alcoholic, beautifully integrated tannins. Cork was a bit of a mess but no apparent ill-effects on the wine, and the wax capsule had gone. Drinking deliciously now. Great.

  • 1977 Taylor (Fladgate) Porto Vintage 94 Points

Second behind the 1970 Taylors at the tasting. Great length, beautiful flavours of dried fruit and raisin, just a step behind the complexity of the 1970 for me. Great stuff
