Introduction

Fantasic set-up by Danette here; a grand table decorated among the pallets of wine. All in fine form; there were even some climbers among the racking, in clear breach of OH&S rules. Ah, well.
I forget who catered, but it was a grand buffet indeed.

Flight 1 (14 Notes)

  • 2005 Lark Hill Riesling

Australia, New South Wales, Southern New South Wales, Canberra District

{screwcap} Somewhat developed, a little Germanic in its musky, softly-steel tinged aromas and flavours, but fuller-bodied than a typical Rheinland offering. Still doesn’t feel like a very long ager- the acid has settled right in and has softened out.

  • 2008 Petaluma Riesling Hanlin Hill

Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley

{screwcap} Typically soft on the palate, the flavours of musk and sherbet are quite sweet. Very soft acid – this is very much a drink now proposition.

  • 2006 Cloudy Bay Gewürztraminer

    New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough

{screwcap} A citric-and-lychee nose. Musk and spice on the palate blend with pot-pourri fruits. It’s quite acidic, which adds to its power, and gives it persistence. Despite an initial impression of palate sweetness, this finishes quite dry. Despite its heft, it’s not especially complex, although at a young age and as a fairly early drinker that’s hardly a crime. I wouldn’t keep, however.

  • 2001 Henschke Riesling Springton

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Eden Valley

{screwcap} Well, a screwcap certainly hasn’t stopped this evolving. Lots of developed toast and lemon-butter on the nose. A strongly citric and acidic palate, with pungent bathpowder flavours and a powerful dry finish. Odd that the fruit seems to be developing so mach faster than the structure. Lacks much charm, but is an interesting wine with some of life left at least. Something of a one-off release I believe, from a single vineyard in Eden.

  • 2005 Henschke Shiraz Vineyard Selection Tappa Pass

    Australia, South Australia, Barossa

{vinolok} So, Henschke is making Zinfandel? This has that typically exotic liquorice and liqueur blackberries on the nose; confected aromas dominate. The palate is immensely sweet and spicy, with soft tannins, and a warm finish Certainly a crowd pleaser – at the price (A$60-ish) I’d want a bit of aging potential, which I’m not sure this has..

  • 1998 Mitchelton Shiraz Print

    Australia, Victoria, Central Victoria

{cork, 13.5%} Super wine. Lovely lightly aged aromas of earch and wood-spice, coffee, chocolate, but all very natural-smelling. Full-bodied on the palate, warm and cuddly, with soft velvet tannins and a generally lavish, but not unstructured, mouthfeel. Medium-length finish. Very good.

  • 1998 Edwards & Chaffey Shiraz Section 353 Flawed

Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale

    Corked. Again.

  • 1998 Wynns Coonawarra Estate Shiraz

Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra

This is softening right out now. Developed spicy notes, but with a suggesting of trembling volatility at the end of the medium-length finish. Good value wine at the end of its life.

  • 1998 St Hugo Cabernet Sauvignon Coonawarra

Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra

Rich, full-bodied and rather oaky cabernet. Really comes across as something of a bruiser and remains somewhat clunky on the palate. Still needs time to settle down, but all the ingredients are there.

  • 1998 Barossa Valley Estate Shiraz Ebenezer

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

Mature, warm, slightly spirity, easy-drinking and fairly simple shiraz. Attractive enough, but at the very end of its plateau. Drink up.

  • 2006 St Hallett Shiraz Blackwell

    Australia, South Australia, Barossa

{cork} Raw, roasted shiraz fruits. Toasty oak. Warm finish, full-bodied weight. Really needs time to settle, although this is so harsh and raw-tasting you wonder if it’ll ever come together or just get more aggressive and unbalanced as time passes. Should be just rustic, but it’s a bit beyond that and into the realm of brutal.

  • 1998 Baileys of Glenrowan Shiraz 1920's Block Flawed

    Australia, Victoria, North East

    Lightly corked. Next.

  • 2000 Gunderloch Nackenheim Rothenberg Riesling Spätlese

    Germany, Rheinhessen

{cork} Some development apparent, but still plenty of filigree apple flavours weaving in and out of the remaining acid. Very good indeed, especially given the reputation of the vintage.

  • 1983 Seppeltsfield Para Liqueur

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

Classic and reliable Seppelt tawny; warm if oxidative notes of tea, caramel and butterscotch. Rich, acidic, eternal.
