Blind Wine Tasting with Riedel Vinum Extreme Glass Test

Tasted Saturday, May 21, 2011 by cab blends with 511 views

Introduction

All reds decanted for 3 hours before tasting. Riedel glass test was performed using 4 different varietal glasses to determine the impact of the glass shape and size on each wine.

Tasting notes are limited as I did not keep them after the tasting.

Flight 3 (1 Note)

  • 2004 Byron Pinot Noir Santa Maria Valley 87 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Maria Valley

This softened amazingly with the decanting. Initially straight out of the bottle, it had a harsh metallic finish that is what I dislike extremely in a Pinot. After a few hours of decanting the finish was remarkably smoother and silky. A very light violet nose. Still not a Pinot I would buy again.

Flight 6 (1 Note)

  • 2004 Vilafonté Series M 90 Points

    South Africa, Coastal Region, Paarl

In a more classic French Bordeaux style than classis South African. This is no fruit bomb and the Cabernet Franc is clearly apparent. Cassis is very light and the only hint of new world. No classis chalky SA terroir.

Closing

Once again the use of the different glasses was stunning and demonstrated the impact of the lip in directing the wine into your mouth. As an initial non-believer, the glass really does make a difference. All tasters agreed.
