Introduction

A small gathering at Maison MacKay for some fantastic wines with dinner prepared by our personal Chef Lisa.

Flight 1 - The Whites (4 Notes)

  • 1996 Salon Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut 96 Points

    France, Champagne

First time I've had Salon and it's easily one of the top Champagne I've tasted. Still tastes young and fresh with nice acidty, tropical fruits, and amazing balance with just a touch of yeastiness to add some complexity. A pure expression of Champagne that's a pleasure to drink.

  • 2008 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Monts Mains 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

Deceptively clear color with just a speck of straw yellow. On color alone there's no way I would guess Chardonnay. Notes of lemon zest and citrus on the nose with deceiving depth of fruit on the palate that wasn't really expected which made this a nice surprise. Excellent finish and continue to improve and become more and more interesting with time in the glass.

  • 2006 Nicolas Potel Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chaumées La Truffière 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

Nose shows tropical fruit with some vanilla and toast elements. Initially a little flabby on the palate and seems to be lacking acidity that would help balance out the weight of the fruit. Did improve with time in the glass.

Update: There was about a glass and a half left in the bottle which was consumed about 24 hours later. This was when this wine really improved, gained weight and lost the flab. Much improved in that time. Original score 88. New score 90.

  • 2001 Domaine Leflaive Bâtard-Montrachet 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru

Initially had a bit of a flinty, gunpowder note on the nose which does dissipate quickly. What emerges is a fantastically balanced wine with tropical citrus fruit framed by lemon rinds and touches of vanilla. The balance and length on the palate is incredible and this just kept improving throughout the evening. Apparently this is a weaker vintage for this producer. I'd love to see what they can do with a good vintage because this was awesome.

Flight 2 - The Reds (4 Notes)

  • 1980 Domaine Robert Arnoux / Arnoux-Lachaux Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Very surprised at how well this wine showed. Bottle was in near perfect condition with a near perfect fill. Very little, if any, signs of age in the color and the nose was still vibrant with rich berries and baking spices. Smooth and well integrated on the palate. Maintained it's stuffing throughout the night. Probably as good as it will get at this point. Drink up!

  • 2002 Domaine Dujac Bonnes Mares 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

An absolute win. Opened and allowed to breathe for about an hour or two and was still pretty tight, showing only a bit of earthy dark fruits on the nose. After a couple more hours this started to really come around and turned out to be absolutely amazing with ripe strawberry scents and flavors mixed with earth and spice notes. They've squeezed every bit of goodness out of the grapes on this one. A truly amazing Bonnes Mares. 24 hours after opening, it was still going strong.

  • 2007 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Echezeaux 97 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Bottle #00999. Does "wow" qualify as a valid tasting note? Probably not but that certainly is the easiest way to describe this wine. Simply the most amazing nose I've ever experienced on any wine. It's nearly impossible to describe the floral, spicy nuances in a way that can paint the picture accurately in your mind. I wonder if there are a little group of gnomes that sneak out into the DRC cellars in the middle of the night while these wines are resting in barrel and mix in vials of magic dust when nobody is looking. How else can you make a wine so awesome and unique?? The texture is pure velvet from start to finish with just the right amount of everything in all of the right places. A true treat of a wine. Even the glass left over for 24 hours was still just as perfect, if not better.

  • 2000 Nicolas Potel Romanée St. Vivant 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru

We opened this up at around 9pm but barely made a dent in it so the bulk was consumed after about 20 hours and that bit of slow oxygenation had very little, if any, affect on the wine. Very expressive nose with a bit of gaminess mixed with some clove, anise and moist soil. Not the mind blowing nose of the young DRC that was also opened that night but very nice in it's own way. Soft and subtle on the palate and very easy to quaff this one if you wanted to but take some time to the finish, which lasts for quite some time. On one hand I'd like to see a little more oomph at midpalate but on the flipside, I appreciate the subtleties.
