Enjoyable. Nice nose showed drops of kerosene, some chalky earth, apples and spice. The palate was still nicely fresh, but the sugar had down, leaving a gentle wash of lemons and green apples along with a minerally finish with pinpricks of spice. This started out a bit simple, maybe even a bit weak, but grew in the glass very nicely to show a nice mouthful of white fruit flavours with a flinty, mineral backbone. I thought this was poorer than the 1999 at first, but this was not far behind at final reckoning.

The table was split between this and the 1997 that we drank together - both were nice. This was a bit deeper than the 1997 on the nose, with some honeyed notes, vanilla, green apples and grapefruit, maybe a little waft of spice. Very nicely balanced on the palate, slightly oiled texture, it showed flavours of lemony, green apples, grapefruit and a nice ring of sweet vanilla moving into a satisfying finish with a nice depth of flinty mineral. Given the vintage, this had a bit more sweet depth than the 1997, but lacked a bit of the chiselled minerally feel of the other wine. Nevertheless, pretty nice and drinking beautifully.
