Flight 1 (10 Notes)

  • 1998 Château Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Tasted blind. Medium yellow in colour. Nice nose of floral, nuts and charred lemons. In the mouth its medium bodied with decent acidity and a tart finish. Beautifully developed flavours with well integrated mature oak. Finishes very dry. Drinking great right now. Excellent.

  • 2004 Foxtrot Pinot Noir 90 Points

Canada, British Columbia, Okanagan Valley, Naramata Bench

Tasted blind. Medium red with some bricking to the rim. This nose at first seemed to be a blend of Pinot Noir and Grenache but after some time in the glass it became more obviously Pinot with notes of red pinot fruit and hints of spice. Lighter in the mouth with good acidity, soft tannins and a fairly lengthy finish. Doesn't show many signs of being a BC Pinot, which is a good thing. Excellent.

  • 2009 Marcel Lapierre Morgon Cuvée Marcel Lapierre 88 Points

    France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Morgon

Tasted blind. Medium to dark purple in colour (purplish/pink at the rim). Grapey nose at first which was slightly off-putting but that seems to blow off leaving bright, youthful and sweet dark fruits. Creamy mouthfeel with intense darker red fruits and good acidity. Way too young now to be drinking but it does show its potential. Very good. 88+

  • 1997 Château de Saint Cosme Gigondas 90 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas

Tasted blind. Medium red moving to orange at the rim. Rhone funk nose with a little sulphur which blew off making room for notes of mature red fruits and spice. Flavours similar to the palate with leather coming through on the medium length finish. This has decent acidity with mostly resolved tannins. After some time in the glass aromas of leather and tobacco started to show. This is a nice, typical mature Gigondas. I don’t see any point in holding this much longer as it’s drinking perfectly now. Excellent.

  • 2001 Domaine Santa Duc Gigondas 89 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas

Tasted blind. Deep red, very slight browning near the rim. Darker red fruit nose with hints of leather. Intense flavours on the palate with a silky mouthfeel and firm tannins. This seems like it’s just starting to enter its drinking window. Shows quite a bit of Syrah character. Very good.

  • 1999 Jean-Luc Colombo Cornas Les Mejeans 88 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas

Tasted blind. Big dusty nose (smelt like an old library book) that’s quite forward with riper dark berry fruits. In the mouth it had good acidity, drying tannins and a length finish. This doesn’t show very much Cornas typicity, but a nice wine nonetheless. Drink or hold. Very good.

  • 1986 Château Smith Haut Lafitte 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Tasted blind. Mature nose of red fruits, leather, dried tobacco and hints of cedar. In the mouth it’s fully resolved and beautifully mature with delicate and feminine flavours. Lighter in profile but has a complexity. Not a typical ’86 but very nice. Excellent.

  • NV Taylor (Fladgate) Porto 40 Year Old Tawny 92 Points

    Portugal, Douro, Porto

No formal notes. Brown colour, lots of sediment in the glass. Brown sugar and nutty notes with sweeter flavours and finishes long with loads of acidity. Excellent.
