Great opportunity to listen to Freddy Mugnier discuss his wine and taste across several recent vintages with him. Moderated and introduced by Allen Meadows.
Mugnier tasting. Barrel sample. Very elegant wine already at this stage. Black cherry on the nose, slightly lighter fruit on the palate. Good spice on the long finish. Best of the three vintages of Marechale so far.

Mugnier tasting. Floral and spicy on the nose but far more dense fruit on the palate. Fairly structured and tannic, the fruit seemed to come and go over the hour in the glass. Fruit was big and pwerful on the finish. I'd give this a decade.

Mugnier tasting. Mostly red fruit on the nose with some interesting floral charm. Blend of red and black cherry on palate, good length, good spice. Nicely balanced, not particularly powerful Just a trace of the 2004 green at the end. I liked this wine for the '04 vintage from the first time I tasted in 2006, and it keeps getting better. I will revisit my stash starting around 2010.

Mugnier tasting. Floral aromatics with lots of red fruit. Flavors of red cherry carry over from nose to palate with strawberry as well. Fruit, acid and tannins are already nicely balanced. Trace of green bitterness at the end. Probably needs a few more years but won't have the same longevity as most vintages of this wine.

Mugnier tasting. Very interesting and actually surprising. It starts out very ripe like many 2003s, emphasizing power and density over elegance. But there was really some great acidity and nuance that developed with more time in glass. What was unusual was that instead of having fruit hidden behind tannic structure like many young wines, here an interesting and elegant structure is hidden behind the massive fruit. At least that is how it seemed to me today.

Mugnier tasting. Incredibly elegant wine with perfect balance already. Wine seems subtle in every way but each component works perfectly with all others - fruit, spice, minerality, tannins, acidity, etc. Every taste over the course of the hour showed slightly different and exciting flavors. Really a great wine that should be held to 2015 or even much longer.

Lunch after Mugnier tasting. Primary fruit mostly gone, so this wine relied on good mouth texture and sous bois. More interesting than exciting for a 1993, this wine needs food due to the short fruit and prominent acidity.

Lunch after Mugnier tasting. Nose was quite a bit musty at first, never really showed much fruit. Good combination of primary red fruit and emerging secondary development on the palate. Moderate length. At a good place now.

Lunch after Mugnier tasting. My favorite of the three vintages of Fuees served. Ripe red cherry on both the nose and palate. Nicely floral - perhaps even showing a bit of lavender. Little bit of pepper and clove but even more dried thyme. At a really good place right now.

Lunch after Mugnier tasting. Absolutely sensational wine in every dimension. Wild strawberry and raspberry on the nose with lots of Asian style spice. On the palate the fruit picks up great density and power while also having an ethereal weightlessness. Perfect balance. Very long spicy finish.

Mugnier tasting. Rich, ripe fruit with lots of density. Good red cherry and wild strawberry. Long and powerful finish, although a bit overextracted. Really good for the vintage. At a very nice place now.

2001 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Chambolle-Musigny
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny
Mugnier tasting. Very bright and aromatic red fruit. Lean style, characteristic of both Mugnier and the vintage. Good silky tannins and acidity help provide nice lift on the finish. Quite elegant.
