Introduction

A bunch of the Chicago Wine Mafia decided to put together a vertical of Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese wines to taste during a party at the Otis house. Every great German vintage of the 2000's was represented together with a 1999 and a 1987. Grossie also thru in a 2005 Auslese for fun. It was very interesting to be able to try all of these wines side by side. Here are my notes:

Flight 1 - Spatlese (7 Notes)

  • 1987 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese 92 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

I bought this at auction for $25 about 5 years ago for $25. 1987 was not a good vintage in Germany but a great producer can rise above the conditions and this was an example of that. Medium yellow color. Moderate+ sweetness and a little low on the acidity but this wine made up for that with fine depth. Some petrol on the nose. Delicious pear notes. 92 points.

  • 1999 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese 90 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Opened by Otis. 3rd time I have had this with consistent notes. Floral nose. Clear color which was a little surprising for a 12 year old German. Still had a little spritz and was very lively. Rather tropical in its fruit profile. 90 points

  • 2001 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese 94 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Lost Verse brought this. This was the consensus winner among the 7 Prum WS Spatlese's in the vertical we tried. 3rd time I have had this wine and it has always been in the 94-95 range. Wines from the 2001 German vintage rarely disappoint. Slight spritz. Clear straw color. Wonderful core of white fruit with some mango notes. Very deep with a long finish. 94 points.

  • 2003 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese 89 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Opened my first bottle of this at Otis' house as part of a vertical. Didn't think this was showing as well as the 1987, 1999, 2001, 2005, 2007 or 2009. It was the sweetest of the group in my opinion but suffered from the low acid that was prevalent in the 2003 vintage. Apple notes. 89 points.

  • 2005 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese 92 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Grossie brought this as part of the vertical. 1st time I have had the 2005. Prum really nailed the 2005 vintage so I expected a lot from this wine and was a little disappointed that it "only" got a 92 from me. I suspect that it is in a bit of a dumb phase at present. 92 points

  • 2007 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese 93 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Another wine brought by Grossie to the vertical tasting. 1st time I tried this wine and really enjoyed it. Actually liked it better than the 2005 at present which surprised me. Young, fresh and vibrant. There is something very pleasing about young German Riesling. 93 points.

  • 2009 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese 92 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Opened by Otis at his home as part of a vertical. Clear color. The acidity in this young wine shakes your teeth. Very young and energetic. Needs time but mighty tasty now if you like high acid. The most tropical of the 7 wines in the vertical. 91-92+ points
