Flight 1 (1 Note)

  • 2008 Alain Graillot Crozes-Hermitage Blanc

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage

Somewhat rich nose, honey and apricot. Fat and oily texture but stays fresh. Savory note with some lime. Feels like there's a touch of oak (not new). Nice hint of almond on the finish. The fruit on the palate is borderline exotic with mango.
    Very good wine.

Flight 2 (3 Notes)

  • 2009 Domaine Yves Cuilleron St. Joseph Les Pierres Seches

France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Joseph

Mortadella, boloney notes with black pepper. Shows dark fruits with some new oak. On the palate this is very Syrah like, blackberry. The very creamy, lactic texture annoys me though, especially on the finish. With more air, it shows more red fruits like raspberry and strawberry. Low acidity. A little modern, flattering expression. On day 4, the wine was less creamy and seems more balanced and I liked it much more than on Day 1.
Would be interesting to see where it is in 5-6 years.
Vines on the hillsides of Chavanay, sandy, granitic, shallow soils
Partially destemmed, 18 months in barriques.

France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Joseph

Unfortunately the bottle showed some TCA (much more on the palate than the nose). Too bad because thiswas promising and if you were doing abstraction of the TCA you could tell some nice bacon and savory notes with some fruit. The palate unfortunately was totally muted, TCA infected and unfocused.

  • 2009 Domaine Barou St. Joseph

France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Joseph

Dark core, riper wine of the flight and the most tannic as well. Light savory note on the nose with some oak. The palate is a little forward, powerful with a touch of heat. It does get a little better with air but the dark fruit is a little too sweet and this seems extracted. The oak is still quite present at the moment. Borderline to lose its sense of place.
    Disappointing.

Flight 3 (2 Notes)

  • 2009 Domaine Faury St. Joseph (Hedonism)

France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Joseph

Interestingly enough the nose profile was similar to the Cuilleron but without the oak. A touch of savory note both on the nose and palate that disappear to offer plenty of pure syrah fruit. Round, low acid (even if it has more acid than the other '09s tasted here). There's a certain warmth in the fruit profile (no heat, just an impression of warmth, positive). Good balance. A little plummy as well.
The last glass was also showing some surprising peach/apricot notes (just like the Cuilleron did on day 4).
Not overly complex but a very nice St Joseph, honest and very drinkable which I actually think is more balanced than its '06 brother.

  • 2008 Domaine des Miquettes St. Joseph

France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Joseph

Ripe dark fruits on the nose with cigar box and savory note. Hint of VA. PLenty of balckberry with a touch of stem. Shows some tannins and a tiny spritz. Taste natural. More acidity than the other flights.
