Flight 1 - White (1 Note)

  • 2007 Bernard Faurie Hermitage Blanc

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Tropical aromatic notes. Deep and viscous but dry and very well balanced. Completely primary but this has all of the elements to turn into a special white Rhone. Since I am often left wanting more zip and liveliness in these wines, this is not a statement I make lightly.

Flight 2 - Reds (3 Notes)

  • 2003 Bernard Faurie Hermitage

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Very deep and thick looking. Oversized, multidimensional nose with ripe blackberry confiture, florality and alluring smokiness. Large scaled and ripe, but at the same time, serious, long and definitely not candied, roasted or sweet. Surprisingly strong acidity. This is absolutely delicious now, but I suspect that it will go on for a very long time given its material and superb balance for this freakish vintage. I own no 2003 northern Rhone wines and was frankly astonished at the quality here given my preconceptions about the vintage.

Now we are back to more normal depth of color; medium red with tawny rim. It shares some smoky notes with the '03, but the fruit is in the background rather than on center stage, and there are more herbal Syrah components. Lighter weight, high acidity, lean but adequately ripe black fruit, and slightly grainy tannins. Mature. All in all, good, although the texture leaves something to be desired.

Light ruby. Distinctly weedy nose with some forest floor complexity. Light bodied, in fact, slight with fruit that has largely faded away and overall lack of grip and concentration. Not dead yet but certainly getting close.
